A great man once said

Monday, 03 September 07, 04:37 AM · Comments (21)

In his programme notes Ron Saunders used to write 'With your usual vocal backing and 110 per cent effort from each and every one of the players I am sure we will get the right result.'

The players yesterday were tremendous. Martin Laursen, if he can stay fit, will become a legend at Villa Park; Ashley Young was just electric; Nigel Reo-Coker just doesn't stop. I'm going to stop because everyone deserves a mention but you all know it.

Yes the football could be better and yes we should have filled the stadium and yes we should have a right back, but all of that is forgotten today.

However, the football will get better, the supporters will come back and we'll have a right back in January and in a season or two we'll have cover for all positions and players fighting for a place.

Liverpool talk of the Kop Choir and them acting as a 12th man. Yesterday Villa Park acted as a 12th man and that's how it should be week in week out.

Great game yesterday and great atmosphere yesterday. Let's do it again and again and again.

amazing effort from the villa lads against chelski- the one thing that is clear after the first few games is that villa have one of the best managers anywhere and even without the right balance of players in the club we are now capable of beating anybody - lets hope we get some consistancy -all the bloggers that have been losing faith in MON eat your words

OMG, MON has installed a backbone where the teams wishbone used to be. Right from the start there was a commitment and resolve that has been missing for the longest time at Villa Park, and by the end I was being hugged by total strangers - fantastic stuff.

Well said but when you think of the average age of the squad how good could they become. Reading between the lines i think we will get hoyte in january and defoe will be up for grabs im sure even though by then im not sure we will need him. would like to see our 4 young forwards start without carew just to see what they can do

at runtingz

have people really been losing faith in the manager? i know a few were a little tetchy (sp) during the transfer window but that i think can be directly linked to the 'top class' signings statement made by the club - but that is now history and we have to kick on, which i'm sure everyone will do ..

Proud to be a Villan, indeed. More heart than I've seen on display at Villa Park for a long time. Villa were excellent value for money. So much to look forward to as this core gels.

Although Villa slumped back after Knight's goal, they withstood Chelsea's pressure admirably, then countered and put the knife in. That will put some confidence in the squad. It sure put smiles on faces all around the rest of the league. Well, except for Roman and Jose.

You know you've seen a great match when Jose is moaning that his side deserved a point from a 2-0 loss.

We are moving forwards......and to those who keep piping on about Defoe.....stop it !!! Great team performance, and it will get better as the season moves on. When was the last time you saw such a strong bench at Villa Park ? and thats without Berger, Davis, Osbourne and Sillifou Zidane !!

Fantastic, haven't felt like this about Villa in a long time. I was bemoaning the lack of big signings over the summer but MON truly knows best, look at Tottenham so far, a solid team is much more important than 11 prima donnas.

OMG, MON has installed a backbone where the teams wishbone used to be- nice comment Monkey. I am over in Sydney and though drunk was fighting to stay awake, failed(mental note-must record just in case) Fantastic result, match highlights start in 30 means, am very excited to see(sober now). We win our game in hand and we can go joint top and we have got 2 of the big guns out the way. Minimum Uefa spot this year me thinks. Its looking great from here.I can almost feel the buzz! Why was yesterday not a sellout?

I think MON made a couple of big decisions which proved to be vital to us winning. First was bringing Zat Knight straight in and putting Melly at right back. Both looked assured in their positions against some seriously stern opposition in SWP and Drogba. Secondly, and more importantly, he brought Luke Moore in, who was excellent when on the ball, put Agbon on the right and got rid of the most wasteful and light weight player on our books, Petrov. I always feel that Petrov starts okay, and fades fast. He was brought on arounf 75-80 minutes and looked sharp, even if still wasteful when he got the ball. This was a smart gameplan from MON, and one which clearly worked yesterday against a team that came at us, and got punished by our pace. Bravo MON.

When people say to me " Jose Mourinho , he's a tactical genius" it could be a fair argument, but why on earth did he take SWP off, when he was clearly their best player? Why does he insist on Didier Drogba being back in his own 6 yard box to defend corners? Why has he never won at Villa Park ? The answer is I don't know! What I do know is that MON out thought and out manouvered and ultimately outclassed JM and i for one loved every second of it! LOL
Did you see what a bad loser Jm is? He sais that it was an unfair result and that Chelsea deserved more out of the game based on their posession! Well, my grumpy portuguese friend, posession ain't 9/10ths of the law in football. As my dad always said "Passes for show, scoring for dough" and I think this also showed how beatable Chelsea are without Frank Lampard! I hope this result has spurred those other teams slightly lower down the league that anyone can beat Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool or Man United on their day and make this one of the most exciting premiership seasons ever! Come on you VILLAINS!!!

A combination of commitement, fitness and desire got us the result.

Those are the basic requirements of a great team.

Together with pace, awareness, skill and belief (which we are starting to see) could suprise one or two critcs...i.e Matt Le Tiss!

However, lets keep our feet on the ground, but enjoy the next couple of weeks!

cant understand why ppl are questioning carew ? The job he does is immense he draws defenders attention to himself and frees up space for the fast attackers to exploit.Take carew out of the team and you will lose that space .Leave him alone, there isnt another forward that can offer what he does in the prem,Tery /Alex couldnt cope with his strength. :(
