I don't think any opening game of the season has been as important for Arsenal for many, many years.
On 15th August, Arsenal travel to Goodison Park to face Everton. Arsenal are desperate to get off to a good
start; prove they are contenders. However, make no mistake, it's a really tough game, followed by a trip to Portsmouth, then back-to-back away games against Manchester United and Manchester
City.
If Arsenal drop points at Everton and lose to Manchester United in their 3rd game of the season, Manchester
City suddenly becomes massive!
Although I don't like to ponder that scenario too much, it's not unthinkable with this Arsenal team. And come September 12, Arsenal will have a new problem - new Manchester City signing
Emmanuel Adebayor.
Arsenal fans malign Adebayor, and with good reason, but trust me - he won't be lazy that day, and probably
won't be Adebarndoor either. By god he can can hurt Arsenal on 12th September.
He's a talented player, stung by the criticism of Arsenal supporters - rightly or wrongly - with a massive point to prove.
Adebayor is dangerous when motivated - albeit not very often - but you can bet that he will be super-super-motivated that day. Man City boss Mark Hughes will have him wound
up like a spring; not that Adebayor will need it.
Arsenal's fans will need to be on good form; they'll certainly need to mess with Adebayor's head. Just like Cardiff fans messed with Aaron Ramsey's head in the FA Cup last season and reduced
him to rubble. Portsmouth messed with Walcott's head on 3rd May too - he was useless that day - so it can be done.
If that doesn't work, how can Arsenal disrupt Adebayor on the pitch?
Can the Gunners sort their offside trap out by then? If so, it would help.
Might Vermaelen play and negate Adebayor's aerial threat? If so it would help.
Or will Gallas and Toure flap about like harpooned seagulls whilst Adebayor runs riot, nodding in set-piece
goals for fun?
What a fascinating game that is likely to be.
Of course, I'm pre-empting Adebayor's departure. But it seems almost certain now. - as I write Sky Sports
are reporting that the move is done and dusted but for a work permit. I am also pre-empting that Arsenal will not go to the City of Manchester Stadium and simply roll them over - but it was a
tough place to visit last season for everyone and will surely be more so next season with Tevez, Adebayor, Santa Cruz, Barry and incredibly perhaps John Terry in their predictably new-look
team.
Regardless, Wenger desperately needs the Adebayor money to fund other areas of the team. A proposed £25m is simply too good to turn down for a club in Arsenal's financial position, and
fortunately Arsenal have a ready made replacement for Adebayor, he's called Eduardo.
Eduardo isn't lazy, Eduardo doesn't need motivating, Eduardo won't run offside 8 times in every game. He is
truly world class.
I once thought Adebayor + Eduardo would be a match made in heaven. But football doesn't work like that,
unfortunately Adebayor has a screw loose somewhere and lives in a fantasy world of his own making. He is not grounded like Eduardo, or Michael Owen, or Wayne Rooney.
Arsenal are losing a good player in Adebayor though and presuming Manchester City do snap him up, I doubt he
will be the same non-performer under Mark Hughes.
Mark Hughes and Arsene Wenger are very different characters. If Adebayor isn't putting it about for Arsenal,
Wenger will make up an excuse for him. If Adebayor isn't putting it about for Manchester City, he'll get the look of a murderer and a rocket up his arse.
When a club is as rich as Manchester City, players lose power. The club is so wealthy and the players on
such high wages, they want to stay forever and will play for the cash above everything. Where else is Adebayor going to get anywhere between £120-170,000 a week?
So Adebayor could be a very good purchase for Manchester City, especially under a no-nonsense manager such
as Mark Hughes. Adebayor will score far more headed goals under Hughes tutorship, and he'll be pumped up like the Incredible Hulk on 12th September - desperate to ram every boo back down those
Arsenal supporters' throats.
What a fun game that will be - such fun! And what a great, great game to win if you're a
Gooner!
