Villa take on Bolton

Wednesday, 10 December 08, 11:20 AM · Comments (0)

Villa's main aim to gate crash the top four is still very much a reality, having picked up two draws and two wins in their last four games. Confidence will definitely be high at Villa Park come Saturday, as their emphatic victory over Everton truly showed that they have that bit of quality to really suggest they are capable of achieving such previous heights. Villa’s win against Everton saw 3 equally stunning goals, which truly made up for the lack of goals in previous games, and with Bolton’s previous results it suggest the game on Saturday could have plenty goals.

Villa’s home form this season has been fairly consistent, as from most of Villa’s home games the home side has taken points, as out of the 7 home games, Villa has drawn 4 of them, won 2 and only lost 1. Villa’s main goal source has come from their two main young English stars, with Agbonlahor having bagged 7, and Ashley Young taking his tally to 4. However, quite a few goals have come from all over the pitch, with Carew having 4, Sidwell on 3, and Barry on 2.

Previous result:

The corresponding fixture last season threw up a thriller for every Villa fan, as Aston Villa’s majestic attack football truly rocked Villa Park, and ultimately rocked Bolton’s defence, as Bolton conceded 4 goals with no reply. Goals from Barry (x2), Agbonlahor and Harewood, meant Villa took all 3 points.

Bolton’s previous results:

Bolton are currently sitting 10th on 20 points, add to this that Bolton’s form has been fairly good, as in their last 5 games, they have won 3. Bolton has scored a total of 8 goals, while conceding only 6 in their last 5 games. Bolton appears to be better on the road than at home, having only won 2 of their home games at the Reebok, compared to 4 away wins.

Bolton’s attack has been greatly boosted by the run of form of Elmander, who has scored 3 goals in 3 games, their other main contributors over their last few games has come in the form of 4 goals from Matthew Taylor with Taylor having scored in Bolton’s last 3 away games, he will be one to be watched. Even Gary Cahill has been jumping on the scoring band wagon, with 2 goals.

Injury news:

Unfortunately for Aston Villa, it looks like John Carew their joint 2nd top goal scorer is set to miss another game, with a troublesome back and hip injury; thankfully it looks like it will not need surgery, as he is currently under a course of treatment. Other than Carew, there is no other current Villa injury news.

*UPDATE* James Milner could potentially be out for the Bolton game as he is suffering from a virus bug, but Martin O'Neil is being optimistic he will be back for the big game. Plus John Carew isnt expected to be back till the end of January!

Bolton is currently without Ricardo Vaz Te with a knee injury, and despite injury talk surrounding Fabrice Muamba, Gary Megson has rubbished this talk saying that the England U21’s midfielder is fit. Moreover, it looks as though Matthew Taylor has fully recovered from a thigh strain sustained against Sunderland, as he managed to play in the 2-0 defeat at home to Chelsea.

Match prediction:

Going on current form, Villa look in good stead as they have scored more goals this season and conceded less, furthermore they’ve gradually managed to grind out points from their home games. However, Bolton have looked very good on the road and if last season’s result is anything to go on this game should be a goal fest! It is a game Villa really should win if they want to truly maintain their mission of breaking the top four monopoly on the premiership.

Prediction – Aston Villa win (3-1: lucky guess)

One to watch – Gabriel Agbonlahor (he was particularly quite last game and I could see Martin O’Neil telling him to go out there and prove a point!)

Team Line-ups:

Aston Villa – Friedal, L.Young, Davies, Laursen, Cuellar, A.Young, Barry, Sidwell, Petrov, Milner, Agbonlahor.

Bolton - Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Cahill, O'Brien, Samuel, Muamba, Davies, Nolan, McCann, Taylor, Elmander
