Another result: Aston Villa 3 Inter Milan, yes you read that right, Inter Milan 0

This is more news than a match report because I didn't get to the game and couldn't find it on any dodgy TV channel or the net so was forced, reluctantly, to try and listen via Villa World.

Just after Barry scored the third it dropped for good and to be honest I gave up trying to get it back.

By all accounts though it was a good Villa performance but one we shouldn't get too carried away with. Although I'm sure the 36,000 odd that were at Villa Park will be and who could really blame them?

It's easy to get excited by pre-season victories and after watching Inter Milan in a few so far this season I honestly thought that they'd turn us over, but they didn't and if I'm honest I'm a little excited by the result, although I do actually know better.

I'm not going to get carried away by it as it was just a friendly and they are still three weeks off their season start despite putting in some very good performances the past few weeks but it is a sweet victory nonetheless.

Barry got two and Martin Laursen, former AC Milan player, got the other. The real test however starts next Saturday when Liverpool come to Villa Park.

For a sort of action by action guide of how the match played out visit the official website where it will be live from 7.45pm tonight.

Obviously it means nothing in competitive terms, but as a confidence builder it's utterly invaluable and a nice indicator that Villa are, at least, a far better attacking side than we were this time last year.

Had we lost this, or indeed other pre-season matches, doom merchants would have been proclaiming the End of Days and how we're relegation candidates – so tempered optimism vs pre season pessimism works both ways. As it stands, it's a) nice to see Villa play so confidently as we approach the big kick off (despite obvious squad size problems), and b) nice to have football back full stop. Happy days.

The thought of transfer dont excite me now, seeing Moore, Gabby and Young next season is what im especially looking forward to. There is not a striker in the world within reason that id like villa to buy if it meant pushing Agbonlahor out of the team.

I think you might be getting a bit carried away Ayeresey, they are good but I can think of plenty of strikers I'd like, rooney, tevez, henry etc, plus we need transfers whatever, even if they aren't great just to make up the numbers. Great result but I'm with Damian pre season friendlies don't count for owt, u don't really get players risking injury and it's just a kick around. Very disappointed no more signings unveiled, I guess there never was a masterplan just a ballsed up summer and we'll get a couple in drips and drabs, and maybe a panic buy to boot. Harewood not on the scoresheet again, did he play?

taglor if you read my comment again you will see that i put any striker within reason, ie jermaine defoe etc

I'm really pleased that we kept a clean sheet. It's a good result and whilst they're playing for nothing more than pride, you can bet your life they would both want to win the game, they are, afterall, competitive footballers. Well done to the lads.

Sorry I'm not familiar with the players in your within reason bracket, within reason could be anyone in the world depending on an individuals opinion and perspective, you meant in comparison.

Just got back from the game and to be honest yes it was a friendly but even still the football we played at times was very very good, especially for the first goal. Even if it was just a friendly it was inter milan and i can assure you that a few of their players weren't playing it so, particularly dacourt and ibrahimovic. Yes the future does indeed look bright but we are still desperate for a right back although cahill did ok there today and we need more players full stop to beef the squad up. Would just like to mention as well just how well bouma played his distribution was outstanding. I'm off out now to celebrate the victory and to look forward to next week, UP THE VILLA!!!

No Taglor i meant within reason.

Sorry how many people would class Rooney as an Aston Villa transfer target within reason? Yeah no1 lol. When i say strikers within reason that villa could buy i meant id rather have agbonlahor than defoe or bellamy.

Ayersy Wrote: | 23.24BST | Aug 4, 2007

Yeah i echo that jammer, Bouma looked very assured today.

Gabby terrorised world class defenders throughout the game.

Laursen also had a very good game, very keen to impress.

I thought petrov also had a very good game, always looking for a shot on goal.

and Barry was outstanding, at times he controlled the game against world class opponents.

Probably the best result of the season so far. after this result we would deffinately put the frightners on other fans and teams in the prem. what a great way to start the season ;D i went onto sky sports news channel and they didn't even tell u the score verbally. didn't even show the goals, its that sort of thing that pisses me right off!!! if it were the top four they wouldn't stop going on about it!

What a result. You always have to take pre season friendlies with a pnch of salt, but this goes some way in proving that the players are up for it.

Our progress and professionalism is only confounded by the appointment of Doogie Howser MD as official match commentator!

I am proud of our Villa. Moral has probably reached sky high in Villa squad. I must admit even though we are very quiet at the club with regards to transfers, MON has reassured they are coming and they will. I think its gonn be an exciting week and it begins with champions of Italy losing to our young talented team that boasts several home-grown sensations......Yeh!

been to game and i must say very impressed with villa as an attacking force, still a little shaky at the back and in need of a regular right back(although cahill and gardner played well)NRC worked his socks off and had some nice touches, young, gabby, moore all looked sharp, barry, bouma, petrov good distribution and laurson and mellberg solid as ever, taylor didnt have much to to but did everything he had to competently (apart from 1 punch).Harewood only on for 15min so not much chance for min.Does anyone know why Carew was missing?UP THE VILLA

Who's the tosser
Who's the tosser
Who's the tosser in the suit

The Inter guy running onto the field in the suit made my day. Fantastic performance by Villa. Barry was outstanding today. Every time he got the ball he looked assured with some neat touches and never giving the ball away. Brilliantly worked free kick too for the second goal.

I thought all the players who started had good games. Cahill at right back showed a bit of imagination by pushing up now and again to help Young. Reo Coker was very vocal which i liked. You could always here him keeping the players focused which is a positive sign. Bouma also really impressed me with some very good long passing. He switched the play on a number of times and picked out the man perfectly. As for everyone else, i cannot pick a single fault with them.

Good signs for Liverpool! ;D

superb game really exciting, NRC was imense, the firey little get was up for it, just what we need, someone with a bit of steel in the middle of the park, he passed well and had some nice touches aswel. Barry was excellent as ever as was bouma, moore and gabby. If I had one gripe though it was that everything went down our left hand side, which left us a bit lop sided, but nit picking really. All in all a fantastic performance. Would like to add, homer came on for the last 15 and looked crap!!!!

Man Utd lost to inter so that must mean villa are 3 times better than man utd and will win the premiership by 140 points

alextaylor24 Wrote: | 05.48BST | Aug 5, 2007

must admit. cant wait to see NRC against the blues. had a fair few clashes with dacourt and looks assured. i predict at least one red card in the 2 derbies! he was a class act and an inspiration to the team.
why the hell isnt barry playing for england. looked the best player on the pitch for us and them.
nice to see petrov looking sharp anf getting forward
hope we see laursen playing like he did as well. he certainly knew how to react after ibrahimovic shrugged him off!

cant see us finishing higher than 8th unless we significantly deepen the squad. although. its not a bad thing. this is a 5 year plan and we are playing better football every year.

when comparing all the other teams who have spent big, they are looking at short term fixes. west ham look like villa under gregory, ie buying names and man city. dont get me started! he hasnt seen half of them play.

we need to aim to be challenging for top honours in 5 years and accept we wont do that well till then. look at spurs. we can be better, if we buy the right players as we have the awesome youth system and infrastructure at the club.

keep the faith!

just seen the match and it looked good ... gabby really was excellent

remember the last time laursen scored for us though? i think it was against everton ... a game or two after he went out injured again- hope it doesn't happen again, he looked good. in fact they all looked good

All 3 midfielders, Young, Reo-Coker, and Barry could all realistically play themselves into Steve Mclaren (the special one :-\) squad over the next season. Barry should already be there.

How nice is it to see a villa team with so much raw pace? enough to trouble the best of teams ie Inter.

3 or 4 good signings per season rather than 9 or 10 in one summer will definately benefit us in the long run as the team will always very familiar and moral high in the camp.

I had the pleasure telling my two lads after they had come out of the pictures with their friend who is a Man Utd fan, Inter Milan 0 Aston Villa 3 and they both gave out an almighty scream of joy. I didn't get to watch the game but was listening to Ray Houghton's commentry on sky all afternoon and the man was glowing about the villa with a sense of belief, the only negative from him was the right back situation & believing villa need to strengthen in case of injuries, something we all having been saying on this site & hopeing MON will sort out in the next couple of weeks.

BRING ON LIVERPOOL!!!
