A few David O'Leary positives

Friday, 10 March 06, 08:11 AM · Comments (0)

We asked you yesterday to send in a few positives about our current manager, David O'Leary. We got quite a few emails, not all of which we can publish but some that we can.

The most popular and sent in by quite a few people was, believe it or not, Thomas Sorensen. According to some that emailed in David O'Leary purchasing Sorensen is a positive for him. Another thing that was mentioned by a few was 'he saved us from relegation' but we're not adding this as a positive as a trained chimp could have managed us directly after Graham Taylor and we still wouldn't have gone down - the squad was too good. Graham Taylor was a huge gamble but well worth a season - it didn't work out but most thought that would happen.

Some more positives, he's apparently blooded Davis successfully and managed to keep hold of Mellberg and must have had some influence on Angel's excellent season. All true but Davis would play well under the trained chip I mentioned earlier and Angel having one season out of three isn't a huge positive for me considering the money he is paid.

Mellberg wasn't a happy player and O'Leary has managed to keep him happy so we can only assume O'Leary has sold his soul to the devil or he's actually done something positive. We're not sure which one it is.

Some more positives, on a lighter note (because that really is all that was sent in) are;

He hasn't got us relegated, yet

Proof to kids that you don't have to have any ability to reach the top

One now realises that to be a member of the Diplomatic Corp does require education and training

Man management training is not a myth

You have to prove you are the best not just think it

Even old wisened businessmen can be conned out of millions

It is not only wives that can spend lots of money on goods that never see the light of day

Proves the old adage that you can fool some of the people some of the time but not all the people all of the time

There is more to being a coach than imagining that you have four wheels and 56 seats

That Villa do have some decent players as they would appear to be staying in the Premiership in spite of the manager

Leeds United were unlucky to be relegated, they just employed him before us

It is not just the top ex pros that don't make good managers, even crap ones don't.

He proves that centre backs have never made top class managers (I am open to argument on this!)

His tactics proves that Villa Park does look strange half empty

To be interesting to the BBC's MOTD you only need one script

All of the above comments were sent in to us and we're not entirely responsible but to summarise there are really not a lot of positives about David O'Leary but a huge amount of negatives.

We're not going to ask you for the negatives because we know them as well as most but surely the board have to agree that David O'Leary isn't meeting expectations and he's probably not meeting targets given to him by the board. We see no other alternative for Aston Villa, based on his track record of always finishing in a worse final league position through his entire managerial career, but to let him go.
