Another tribalfootball one: Sheff Utd's Montgomery

Friday, 18 May 07, 06:15 AM · Comments (21)

I'm beginning to get a little tired and somewhat aggravated by people like tribalfootball. One of their latest articles claims we're going in for Sheffield United's Nicky Montgomery at a discount £1.4m.

He plays central midfield for a relegated team, we have a huge transfer budget and want to be challenging for Europe.

So why do people like Tribalfootball, The Sun etc keep linking us to decent, but not excellent, players like Montgomery? I'm sure he's a good footballer, but if we want to be where we've made it public we want to be then why would anyone think we're going to be interested in players like that?

When you hear names like Craig Bellamy and Joey Barton being bandied about then they sound a bit more believable because they're quality players. And that's what we need to push on, quality.

No more Gavin McCann's or Aaron Hughes', we want players of the calibre of the Wayne Bridge's of this world, as was suggested by a reader of the Paul Konchesky article.

We need to think big and buy big and I'm sure that's exactly what's going to happen. Up the Villa!

I have to admit am getting fed up of seeing Villa linked with these players. with who we have been linked to so far aint gonna get us into europe and if O Leary was still in charge these rumours would be true

Monty is a great battler but my 2 yr old cousin can pass better, and that tribal football webshite is a load of bollocks. Dont believe any of it

no way. we don't need players that low of calibre. eventually we'll be linked with big names just wait.

Monty will give you 100%,make no mistake. But that's it.Couldn't pass if his life depended on it.I think some sites just make crap up for the fun of it. (1.4m ? :D )

If you want a midfield destroyer he is the most underrated player around and £1.4m would be a steal for him in spite of what some would tell you. However his passing is none existant so he needs class alongside him for it to work. His trouble is that currently we don't have a player of the calibre going forward for it to work. Having seen Villa take us to pieces a couple of weeks ago I can only think he would be a squad player rather than first choice but as I say, if you want a player to break up opposing attacks he is excellent.

Cheers for the info Sheff Utd fans, good to know what he's about.

We need someone who can break up attack and pass, but when Gabby Agbonlahor made his debut he couldn't control the ball or pass so there's still time for Montgomery to learn!

I know it sounds daft but some of the rumours might have a bit of substance. We all said weeks ago that MON might suprise a few with some shrewd cheap quality buys. Some of these players might just be those. Just look at Maloney for 1M, he was a snip. Jags of Sheff UTD (if we could get him) would be a better buy than Monty though. Don't get me wrong some massive names and buys are on they're way to VP but we have to be patient. Up the Villa.

I'm slightly worried by this rumour after seeing it also appear in the times newspaper. The Montgomery transfer doesn't appear to fit in with O'Neill's plans and it also sends out a lack of ambition which certainly isn't true of the villa under the rule of king Lerner. Surely this is cannot be true as I cannot see where he would fit into our team as we already have players in his position who are clearly of a higher quality than he is. Let's dismiss this speculation as I find it quite embarrassing as it doesn't portray Villa's ambitions that are to reach the Champions League as soon as possible. Can you really see Nick Montgomery lining up against Real Madrid in the Bernabeau, I think not!

I'm guessing those idiots full of crap at tribal football are blues fans as it looks like they're trying to tarnish the name of Aston Villa with insulting rumours like this latest one. Show a little respect lads we're a team with huge ambitions and certainly aren't in the market for people like Montgomery who certainly wouldn't be capable of playing in Europe where I expect Villa to be competing in the near future. Defoe and Brown to Villa plus heard today That Jaaskelian from Bolton could be on his way to Villa Park but would personally prefer Boruc.

I have to be honest it would be some what deflating to hear this type of player had signed on at VP. The noises coming out of the club recently have left me expecting 2 or 3 world class players this summer.

SWP would be excellent as would michael Owen. if were going to be big we need to be thinking big.

The chance of playing for a world class manager like MON will tempt at least 1 big name and the rest will follow.

i also agree with you mate. Im sick of the same old useless player being linked with moves to villa park and i hope that non of this talk comes true.

I dont even think players like Bellamy and Barton are any better than what we already have.

Every team has it's fair share of good and bad links, we're no different.
Apparently Bobo Balde is another expected target, even Celtic fans think he's awful.
Sod the press, let's just wait until September 1st and we'll see what's happened to our squad, eh?

I like the sound of Jaskelinen,Reocoker,Ribery and agree that once one big name comes in others will follow. Also i wonder what influence Nike will have on what players turn up at VP. They are a very powerfull company, just look at the decision to play Ronaldo when he was clearly not fit to play in the world cup final, this was rumoured to be be Nike putting pressure on the Brazilian F.A. ( what about Ronaldo ? i bet MON could get a bit more out of him, he's decaying at AC Milan as we speak )

i think its a bit premature to expect an influx of world class players. making shrewd buys like maloney, young and carew is the way forward at this particular time. it will probably take a couple of years before the damage done by o'leary and taylor will be forgotton by the better players within the prem. however, if we get ourselves into a decent position by next seasons january transfer window we could see one or two big names joining the claret and blue.

personally i think bent would be a good signing as long as he doesn't take up the entire budget. something also has to be done about the full back situation.
