Denilson at the Copa America?

Wednesday, 18 April 07, 05:35 PM · Comments(23)

Young Arsenal midfielder Denilson has proved to be quite a sensation this season. The 19 year old arrived as an unknown (both in Brazil and Europe) when he was signed from Sao Paulo last summer, but he has shown fantastic attitude, committment and skill.

He's very tenacious and highly confident (Thierry henry said he was like Cesc - when he came in for training he showed no nerves, and played like he owned the place). He's had no problems settling in, and has turned in some sterling performances having forced his way into the team since December. Although his inexperience has shown, he will get better and better.

He's been called up for Brazil already this season (without having played), and I wouldn't be surprised to see him goto the Copa America this summer and show the world what he's capable of. Some of the top players like Gilberto and Emerson have had very difficult seasons, so Denilson playing would give them a break. Dunga also has a fondness for unheralded players, so i'm fully expecting this to happen. Since Denilson hasn't played a whole lot this year, he would be in good shape for the Copa America and it would give him great experience for the coming season at Ashburton Grove.

Hi SM, this is not the first time that an unknown Brazilian player becomes famous in Europe without being known even in Brazil. Just to mention one, I's say AS Roma player Mancini...it's quite normal, there are so many good footballers over there...

Hi Gabriele, you right about the brazilians who appears without famous in their country. But this is not the case of Mancini. He played here and was a medium player, as goalkeeper Doni also - Taddei was horrible in Palmeiras and I don't know how he playy in Italy, sorrry. I would mention other players: Oliveira (former Belgian player), Sonny Anderson (former Lyon) and Giovani Elber (Bayern).

Sm, I agree with you. I think Denilson should be in brazilian squad during the Copa America. He promisses a lot and hope may be well, since we don't have gifted players in his position...

Elano and Julio Baptista were well known in Brazil as well. Elano won Brazilian Championship in 2002 alongside Robinho and Diego. And Julio Baptista was one of the most booed players São Paulo had in the last years...

of course gabriele, there are many others also - Elano, Julio Baptista, etc. but in the case of Denilson, I mean that he was a youth player at Sao Paulo, and when he arrived at Arsenal. he had only made 12 appearances for SP (most as a sub), and not too many for Arsenal either, but he has gone straight from a youngster to the brazil squad, amazing for just one season.

hi bittenca, yup, he really has a great workrate and is trying to learn positioning from gilberto. he can keep the game simple, or play killer balls. apart from emerson and gilberto there doesn't seem to be anyone (mineiro?). against chile, dudu cearense came on for gilberto and although i thought he would attack, it looked like he was playing in defensive midfield! they can use denilson.

I completely agree with you about Denilson. Mineiro is too old and I'm sure that he will not be called anymore. I respect Gilberto a lot, but he is not the kind of guy that I'd like to see playing for Brazil in the next years...Sevilla's Renato is a good choice to be with Denilson...

what about adriano? at sevilla he seems to be played in so many different positions, but he is a left-back right? silvinho has said many times that he thinks adriano should (and will) be the next left-back for the selecao.

Adriano is the kind of player that I didn't see playing here in Brazil...I'm sure Dunga will bet on Marcelo from Real Madrid right now or Maxwell (Internazionale), but Adriano is also an option.

Whilst on the topic of Brazilian Sevilla defenders, I think Daniel Alves has been immense for them but he left Brazil really early. Was he regarded/considered then to go on to bigger and better things ? He's been Liga's best right back this season and arguably one of the best in Europe. Thoughts ?

Unfortunately, Dani Alves went to Spain earlier than brazilians expected. We couldn't see him playing here - unless you consider his appearances for Brazil's Sub-20 national team. At that time, he was already an impressive player in attack. I think he has not found his best game in Brazil's team under Dunga's direction...I waiting Daniel to do that!

But Dani Alves was the best right wing for Dunga's team by far, so far. Maicon, Cicinho, Ilsinho didn't have good appearences I think.

Mauricio, I'm sure that Daniel Alves is much better than Ilsinho and Maicon, but I guess he is going to a play a lot to get over Cicinho in good conditions. In the future, there'll be a place for Eduardo Ratinho. And I'm not joking...

I can say that Rafinha and Adriano are great players... they used to play for Coritiba that is the team that I support here. Adriano played more time here, Rafinha went away for Schalke very early, right after he played (very well) for U-20 Brazilian team in the World Youth Championship in Netherlands (2005). I think both deserve to play in Seleçao...

Unless you are talking about some boy from sub-17, I don't know any Adriano from Flamengo`s First team. Are you sure? I heard Renato Augusto, midfielder from Flamengo, is a target for some european clubs.

Whoops, that's the one. I got confused because of Sevilla - Adriano/Renato. Renato Augusto is the one.

Renato Augusto may turn into a good palyer. He has potential. But really young, playing in a Flamengo's team that is also young, thinking about next season... He needs more time to play and get some experience.

Where can I get more information from this player?
Are there any YouTube videos available that anyone can point out to me? Thank you.
