Wenger goes for hot Rod

By MARK IRWIN

ARSENAL are poised to smash their transfer record with a £15million swoop for Argentinian striker Rodrigo Palacio.

Reports in Argentina claim Palacio, 25, will fly to London tomorrow for a medical after Boca Juniors accepted the Gunners offer.

He is destined to wear the No 14 shirt vacated by Thierry Henry’s recent £16m move to Barcelona.

Palacio wears No 14 for Boca and Argentina and is seen as a direct replacement for Henry.

Ironically, Barcelona had agreed a £14.9m deal for Palacio just days before learning long-term target Henry was available.

An earlier bid of £12.7m had been knocked back by Boca president Mauricio Macri, who said: “It would have to be a much bigger offer because, for me, he is the best striker in Argentina.”

The deal was further complicated by the fact former clubs Huracan and Banfield are both due a cut of the transfer fee.

But now it appears all obstacles have been removed after Arsenal came in with a record-breaking offer.

Palacio is currently in Venezuela as part of the Argentina squad which played Brazil in last night’s final of the Copa America.

He is eager to prove himself in Europe after going to the World Cup in Germany last year as back-up to Hernan Crespo and Carlos Tevez.

Palacio has scored 39 goals in 79 appearances for Boca and has won five Argentine caps.

He partnered Tevez in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Paraguay on July 5.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has already spent £16.5m this summer on striker Eduardo Da Silva and full-back Bacary Sagna.

Palacio’s arrival would smash the club-record £12.5m paid for Sylvain Wiltord in 2000.

Like the look of him on the youtube compilation. Don't suppose they'd like to throw in the No 23 for a couple of extra quid would they. Jesus Datolo, great run to make one of the goals.

I wonder about this, although that price is a bit ridiculous. Barca had a deal agreed for Palacios earlier this summer (for less), but they were haggling over when it was going to go through
(presumably waiting for Henry), and it all went quiet, so i'm assuming that has fallen through. In any case, Boca will want to keep him now for the Club World Cup in Tokyo.

This guy is hugely talented. I have watched him a few times for Boca in the argentine league. But the price is very high and if this is true it will be a massive gamble. Argentina players haven't
really done well in EPL

If these rumors are true, then i think it would be a dumb signing. SM is right, Barcelona doesn't need him no more, because of Henry, Eto'o, Gudjohnsen, etc. But, i don't think that the partnership
of Eduardo da Silva and Palacio (if he signs and is played with da Silva) is going to be good. A Croatian/Brazil and an Argentine playing together? Has anyone even seen that before? There are other
options. Walcott and Palacio, RVP and Palacio, Adebayor and Palacio. Hell, if he does sign, he might not even be a starter, with RVP and Adebayor starting. Personally, i think if Rodrigo Palacio
leaves Boca Juniors for Arsenal, that'd be a very stupid move. I mean, he could go from starter to benchwarmer. Plus, he's loved down in Buenos Aires and at La Bombonera, so i strongly believe he
won't leave Boca.

Both Riquelme and Palacio will probably stay for the CWC in December, and then move in the January transfer window.

Rodrigo Palacios is good - but 23 million? I say - let them wast....i mean INVEST it in him. why not? They let Thierry Henry go because, supposedly, ran out of gas and now they want younger &
talented players.

He's good player but that is definitely too much. I wouldn't pay more than 12 million euros. The guy's talented but he would be a gamble.

If he got rid of that ridiculous thing hanging from his head I would pay an extra million.

I think he's a good player. But there are players as good as him that would cost Arsenal a lot less...

In big prem teams, South American strikers have had difficulty. In Arsene, we trust...but.... And regarding Atleti, they always build a great time every year, but fail to perform. I hope this year
will be different.

If Arsenal sign Palacio is good signing, but we need force in our attack in the person of Obagol. Wenger should extend his contrat first before further signing.

for me i think that there's on one who can replace henry but if they say that palacio is also good like henry then they should sign him immediately because arsenal is lacking a striker and they
should also try the activities of eto'o so that we can compete for the premier ship next season . to be like Manchester ,Chelsea and liver pool.
