Anti-climax: Nigel Reo-Coker becomes an Aston Villa player

Thursday, 05 July 07, 01:43 PM · Comments (49)

I was getting emails in saying we were unveiling three or four players, somewhere somebody said there was six chairs laid out and there was even someone saying somewhere that it was definitely three players.

Nobody is to blame for the buzz and excitement but was a press conference needed?

I know I'm picking and in the modern game it's almost impossible to keep transfers a secret but come on, a press conference to unveil a player we all knew about that hasn't even started yet, two hours after it was supposed to?

Anyway, the 'marauding midfielder' (I didn't start it and it will be the last time it's used here) has joined and now he's off on holiday after playing for England U21's, for a well earned rest.

I'm not a superstar or a miracle worker. I'm a hard-working person and I give 100 per cent in every game I play.

The reason I joined this club is their aspiration to play in Europe. Martin O'Neill has told me what he is aiming to do and I believe we can achieve it. If you look at last season, they started very well but then had a bad time over Christmas and generally drew a lot of games.

I told Martin that if they had had someone to put away the chances, and Villa had won just half the games they drew, they would be in Europe right now.

Nigel Reo-Coker, 5th July 2007

It will be interesting to see him play next season as he has talent and Martin O'Neill has gone all out for the player so he was clearly part of the 'A' plan.

Expect Shaun Wright Phillips and Harry Kewell (two more players not to get really excited about in my opinion) to follow and maybe a defender or two from Porto. That's it, I'm off for a beer, goodnight.

What a anti climax, glad it's all over though maybe i can get on with my work instead of checking out websites for footie news on potential villa signings.

Please MON give us someone a bit special, someone my son can boast to his school mates about, someone the others teams in the premiership are going to think WOW!

If my calcalations are right, the players that have gone out & with Reo Coker coming in, Villa should be up on the money front, take into consideration the wages and transfer fees gained already, villa havent spent a penny.

Gutted Davis has gone, i thought he had a lot of potential, but then again MON knows what he his doing, i just hope it doesnt come back to bite us.

anti Climax ? Maybe! but only because we've known about it for so long we all have to stop believing silly rumours , anyone can start them , i heard earlier that someones mate works at villa park and six chairs had been set up for the press conference !!!, we are all believing these silly lies and then gettin angry with the club when nothing happens! whereas the club aren't the ones starting them! when MON and Mr. Lerner have something to say then they will say it nobody else! have Faith!i Know its annoying but Players will come!

What an anticlimax! I can't belive I've just watched over two hours of repeating sky sports news bulletins just for that. Someone needs to tell MON and the board what it's like being a fan and putting up with all this anxiety and frustration, I'm on the edge! (I've also gotta stop checking newsnow.co.uk bulletins every five minutes at work)
Still happy to see Nigel sign for us, and in a beautiful looking Villa shirt.
I reckon he'll be a class act, and I'm still pretty confident MON the next quality signings all lined up.(pretty confident) Up the Villa!

Yeah what shirt was that Reo-Coker was wearing?Cant be the official kit because they haven't been officially released yet. Delighted to see Reo-Coker finally sign but I don't really have that feeling of signing a new player as it's clearly been coming for a number of weeks. Not sure if the press conference was really needed. The fact that it was taking place tonight and then the two hour the day convinced me that NRC wasn't the only player that was going to be unveiled but I guess we'll just have to wait a bit longer before we sign anyone else, but we wont have to wait too long!

Many of you need to get a grip on reality. I hope Martin doesn't give a shit what it feels like to be a fan. I hope he is just focussed on making us better, which I am sure he is.

Reo-Coker will be a great signing. He is what we have been crying out for - a fighter, a leader, an aggressive pitbull in the midfield instead of the pussycats that were McCann and Davis. Davis was never good enough. I would have looked good in the team in O'Leary's last season.

Why on earth would we not give Nigel a press conference? Because we knew he was coming? Nice welcome boys.

Welcome to Villa Nigel and well done Martin and Randy. The dead wood is well and truly being cut out, and here's to the next big signing.

PATHETIC!!! Yes, all of you. You should be ashamed. 'we dont need a press conference' 'I expected 3 signings' blah blah blah.
Two years ago we wanted more hype, we wanted big signings. We have just signed an 8.5 million pound midfielder and you whinging blooming brummies are still at it!!! STOP IT!! I've had enough. I'm going to move back to Nottingham and take up my support of Forest again. We were chuffed there just to get a pie at half time.

COME ON.... UP THE VILLA!! WE ARE GOING PLACES AND THIS IS THE START. GET BEHIND THE LAD, GET BEHIND MON, GET BEHIND THE TEAM.

This is the beginning!

Sorry, you all annoyed me but hope we are still friends. See you at the Holte Hotel before the first game.

This is not an anti-climax. We've added a strong player to our squad and it will be the first of several. He can fight it out with Barry, Petrov and Gardener for those two central midfield spots - THAT is strength in depth!

We do not need to go chasing big-money, big-name players. The amount of money we spend, or the fame that a player has might make everyone more excited now, but its the results and performances on the pitch that count. The last thing we want to do is blow a ton of money on a prima donna to leech large amounts of money from us each week in undeserved wages. Anyone remember Collymore? Ballaban? Curcic? Baros? We don't need them.

We were lacking an aggressive presence in the side and now we have one in Reo-Coker. We need a play-making midfielder to energize our attacking play when Berger is unavailable. We are lacking a right back and a centre back, and I have full confidence in MON to sign the best players available to us to fill these positions.

Considering that we do not have any European football to offer next season, with most of next season's European spots all but spoken for, buying young enthusiastic players with plenty of potential is exactly what MON should be doing. It might be unspectacular, but it will be effective.

Why did everyone expect several players to be unveiled at tonight's press conference? If you look at the players MON has signed since January, not one of them was a surprise. It's not fair to expect this of MON and Mr Lerner in their first summer. It will take significant investment year on year to get where we want to be. Let's be patient and give them the chance to impress us before getting on their case. There's plenty of time before the start of the new season. :)

great post by PaulE, i think most of us have been around the block long enough to realise 3 or 4 players dont get paraded in front of the media without prior knowledge from the press. the fact that MON is offloading all our deadwood is a positve sign in itself. When davis did play last season he went on the missing list for long periods and i think we have got a good price for him. lets put our faith in MON and Randy. i cant believe a 30 million pound transfer fund is not enough for some villa fans!?! when did we last spend that amount? lets get into europe and THEN see what quality of player we can attract.

good post Paul

the anti-climax remark was on teh back of the talk that there may be 2 or 3 players introduced ..

but i also disagree to some extent and am basing my position on the fact we've just paid £8.5mn. on one player. we need, in my opinion, atleast five more players and if each one is to cost for arguments sake the same then thats a shed load of cash .. and i actually quite expect us to get them ..

Leroy Wrote: | 03.44BST | Jul 6, 2007

Yeah i agree. One at a time. The quicker we push things through the more we pay and the fewer quality players we get. Lets have a closer look at some experience though, seriously,we have been promised this and obviously we need some experience, not Bellamy, just some older players to help the team gel. Nugent is not an answer and i dont think Defoe is. Laursen is quite slow at back, maybe Curtis Davies would fit the mould, although he is also quite young.

I also agree with PaulE, it is a good signing, we have missed a bit of grit in the team since the days of alpay and Boateng! We have been such a soft touch in recent seasons. If a team cought us early on in the last few seasons they would stroll to victory so im glad to c Reo-Coker in as he is a battler!! I liked McCann but he was extremely limited and didnt know what to do in the final 3rd.

Just looking to the box in the right hand corner and it looks as if we are fast approaching double figures in players out, but in my opinion this is more of a relief than a reason to get worried!
A clearing out job has been needed for quite sometime and it is finally happening, Hughes,Samuel and McCann are all players i have rated at some point but being realistic, we need far better competition if Champions league is to be even considered.

Only position i am kind of worried about is right back!! Is there any decent available ones at the minute?? MON must have someone lined up if he let Hughes go, as Delaney is just too injury prone to count on.

Would love to see SWP, Kone, Sneijder, and what about a cheeky bid for Salgado, he must be gettin on these days ha ha!!

Laughable stuff again. Absolutely amazing that when we sign players that a year ago were totally out of our league all we're getting is derision. I'l never ever understand villa fans the most negative people on the planet.

I looked at the press conference's pictures. Did we hold the press conference in Reo-Coker's basement or something? My goodness.

I'm thrilled about the signing. As the man said, "I'm not a superstar." But he'll provide quality and passion. We should always welcome those attributes.

Now we need to find a striker and a right back. I'd be happy to land Wright-Phillips, but we need defenders more than we need another mid.

I think he was finialising some business that he wanted to unviel last night but due to whatever happened couldnt. I think we will see some action this week, SWP i would say is a definate but i think there could be a few surprises in store come next saturday! :)

would like to say how happy i am that we have finally signed nrc. watched him carefully for the first time during the u21's in holland as i heard he was coming to villa and was thoroughly impressed: box-to-box, aggression, good passer, takes on players, and a really good leader on the pitch.

if you still doubt his potential ask yourself why after one season with west ham and at the age of 19 or 20 curbs made him his captain which then resulted in promotion, which then resulted in an FA cup final?

granted he had a bad-ish season last year but i think that's because he stopped enjoying his football at west ham and nothing more. expect a big season from nrc

I think everyone should just calmdown and trust MON, there is no way would he let so many go if he did'nt have cover sorted, he as already said the Reo-coker deal took a lot of energy up. Well now he has signed and i think things will start to move now, Also judge him on kick-off day! you wait and see he will bring in better than he has let go, this includes Davis although i did like him but if he did'nt want to play his way back into contention well tought... Everyone keep smileing as we will be a force when we turn out against the reds. :)

The Press Conference ran late because they were hoping to announce the signing of at least one and probably two more players. Unfortunately the deals could not be completed in time. The announcement is now likely to be made next week (NRC won't be available then...he's off on holiday), rumours suggest that it may be Lahm and Schneider

Sorry mate but I've got to take you to task. You said you watched Reo-Coker in the U21's and thought he was a good leader on the pitch. Can I ask which penalty did he take in the penalty shoot out - and how many after the goalkeeper was he in stepping up as a leader?
