Ok, I know it's only June and I've published time and again that there's plenty of time for new recruitments by le boss. However, I just can't help but be alarmed by recent quotes from Arsene Wenger. They appeared last week, but I ignored them as the usual fanciful paper talk, but since more-detailed quotes cropped up again yesterday I feel the uncontrollable urge to pass comment.
So what am I fretting about? Well, these quotes printed in The Sun newspaper - that bastion of intelligesia - where Wenger admits: "I have been interested in Vincent Kompany ever since he was 16, but I am not interested in him this year... There is nobody I need for my team's defensive department."
Yes, it's the second, bolded part of that sentence that most alarms me, draining my head of red plasma. Since the second half of last season, it's become as obvious as day that Arsenal's big problem lies in the heart of the defence. In fact, I am pretty confident that had Wenger bolstered the defence in January, however problematic that may have been, Arsenal could well have been walking away with at least one major trophy last season.
There is no doubting that Kolo Toure and William Gallas are generally both fine players, everybody is assured of that, but it appears that they ceased to be fine players for about 3 months of the season - the most crucical part, the part where strength of character, composure and nerve is undoubtedly tested the most. It's all well and good displaying neat and tidy defensive characteristics in the first half of the season - and I'm not belittling how important that is, but it's really not so good if all the hard work is going to be thrown out the window come February, when the title race takes full shape and the Champions League knockout rounds begin.
Between 12th August and 11th February (over 6 months), Arsenal conceded 30 goals in all competitions - that includes a 5-0 hammering from arch rivals Tottenham in the Carling Cup semi-final, but when the pressure was really on towards the end of the season, Arsenal conceded 20 goals in less than eight weeks, winning just 2 matches in 13 and getting slowly but surely (or in fact quickly) taken out of every major competition partaken in. Liverpool put 6 past Arsenal in 6 days, Chelsea breached the defence twice in 15 crucial minutes, and Man Utd banged another 6 past the back line in during the 4-0 FA cup rout and league game combined.
Chief protagonists in Arsenal's downfall were Philippe Senderos and Kolo Toure - the former proving for the 5th season running that he is incapable of keeping his composure in pressurised situations, and the latter having a fair nightmare second half to the season.
One would think that Kolo Toure would be a shoe-in for club captain - enthusisatic, loyal and very popular amongst the fans, yet that Wenger has never considered the Ivorian for the role full time tells you enough about what the manager thinks about placing added responsibility on the player's shoulders. Only Gallas seems suitable captaincy material, yet even he has let the club down at times with some questionably bizarre antics, whilst the player tend to have an annoying habit of talking more to the players during pre-match warm ups than when we really need it, on the pitch during the game.
Much as though I admire the player, Toure has major aerial weaknesses that have been cruelly exposed since the departure of Sol Campbell . Unfortunately, Gallas does not seem capable enough in the air to compensate for Toure's continual 'miscalculations' in this department, and it seems fanciful that - short of emplying Tony Adams as defensive coach - further improvement can be coached into the Toure/Gallas partnership at the ages of 27 and 30 respectively.
As far as back-up for these positions is concerned, my opinion of Philippe Senderos is pretty much set in stone - too slow, lacks concentration, and in pressurised situations is prone to completely losing his bearings. Johanne Djourou did not particularly impress whilst on loan at relegated Birmingham, whilst Alex Song performed reasonably well towards the tail end of the season as Wenger toyed with playing Toure at right back instead of the untrustworthy Eboue, but again, you would have to emphasise that Song has not yet shown he can perform in a pressure cooker environment.
To be honest I think he is using it as a smoke screen.
Wenger stated end of the season that he needed to strengthen the squad in a few places and included a Big defender a midfielder and possibly a striker. Stating that he felt perhaps 3 players needed. I personally think we need maybe 5 but hey..
The last couple of season when the boss has let slipped who he might be interested in other teams simply have outbid us..
I.E. Essien / Babel / Wright philips to name 3.
I guess I have some pretty deep rooted fears about the defence, I just can't help speculating about that area of the team. If we bought a commanding centre half, I wouldn't mind who was dropped - Gallas or Toure.
However, I think Gallas would leave if he was dropped and we need cover, so I'd want Gallas to keep his place as club captain and would like to see Toure cover for centre-back and right back positions. That's the sort of strength in depth we need.
That is the more ruthless option, but it probably would be best to drop Toure. However, that could backfire if it's true that Gallas is not appreciated by the team. And if we did ship Gallas out that would give Wenger a chance to try again to find the right person for captain.
none of you have a clue. you are all playing fantasy football. drop Kolo, buy this and that guy because I seen him do a few tricks once. A manager sees his players daily, scouts watch players daily - not the match but follow the players over the pitch throughout.
You guys post articles that are absolute fantasy.
As someone else said - who else has been active in the market, exactly, no one.
Wenger worries me, yer right. He has achieve a hell of alot on the system he has had to manage with due to whatever reasons. He is building teams not making them. He is developing youth and at an affordable price, he is competing with all teams on a fraction of their spendage.
Think before you write
Stevo, Not sure what is fantasy about potentially acquiring a player. Our defense has had its breakdowns and even Arsene has acknowledged this. Having seen the players in practice etc doesn't change the fact that those breakdowns occured, so remember not to throw stones when you're in a glass house.
Good article, I think you're spot on. Great as he is, loyal as he is, i can't help feleing it will be a mistake not to make a suitable addition. I worked on all the arsenal games during last season and it wasnt just the big teams that we struggled, it was the mistakes we got away with against the rest and there were far too many.
Senderos definitley needs a run of games to get into rythm but you can't afford that these days.
Woodgate would have been a good option.
Fingers crossed its a smoke screen!
very well written piece and i completely agree.
The 2 comments above are clearly from people who are known to most season ticket holders as AKB's (Arsene Knows Brigade)... these people support Arsene Wenger not Arsenal and will probably become Manc supporters when he leaves.
You are spot on... our biggest issue is our defence and at the end of the season Wenger pointed this out but now is saying we don't need anyone???
We have no cover for CB (Senderos is a liability), our current CB pairing are clearly not effective and Willie G is having a bad time at the Euros with his performances, we have no cover for Clichy or Sagna... our defence is a mess.
At the beginning of last season we needed a winger and defensive cover... we still need those things but now Flamini has left it has left our already thin squad even thinner and we've got about as much depth as a drop curb.
Broggers you need to take your Arsene tinted glasses off pal.. Ramsey is yet another 17 year old reserve player... Nasri isn't a done deal and both are attacking CM players... something we don't need... we need wingers and defenders and a DM. The blogger has pointed these issues out as he clearly cares for our CLUB and what we achieve and has concerns which many of us have... especially as Wenger has never done much in the transfer window and this year he needs to but every week he is telling us we don't need additions, first he said we don't need Strikers and now he says we don't need defenders... so who is he going to get? where are these 2-3 quality players that were meant to arrive 3 weeks ago?
Being blindly optimistic that 'Arsene Knows' doesn't make you a better supporter.. just means you are one that cares more for the manager than the club and don't have an opinion of your own.
Let me ask... what has Wenger achieved in the last 3 years if he knows so much? No doubt he is a great manager and done great things for us but we are becoming weaker by the season.
I normally have 100% faith in Le boss's judgement butI think we all know that sendeross is blatantly not good enough to play for arsenal!Every season Ihope and pray he comes good, but its not going to happen.Wenger seems to be the only person on the planet who thinks he's a good player!I believe we need a big, tall defensive rock,of the adams- sol campbell mould who can deal with the arial bombardment from teams like chelski and the scousers !
He is not gonna sign anyone but he will regret it big time.Time and time again Kolo and Willy came up short i bet you all one of them is gonna be injured for some time and then look at the back up....it is frightening.Ponderous Senderos,Liabilty Djourou and The awful Song....We are nothing short of a train wreck waiting to happen.
nightmook.. yet another pointless comment from yet another Arsene Wenger supporter.
Sorry but i support our club and like our manager but some of these blind optimists who think he knows everything and is beyong judgement really grate on me
although it's easy to say commanding centre half. It's not so easy to find one. There simply aren't many around at all. Albiol is certainly not. He was part of a shocking Valencia defence last season and isn't physical. Zapata i can't say i've seen very much of in common with most others.. Toure is an excellent centre half and we'd be foolish to risk losing him on the chance of an unproven defender solving our occasional defensive problems.
The guy is so hellbent on succeeeding on a shoestring budget that it clouds his judgement. Was he the only one who didnt watch calamity Senderos at Anfield the excruciatingly poo defending from Kolo and Gallas for about 4 months. But i tell you ,if we win anything it will be nothing short of a fucking miracle.
here here Danish Gooner... with so many Wenger nut suckers on the net it's nice to actually see some comments from Arsenal supporters who have an opinion of their own.
I agree that it the defense is worrying, I don't have the utmost confidence in it, and I believe the problem is actually Gallas and Toure - they don't work together. Toure and Senderos together led us all the way to the final of the Champions League as the best defense in Europe (remember Lehmann not conceding for hundreds of minutes?). Therefore I feel I would like to see another quality center back with Toure, as I like him better. I heard today not for the first time of Raul Albiol. That would be a great signing considering Valencia is offloading players, he could come pretty cheaply for a guy like him, young and already proven. I think that Senderos does need to move on, but I feel that Djourou is a better center back than him so he should be the fourth center back. I think I would then like to see Arsenal finish the Nasri deal and get just one more piece. I would like them to get one more winger type of player like David Silva of Valencia. I think that signing is necessary if Hleb leaves but we may be able to do without if not. And then of course a back up goalie because I feel that we need 3 goalies at all times and the youngster need to stay with the reserves full time.
If the only thing you are looking for is to come first and raise a coup, go to the beach and play on sunday morning with your pals. But if what you wish is a beauty and entertainment footbal, go to Emirates.Footbal should be like a movie.I don't mind watching a movie even if it`s not awarded . Beauty does counts, no silverware..Mouriño is bad but popular movie.A.W is a nice movie to see , that bring you pleasure. I don`t mind winning medals I'm interested in enjoying my life with good performances. That should be priceless
Fuck me! Even on here we have to put up wuth those sad think-they-know-it-all-pricks (Otherwise known to mere mortal Gooners as TTKIAPs) If I see one more idiot come out with that overly simplistic sun headline reading bullshit AKB, Im gonna puke!
Where exactly are these twats? All I see are some wanting toi have faith in the team and the managers judgement.
I've never used that phrase :Arsene knows" in my life, but I do know something, he knows a shit load more than some internet blog geeks.
Getting your knickers in a twist over every tabloid headline, aw diddums.
Can you not at least save the anguish, frustration, anger and tantrums till the fucking season has at least started? Or do you just enjoy being in a constant state of hissy fit?
Yeah i agree with most of u, Arsene is great and winning things is not important as long as we try to develop kids.
you said it - you've falllen into the media trap. so,you admit it's all nonsense and yet you still write this shite? i give up. start worrying if you need to towards the end of august if nothing's happened to your liking. ffs!!!!!!
It's a discussion and certainly not an attack on the manager, so not sure why it's being treated as such.
Wenger made a comment at the end of the season that a centre back would be a priority signing, and now he's made a statement stating the reverse.
These are direct quotes and therefore worthy of dialogue. That's all it is, dialogue - a lot of fans I talk to agree that the centre back position, above all others, is their chief concern, therefore I am more inclined to follow any leads or heresay in respect of that area of the team.
By the way, in the main, abusive comments will be deleted, so best not go down that avenue.
Well, the Euros are over now for France - and thus Samir Nasri. Don't expect a long wait there.
Well said goonerjay
Fed up with people who go so mad if the boss gets a little critcism about our transfer policy.
Im also sick of these ppl who have there heads shoved up wengers arse so far that even if he said black was white they would agree..
It dont take a rocket scientist to show that we need a commanding cb more then anything else.. If he spent all his transfer funds on one i would not be dissapointed as we have players commin through the ranks thats as good as ramsey & could be as good as nasri if playing foe a smaller club.

Well that muppet sums it up for me... Lets keep selling our best players buy kids and win nothing...
How much longer do you think Van Persie and Fabregas will stay if this is our policy

Some of you people make me laugh. It is June and mid Euros and have you seen a lot of transfers…no. Most top sides are waiting to see what happens, in fact Arsenal have been the most active in the market, although only signing Ramsey (Good deal) and Nasri (yet to be confirmed). You just need to get on with your life and not be too concerned with transfer rumours. Arsene will sign what we need when and where appropriate, if he doesn’t then we have enough good players anyway.
Fine piece. I couldn't agree more. If Wenger only buys one more player, it has to be a tall, commanding center-half. I hope his comments are a smoke-screen and that,in actuality, we are after Zapata or Albiol. Ramsey and Nasri are exciting, but not what we need to win something next year.
