Toure's malaria not thought to be serious

Wednesday, 23 July 08, 07:49 AM · Comments(24)

News reports today inform us that Arsenal centre back Kolo Toure has contracted malaria whilst on holiday in Ivory Coast. The fact that Toure was briefly hospitalised tells you that whilst his condition is by no means life threatening, it's serious enough a disease for him to require several weeks full rest and recuperation. This will no doubt lead to Toure being some way behind his team mates when it comes to pre-season fitness, and it's therefore conceivable that the player could miss the start of the season.

Obviously, my thoughts are with Toure for a speedy recovery, however, one can't help but wonder if this situation will force Wenger into a transfer market rethink. I've made no secret that Arsenal's number one priority this season is to buy a centre back. I am not sold on Toure and Gallas as a partnership and even less sold on Senderos and Djourou as back-up.

No doubt the latter of the four centre backs will now move up the pecking order for inclusion at the Emirates Cup and Amsterdam Tournaments held between 2nd-9th August, giving Wenger an opportunity to see how they cope agains the likes of Juventus, Real Madrid, Ajax and Sevilla.

In that respect, Toure's absence, although not welcome, could well be a blessing in disguise, giving Wenger the opportunity to clarify once and for all as to whether Arsenal's defence will be able to cope with the numerous bumps and bruises of another long, hard-fought season.

this post is disrespectful, Malaria is very serious, and to have a headline about it coming to our rescue so we can buy a defender is pathetic. you are a joke.
I hope u get Malaria and die.

Describing Toure's potentially debilitating disease as coming to 'Arsenal's fans' rescue' or being a 'blessing in disguise' is tasteless, insensitive and ill-thought out.

I for one wish Toure a speedy and full recovery. If he is to make this then he will be back in the near future. If his illness is more protracted then we will be missing one of the best defenders in the league and my thoughts would be with him.

I for one would not be rubbing my hands together with glee at the prospect of signing a new centre back like some caughtoffisde/Le Grove reading mug.

Though the post title is disrespectful, the overall point of the article is valid.

malaria is serious but with adequate medication he will recover soon. i dont entirely blame the writer for the article. arsene wenger has to buy a centre back imagine what would happen if either toure or gallas where to have a serious injury. common sense states that neither djourou or senderos are sufficient if you have hopes of winning a league. the thin struggled last time due to lack of sufficientplayers now there are even less player with flamini, gilberto and hleb gone. plus rosicky and eduardo are out for a while. that is 5 players from last years starting 11. arsene wenger is acting as if arsenal is not desperate to win. if they dont win again one can only imagine the catastrophe the club will be in

why are we complaining? though Toure is ill, it will not take his life, this is just one of those things, it will soon be over, but i want Senderos to take his chance right now, he is good enough, he is the perfect combination in our defence, when Toure went to ANC, we all thought we will loose everything, but it was rather when Toure came back that we lost almost everything,

Oh dear. I understand you all want to shout "Arsenal til I die" until you go blue in the face but think about what he is saying. Badly phrased possibly but he is right in saying that we might get a centre half as a result, which we probably do need.

C'mon guys note the 2nd paragraph "Obviously, my thoughts are with Toure for a speedy recovery"
It's a shame but people will jump to conclusions without reading the story and most sites will post the same headline so go and attack them.......

A healthy adult male such as Toure will shake this off like a bout of flu. This article is very valid.

Unpredictable you are too modest. You really should call yourself Dr Unpredictable MD. Cheers for the medical prognosis. Appreciated. Send my thoughts to Kolo when you next see him.

My point was just that we should not look at one of our players contracting a tropical disease as an opportunity or a blessing.

But then I suppose any old championship manager mug can write a blog these days.

We have five quiality CBs (if neither Song nor Djourou are the new DM). A new CB is not necessary. A new DM is.

The initial reaction was over the top. When I heard the news about Toure my thoughts were the same as the writer of this article. First and foremost, that Toure is ok, will recover quickly and get back to football, but also that Wenger might be forced to get in another defender, which we all know we need. Think of a better headline next time though, for the sensitive souls out there (it was tastless).

Wow - this is really excellent. I have an idea. Petr and Invincible you could start a clinic? We havent yet replaced Gary Lewin's position so maybe you could take over first team affairs? You'll have to work this out with Dr Crane of course but you probably know him from 'the medical circles' so that would be cool I imagine

im sorry but it is a very disrespectful headline, dont forget thingsd like MRSA which can be caught through illnesses like Malaria, and I am sorry to say that people do die from it.
Yes we need a centre back, but if Toure will be back soon we wont need get one will we!! so the only way we would get one is if Toure doesnt make a 100% recovery within the next few weeks - which is why this article is insensitve.
Dont get me wrong I do think Arsenal need a centre back and I really do want Micah Richards to join but we arent going to buy one unless Toure's malaria gets worse

Thanks DS that was my point exactly. We will only 'replace' Kolo if he is ill enough to be missing a signifcant part of the season in which case I for one wont be happy and seeing it as an opportunity.

It is not the phrasing of this article which misses the mark, it is the whole article concept

I have modified the headline for fear of causing offence to those sensitive souls.

Malaria can be dangerous if you don't have access to medical facilities - as in Africa, but now he's back in England Toure will be fine.

Arsenal Truth - your assumption that in order to find decent treatment for malaria you need to leave africa is bollocks.

This article is not as disrespectful as some of you are claiming..I'm an African and i can categorically tell you that Africans have natural defences in their system which helps them combat malaria when the illness strikes...MALARIA does not kill able bodied African adults...same way as flu doesn't kill able bodied European adults..once you take the right medication and rest then you're good to go..So people!!! Toure is not dying and he should not be out for weeks as claimed ..he definitely should be ready for the start of the season as it normally takes about a week to recover fully from malaria...SO stop cursing the man who wrote this article ..it's Malaria ..not the bubonic plague....and yep..I agree ..we need adequate defensive cover..Senderos and Djorou ain't up to the job....Toure has been our best defender for about four seasons..ok Toure had a shaky end to the season last season but Senderos is just another Pascal Cygan..He just does not inspire confidence and gets easily bullied for such a big man...!!!

I understand what the writer of this article is saying. He has a valid point but must be cautious of the title next time. And guys, i am from Nigeria, malaria is no big deal and doesn not kill unless it is extreme fever, Flu is worse.

Whilst I appreciate that it's a serious illness and Toure is my favorite player...as someone that invests £1000s in the club every year, I'm a little disappointed to say the least. When you earn the money the boys do and your only responsibility is to ensure your fitness, it beggars belief that he could catch maleria in this day and age. I'm English and have been to both Africa and Asia and I've never caught maleria. There are preventative measures that should be taken before travelling to ensure this doesn't happen. If it does turn out that he has to miss the start of the season, I for one will be seriously annoyed with both the player and his advisors.

yeah well no harm done, but obviously we dont wish illness on anybody (unless its the Spurs boys getting diorrhea again).
I personally dont feel a defender is a top priority but thats not to say we dont need one, but whoever we buy will only be back up for Toure and Gallas so why would we spend millions on someone who might only get 10 to 15 games a season, I would rather see Djorou, Hoyte, Song and Nordvelt as well as Senderos see this an opportunity to stake their claim. I know Djorou and Song are naturally midfielders but Toure made that transition well and also I think Eboue is much more solid defensively that he is attacking, so we do have cover.
I have to say that whilst he is overpriced I feel Garath Barry fits into the Arsenal "passing football" perfectly, and can add a bit more experience to our team.
Its bad news about Eduardo's recovery taking a setback, I feel even if Adebayor stays we should look at another striker, somebody like Dean Ashton would be perfect because with the crossing ability of Walcott, Rosicky and Nasri on the wings we need a good old fox in the box powerhouse striker, an Alan Smith type to get on the end of things.
I really am optimistic this season, as long as Arsenal play the way they love playing then I dont see why we cant win something, hopefully the youngsters like Wilshere, Lansbury, Randall etc.. can progress through as well.
