Aston Villa 0 QPR 1: Same mistake as last season?

Wednesday, 24 September 08, 03:37 PM · Comments (84)

It's easy to look back now and ask the question and at kick off I wasn't thinking it was a mistake but hopefully next season, in the same tournament, we'll not rest players but play a team that should be capable of winning.

I was even suggesting we should bring in some of the youngsters so this isn't a blame Martin O'Neill post, but come on, next season lets put out a team that can win it and not lose to lower league opposition.

If we were seriously challenging for the league or were one of the teams you'd fancy to win the UEFA Cup or if we had a proper run at the FA Cup every season then I'd understand, but we're not at that level yet. Soon, I can see it coming, but we're not at the level yet and this was a wonderful opportunity to progress.

Still, there is next season and hopefully next season we'll start with a striker that knows where the goal is. I'm leaving it at that tonight, because one of our regular visitors is going to run down his street naked and I'm looking for a webcam where we can see that - should be quite amusing.

Aston Villa: Guzan; Gardner, Knight, Cuellar, Shorey; Osbourne, Petrov, Barry, Young; Carew, Harewood. Subs: Friedel, Agbonlahor (for Harewood, 67), Delfouneso, Davies, Salfou, Routledge (for Osbourne, 67), Reo-Coker.

Didn't watch the game, but it has to be said that the team he fielded should be beating QPR at home - unless that is Luke Young he played in midfield :)

Disappointing.

Hmm - a real shame that, but not a huge shock. Unfortunately it does highlight the fact that we don't yet have the required strength in depth to 'shuffle the pack'...Marlon Harewood isn't a sufficient replacement for Gabby and if either Carew or Gabby get injured during the season then our prem position will suffer.

All that being said, we have to be realistic and try and forget about this one as quickly as possible - we probably couldn't have sustained a challenge on four fronts this year anyway - and personally if there's one that I want to get knocked out of and forget about asap - it's this one.

I hope this game shows MON that we need cover upfront, Harewood is utter and complete shite. Osbourne??? We're mugs giving this guy a 3yr contract, he's a Championship player at best. I predicted in my other posts we'd get turned over tonight and i was exactly right. We cannot afford NOT to play our best team, The reserve players are just not good enough..

i totally agree with the fact that we should be putting our 1xi out for this competetion, however with the side we put out 2night we should still be beating lower league sides. i havent seen/ heard the performance about2night but it obviously wasnt of the highest standards, other wise with that side (including Carew, Young, Barry and Agbonlahor) we would have got a result.

Are any of us really that bothered we're out?

We've got a lot of games to play this season and we still have a relatively small squad. One unimportant competition isn't going to be missed. And let's face it, the League Cup means almost nothing these days. Look at Spurs last season if you want more proof of that.

I'd much rather us be out now and play to full capabilities in the League and Europe.

It's true in a way - when you think about it, aside from the defence - the only changes were Osbourne for Reo-Coker and Gabby for Marlon. It's probably a bit tough to blame it all on Marlon and Osbourne (regardless of how good/utterly sh!t you think they are)....

Not good enough - you'd have thought they'd have gone out with a rocket in their asses after our disappointment last year.....

i think its as much about continuity more than anything else ..

6 players started tonight that wouldn't be expected to normally start. call it 5 (as we're not going to count guzan) - it's half the team - there is clearly going to be a break in continuity - at least when arsenal do it they do it properly - the whole team almost

We should be putting out a stronger team, but the fact remains that we had more than enough chances to get a result tonight.

Saying that, Harewood coming in for Gabby was probably one change too many. He is clearly short of match sharpness and I feel that Gabby would have at least forced the keeper into a few saves and probably would have tucked one away for us.

Harewood was wasteful, but it's probably not all his fault - he just hasn't had much pitch time recently.

Have we had this discussion before? Oh well here goes......

You need a squad. The same 13 players cannot compete on all fronts. We now have a squad. Yes some of the squad are weaker than the starting line up. But good players will not sit on the bench of a team who are not in the Top 4/Champions League.

Until we make the next level we will need to rely on the likes of Harewood in the silly games during the season. Deal with the facts and stop moping around.

Or you'll end up like Taglor.

Disappointing, but perhaps unrealistic that we could keep winning twice a week. QPR aren't to be underestimated so they should get some credit for the win.

I would like us to try the approach of starting with a strong team and then taking players off, rather than the other way round.

If we can maintain our form in the other comps, it'll soften the blow (I'm in the camp that this is a cup that's well worth going for, but we are trying to achieve other things this season). We may be glad of the rest come January.

Hope we take it out on Sunderland.

Maybe four games in ten days is too much for some of the players, but for the others who've been on the bech..well, I hoped they could have taken more intiative. I feel shitty losing to any team with Fitz Hall on it.

Very disappointed about the performance tonight.
We're still two quality players short at least IMO and how we could have done with a creative midfielder and a quality striker to call upon tonight when we needed to change things and rest players.
Maybe things would have been different if we could have called upon Milner or Sidwell but these things happen and we should be prepared...especially up front.
From what i could hear tonight, Marlon had the cows arse / banjo thing going on and we couldn't hold onto possession in key areas.
It's not that good that we are out of this competition but at least we can maybe concentrate more on the other prizes now and strengthen in January.

Foot ball is a funny game enit?

We win three games away from home on the trot and then lose at home to a championship side. I'm annoyed that we didn't beat them but overall I'm not actually bothered, the league cup is just so unattractive. We could easily have won this game as well considering the chances we had, so luck just wasn't with us tonight.

I would rather see us higher up in the premiership table than winning the carling cup because the latter means nothing to me really.

I do think thant MON dawdling in the transfer market will cost us dearly this season.
I just pray we don't have to wait as long for a top quality striker as we did for a "reasonable quality" right back.
I wouldn't fault MON for resting a few though. This competition has lost all credibilty since we last won it and we have bigger fish to fry. It's far more important to win on Saturday and progress in the UEFA Cup.

Its hardly resting a whoile side is it. What happens when we have 5/6 injuries which will happpen at some point - we put on a performacnce like that. And to think yesterday people were saying we had a squad good enough now to challenge for the title - hilarious!

Im disappointed with the loss tonight naturally. I think if there is one competition to fail in, its this one so I'm not going to lose sleep over it either.

When fringe players are brought in for games like this, they aren't going to play the best, free flowing football every time as they aren't used to playing with each other. When everyone knows each other game you can play better as a team.

Personally I think we should have put a strong team out (minus maybe Laursen for Cuellar, Petrov for Gardner) and played it by ear.... if we are winning and look comfortable, then start bringing key 1st team players off to rest them.

Tonight proves our fringe players just aren't as good as the first team players and maybe more quality should be bought come January. (Also highlighted in the poor performance at home in 2nd leg against Odenese where I nearly fell asleep).

Roll on Sunderland, they'll get the full force of a pissed off Villa team sat!

For Christ's sake you lot - we're out of the Carling Cup and who cares? Not me. I would take an FA cup final, a UEFA cup semi or a top 5 place in the league ahead of winning the cup without a moment of hesitation.

We played a second string team in the cup - that's what teams fighting on multiple fronts do, and for good reason. It gives some of the top players a rest and gives valuable game-time to the next tier. Ideally we'd win and be able to continue blooding developing players in the later rounds but evidently we're not yet a good enough squad to be able to guarantee a victory against a decent championship side with our 2nd string. Only the top 3 in the league are. But just because we're not there already, it does NOT mean that we should have sent our entire 1st team out there tonight after a very congested couple of weeks - we've got bigger much fish to fry, some players need a rest and others needed their chance to impress and gel into the team.

I'm seriously tiring of the oscillations between ecstacy and agony here. Get some perspective, attempt pragmatism and even if you can't manage that, aim at consistency.

As someone mentioned above, some of the backup are either not up to it, not in MoN's plans, or a bit of both. Hopefully this result demonstrates the strengthening we need to do in January. I've only seen Osbourne play a couple of times, but it's clealr he has some way to go before he's good enough to be rotated into the first XI. That he started tonight and Routledge didn't shows that Routledge shouldn't be considered a memeber of our first team squad. MoN obviously doesn't rate him. Harewood isn't up to it, and that he didn't start against Litex shows that MoN knows this. This means we must sign another good wide player in January, and a top class striker. We could also use another right back, but at this stage that's probably the cherry on top. To prove this, here's my best guess at MoN's Villa 2nd XI. There will be gaps!

Guzan

GAP; Cuellar; Knight; Shorey

Milner; Sidwell; Osbourne; Gardner

GAP; Delfouneso

This assumes Reo-Coker and Petrov are both in the first XI, although were Milner to come in, we would have NO backup wide player. We only need these two players (three including a right back!) and we'll have quality in depth in all areas. Depending on how good these players are, we could even have a squad worthy of a top 4 side. The good news I'm hopeful that MoN shares this view, so, IF the right players are available in January, I think we can expect a couple of exciting signings.

As for the result, I would say it's a little worrying and a little disappointing, but as long as morale isn't compromised, no great damage done. I've said it before, but the League Cup is not worth winning for a great club like us, especially given that we should be qualifying for Europe through the league.

The league is the prize. If it meant sacrificing 4th place to win the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, or Carling Cup...which competition would you say is worth it? Carling Cup = games for squad players. If I have any criticism, it's that MON just didn't play the reserve squad.

They beat us fair and square, and we didn't exactly put out our b-squad.

Agreed about the striker, but Ashton isn't the answer. He is made of glass. He has already missed several games this seasons.

It may well be an easy thing to say, particulary after a loss, but we just dont have the fire power to manage for the whole season. Shorey and Harewood are championship players, Gardener is no right back, we need another striker anyway, even with the Hare. I know i keep beating onabout it but maybe its more visable for others after a performance like that.

Also, we have startedquite well the last two seasons only to faulter in thelast third. Same will happen again unless reinforcements are brought in.

But in the long term that result doesnt mean a thing i guess, hardly inspiring stuff though especially at home.

Worst case scenario last night in my opinion was not loosing but the possibility of having to face extra time. I was hoping for a Villa win but I honestly believe this result suits us better than if we were to win after 120mins or on pens.
Compared to the likes of Arsenal who put out a totally different team, Villa are not yet strong enough to rotate the team and keep the momentum going. Let’s face it although it would be great to win the League Cup I think Martin and Randy have bigger ambitions and are striving towards them.
3 points at the weekend and we will soon forget about Q.P.R.
I think the one major thing we can take from last night, is the one thing we all new, in January must come more cover and fingers crossed, a quality striker to challenge Gabby and Big John. I’ll take any one of Owen, Podolski, Falcao, and Ashton even Crespo or Ronaldo is worth a shot till the end of the season.
3-1 at the weekend to the Villa
The future is bright (even brighter hopefully come Jan 31st when we have a new striker and 3 or 4 new quality players to cover a still small squad!!!)
:D :D :D

good to see some of the old names back on here. And taglor is back!!!
I think some of the "keep the faith Brigade" are missing the point as to why some are critical of last night.
Its not the going out of the carling cup or losing to a championship side. To be honest going out could beenfit us in the long run and these things happen.
Last night just highlights what a lot of us fear could lead to our season running out of steam in the later part again. we dont have the strength in depth to our squad to win games with injuries, suspensions and tiring players. Last year we didnt have the option to rotate because our squad was so threadbare. This year we have one or 2 more options but there are going to be times this season through the reasons above where 5/6 first team players are not avaailable at a time. we still dont have the depth to cope with that and last night showed that for me. Not having a half decent back up striker is ridiculous, having to play midfielders in defence at the start of a season is ridiculous.
some people on here in the last few days have even been saying we can challenge for the title - really???
And there have been other posts on here, i wont mention names but stating the time is now to say i told you so to all the moaners! Guys we have played 5 league games with everyone fit(no moaners have even doubted our first team is very competitive) it is our squad that will be put to the test later on in the season that the so called moaners complain about and have stated will cost us. If we finish the season strongly finish top 5 or 6 and the squad depth doesnt cost us then thats the time to say we told you so.

We have made a great start in the league and i really hope it continues and beleive it probably will for a while but as things stand i dont think we will finish the seaosn strongly and we will slip away.

Message to talusmanvillafan in responce to "super hoop go fuck yerself" as you said your self - "i thought QPR were well worth the win". Well they were, don't forget we were the ones that were away, playing an "inform prem team" , with our own under strength team. So you sorry sack of shit we will see you in the prem next year, that is if your season doesn't do it's usual and nose dive before Xmas and we pass you on the way up. To the rest of you more civil Villa fans , you have an exciting young team and I hope you do do well this year.

Oh and I would like to point out...Man City AKA 'The richest club in the world' lost last night to a league 1 side! Makes our loss look like nothing to that! We lost to an up and coming Championship side...

Been on here all night have you Talusmanvillafan . Get yourself a life. Make sure you know what big words mean before you use them. You've never seen a twat in your life let alone tried one. Now pack your lunch box and off to school with you it's nearly 9 o'clock.

I really do not understand why we put that team out.

The Carling Cup Final next year with Aston Villa vs ??????? would be a great day out.

Also consider, Man Utd and Arsenal do not take the early rounds seriously - so they could easily be knocked out - (I think we beat Man Utd one season 6-0). After last night three more winning rounds and AV are having a party at Wembley. MON would have played his best team in the quarters and semis - so that means if he played his best team last night and for the next round - an additional two matches for our Big Guns.

Just don't make sense.

MON is still god

The bottom line is that the 11 players that MoN put out should easily have been good enough to beat a team in a lower division. All 11 players are part of our normal match day squad of 17. The fact that we lost was down to missed chances, a poor performance and a reality check on the squad strength.

People have been blinded by our excellent season start to the huge gap between our starting 11 +2/3 and the rest.

Honestly, I could not care less that we were beaten in the mickey mouse cup. I said in a previous post (prior to the QPR game) that i'd prefer three points in the league than a league cup win! Hopefully last night will serve as a wake up call and we can stay picking up wins in the league.

Oh yeah - and pray we dont get injuries

I would much prefer the uefa cup final or challenging the top 4 , lets concentrate on those !

hahahaha! Dreamland boys! PURE UNADULTERATED DREAMLAND!

You couldn't even beat QPR! QPR FFS!!

Lets be honest, the only cup you really had a hope of winning was the Carling Cup and you have been knocked out by a Championship side on your home turf at the first time of asking! Dear oh dear!

Nevermind, I'll let you lot get back to daydreaming about being a big club.

Now to be quite honest I wouldn't bother coming onto other teams blog's but after your pathetic behaviour on the Spurs vs Villa game I just couldn't resist!

I think the side we put out was more than capable of winning last night. Could it be us as fans who take the competition too lightly? I played a match instead of going and with only 21,000 in the stadium it surely plays into qpr's hands. I know as professionals the players should be able to play in an empty stadium and win but the buzz of a full house could have been worth at least a goal for us. The club need to find a way of attracting fans for less attractive fixtures. How about 1st round free for season ticket holders?

Toatlly agree, the team fielded should have been more that capable of beating QPR, and I do not blame MON what so ever, just a poor performance from a team that could and shuld have done better!

So we shouldn't care about being knocked out of the Carling Cup by QPR?

Good grief! Of course we should care, I'm livid about the defeat.

As MON said, that team was strong enough to win, they should have dispatched QPR no problem.

Let's hope this was a one off, or it wont be long before somebody is saying "Who cares we're out of every competition, the league is what is important" 8O

I personaly have backed MONS judegement without question since he arrived ,But i will never understand him saying I beleave our squad is strong enough to lift the cup this year after being dispatched previously in the same round. Then immediately after saying that he fields 6 reserves ? I do agree that with the chances we created up front we should have scored at least 2, but there again we have NOT paid 18 million for Robbie Keen like liverpool did and who is still yet to find the net. So field your strongest team every time is my belief irrispective of the game involved unless you have NO OTHER OPTION. Do not save them for the next premership game that being sunderland this time just in case you slip up twice..
