All quiet on the Aston Villa speculation front

Wednesday, 16 January 08, 04:42 AM · Comments (36)

It's not often you go a few days without having anything to say about the club but it is January and we seem to be not that interested in the transfer window. This comes as no surprise but we should really be used to it now.

I have no doubt that there is work going on somewhere. Martin O'Neill knows he needs players but we'll get nothing from him until the deal is done and we know what we'll get from him and the new player, as in pretty much exactly what they'll say.

The forums that General Krulak visits are all running with threads that Martin Laursen has signed on the back of General Krulak saying "he's with us" and while I think it would be great news - I started taking things said from General Krulak with a little pinch of salt a few months ago. When it is on the official site, I'll believe it.

I'd love Laursen to sign and seeing as it's not my money I think we should pay him £80,000 a week, no make that £100,000 a week. Just sign him up - he has earned it, as Martin O'Neill would possibly say.

I don't actually care what he gets and if it actually works out to be more like £45,000 a week then I'm sure whatever the club actually pay is exactly what he is worth. Lets just hope he doesn't get injured three weeks and one goal after he signs.

In some news; the club are going to create a flag for supporters and you can vote for which one you want here. Next week they're going to write a few songs for the Holte End and hand out the lyrics before each home game and you'll get to vote on which song is covered - stay tuned.

It will look really nice I'm sure. Option four is a joke and anyone that votes for it will automatically be deleted from the database - vote for option three and they'll hopefully have to change it quite soon.

That's it for me, I'm going online shopping. If you hear any rumours or you've got anything else to say stick them below or in the forum. Like a light.

I've said about the decline in speculation this month compared to last month when there was loads it's slightly worrying. I've picked the badge with the claret and blue squares the rest were a bit dodgy.

Hello all,

I agree. We need some new Villa songs. I've recently written one and it goes to the tune of the Noahs Arc song (you know the one which starts off "the Animals came in 2 by 2...). Here it is...

"A saviour came from lands afar, Oneil, Oneil
He made his way to Villa Park, Oneil, Oneil,
With Martin Laursen, John Carew
He built a team in claret and blue
And we all laugh as blues go down again."

What do you reckon?

Any good?

Zak.

Fair play to the club - they are listening to the supporters and are doing things to help keep a real buzz about the place.

We could do with some more songs - they would benefit us more than a flag (although that's a good thing as well). I can imagine that the club will come up with some absolute dross though!

It amazes me that "The Bells Are Ringing" isn't sung anymore. It's one of the best songs in the league and used to ring around the Holte End up until a 3 or 4 years ago.

Damian - start a campaign to get it going again! A few people might need reminding of the words (or even teaching them for the first time), but there will be enough people who know them to help everyone along.

I am putting my faith in you to get it going again!

Oh, one other thing... Try to get everyone to sing slower, especially when singing Martin O'Neill's Claret n Blue Army. It sounds much, much better when it is sung at the same steady pace - does anyone remember singing Graham Taylor's Claret n Blue army for 35 minutes at Everton in 1990! Try doing that at 100mph like now!

Up the Villa!

On the transfer front, I can only assume that we are interested in some of the players we've been linked with over recent weeks, but the deals are being held up for various reasons (Defoe and Chimbonda could be waiting to hear what's going on at spurs, Valencia and/or Porto could be hanging on for as much money as they can extort for Miguel or Bosingwa. The same goes for Derby and Giles Barnes).

Like them or not, things will slot together towards the end of the window, when things have to come to a conclusion (that's how it happened last year).

Dorin Goian, Riise, Henrik Larsson will all be signed before the end of january. Larsson signing is planned before the liverpool game, riise once liverpool sign a LB and Dorin Goian when mellbergs situation becomes clear. probably at the end of the transfer window

Well the fact that there arnt any new transfer rumours isnt a good thing and the fact that we havent had any new first team players arrive is even more worrying. But if you look at it, there hasnt been much movement at many clubs. Ok Derby have shipped in a few players but lets face it they needed it. The top clubs havent done much. Ok we need to increase the squad size but I definatly think MON will do this.

As i've said a few times before, I doubt there will be any transfer activity in January simply because the players that we want are not available.

It won't be through lack of trying though, but I just cannot see anything significant happening!

I voted for option 2 - the one with the squares. The Ark song above seems pretty good. I remember singing "Big Fat Ron's Claret and Blue Army" the year we finished 2nd to Manure at 101mph!! Does anyone remember the last game that season at QPR, everyone turned up in fancy dress? There were loadsa St. Trinians "girls", a few Mr Blobbys. Who was the Bishop leading the singing?

If there's a nugget of truth in rumours, then let's hope that there's no truth in "no rumours". We've got to sign someone to strengthen squad!!

Dont think we'll hear anything about any deals until their done, all it does is tip off competiton and dissappoint fans when they dont come off. Think your a bit sinical about the flag, it's a good idea and everybody should vote for flag 3. I agree with flag 4 tho i would get my lighter out on the thing! UTV

I remember singing Big Fat Ron's Claret n Blue Army at Sheff Wednesday for his first game - that was nice and slow and sounded brilliant. It went on for ages, just like Graham Taylor's did at Everton (again when we came second!).

There's a theme there - sing it slow and we come second in the league! Sing it fast like the last few years and we struggle! There could be something in it...

I like that Ark song - it's not as good as the Bells Are Ringing though! We should get them both going though.

I picked the one with the squares as well. (No. 2)
No. 4 was awful. Almost embarassing.

You get the feeling that whoever was told to make it was given the brief of coming up with 4 flag designs, and he'd only made 3 by 4:50pm so he quickly found some lion from Lion King, shoved our trophy cabinet in front of it, and legged it home. Seriously, option 4 would make us a laughing stock. Option 1 is plain jane, option 2 is slightly less plain jane, and option 3 incorporates our crest and trophies, which i liked muchly. I do however think that when Arsenal, Utd and Liverpool play though, we should hide it, because it's not really going to intimidate them. Option 3 is definitely the one to go for though.

What in the name of god are you are you on Damien. We need a song like blues, leeds, coventry and ecpec Liverpool. As for the flag I go with No 3. Shows our history. Lets face it at the moment thats all we have.

What is number 4, the club cannot be serious?
I imagine the kids will be voting for that one.

The Noah's Ark song is quite good.

Early Liverpool prediction, who would have thought January would've been the most boring month for Villa news?

Iv got used to the fact that its allways quite at villa during transfer window i suppose you just have to get used to it and accept martin will the players when HE wants not when WE want

Im sure we will see a couple of new faces i wouldnt expect to see no more than 2 tho 3 would be a bonus.

Hi lads (and maybe lasses?)...hope you are all ok.

I said the other day that we are in a prime position at the moment and Randy and MON should really sieze the day !
A bit of trouble is bubblin at Liverpool and Man City looked decidedly average to me tonight and i just think now is the time to make the investment that would have maybe been considered this coming summer or maybe even the season after.
We have been very good so far this season but i'd hate to see all that hard work become irrelevant. Can you imagine the end of season we will have if Villa were to buy a couple of superstars to add to what we've got?
I remember the summer when everyone said "world class" players won't come to Villa Park. I can understand the euro pull etc but surely by now, people across the world have seen how good we can be on our day, the feelgood factor at the club and the inspirations that we all have.
I seriously believe if MON could get a really good right back, another winger and a classy creative midfielder in January, we could really push on for maybe even the Champions League spot ! (seems unreal...but it is very possible)
If we had to spend big, it wouldn't bother me as long as it wasn't extortionate but who those players are god only knows !

To Woodinho:
I like your design but i would just suggest changing the amount of trophies on the design to replicate what we have won. (maybe using one big Euro trophy positioned as a background to the main badge and then seven league Cups and three FA cups (if thats what it is) arranged around the bottom of the image somehow. Also, i think the text would look better all in white because you have the yelow on the lion and the cups coloured the light blue of villa.
Nice one for making the effort..good work Woodinho
UP THE VILLA ;) ;)

The trouble is every player we are linked with is either wanted by other clubs or is not being released by their own club. Chimbonda is like some of our other targets he wants to come to us and we seem to be willing to meet Spurs valuation. However they are refusing to discuss anything until they get a replacement which doesn't seem to be going to happen. 1 or 2 players is the most we will get i think but not because we are unwilling to bid its just that the good players are not being released.

Oh and number 3 is best i think although apart from 4 there all quite good.

AV33
AV33 Wrote: | 05.39GMT | Jan 17, 2008

Sorry..Villa have seven FA cups and five league cups,,,dunno what i was thinking.
Probably too many too many for the flag thing but still i think the text would be better all in white though and the trophies in light blue placed a little further away from the main badge.
UP THE VILLA ;)
