Aston Villa in the Intertoto and this is how it's going to work

Monday, 12 May 08, 01:59 AM · Comments (53)

Right, we've got Intertoto football for next season and with a little help from a few forum users, we've sort of figured out how it's all going to work.

We've kept checking the official club site, but honestly, was I that stupid to think they'd be up to date or helpful?

Right, because we're in the Premier League, considered one of the stronger leagues, we only have to enter at the third round of the Intertoto and win the two legged match, to enter the UEFA cup proper.

The team that goes the furthest in the UEFA Cup who entered via Intertoto qualification will get a trophy - we'll get nothing for beating whoever we beat in the matches, apart from European football.

The first match will be on either July 19th or 20th with the return leg a week later on July 26th or 27th. We won't know for sure until July 12th or 13th who we are playing because that is the date of the second leg of round two.

But, we can narrow it down, just for fun. We know that Lisburn Distillery from Northern Ireland are playing Turun Palloseura from Finland in the first round, so one of those two teams are going to go on to play the team that finishes 4th in the Danish Superligaen.

Fourth place is currently occupied by F.C. Copenhagen, who have a certain Swedish ex Aston Villa player currently playing for them. However, the Danish league still has a few games left, so this might change.

Whoever finishes 4th plays the winner of the above match and the winner of that match plays Aston Villa.

I believe if we win the intertoto 3rd round we are then placed into the 2nd qualifying round of the uefa cup. So to get to the uefa cup proper we will be playing 4 matches.

Ive just checked the official uefa websites, and we will play in the intertoto 3rd qualifying round a 2 legged game, then if we win that we will enter the 2nd round qualifying round of the uefa cup, win that and were in the 1st round of the uefa cup for real ! up the villa

Copenhagen 4th in Danish league. I think we are alright as long as we avoid them. European football means Damian is absolutely right in saying we need 10 players for next season as aquad is far to small to accommodate extra games. Also Bosingwa is signing for Chelsea this week. I'm glad he's getting a definate transfer as I'm sick of seeing his name linked with Villa.

At the moment the nummber 4 in Denmark is Odense SK, which to me sounds a lot less dangerous than FC Kopenhagen.

1 Aalborg aB 29 19 5 5 62 54-34
2 FC Midtjylland 29 15 8 6 53 42-30
3 FC Kopenhagen 29 14 9 6 51 40-26
4 Odense BK 30 12 15 3 51 44-21
5 AC Horsens 30 12 9 9 45 42-41

i dont really want to play them but seeing as ive convinced the missus that following villa in europe would be a great idea based on 2 nights in copenhagen i cant really complain!

turun palloseura's star player is mika aaritalo - former villa youth team player, and on fm 08 they are pretty decent!

I am very pleased Villa are in the ''Pre Qualifying Rounds of the UEFA cup'' (otherwise known as the Intertoto), European football in the sunshine, with something to play for again. A pre-season without meaningless friendlies! Well done Villa, hard luck Small Heath.

If we win our Intertoto two legged match we enter the UEFA cup at the second round I think. That should be ok and if we get alot of new players in we can definatly compete in Europe.

The fair play League is totally stupid, how can they justify letting a team that finished 17th in the PL and just avoided relegation represent us in Europe? It should have gone to 6th spot the extra place. But then again you could say how can they let a team outside the PL play in Europe when they win the F.A cup

Oh well we've done it! Has the 10mins with Mellberg thing gone ahead yet?

I can't load the official site on my PC anymore. I can't load that personal profile site, bebo either. Maybe it's a sign that i shouldn't go on crap websites ;)

So our path to Europe is going to simple. Beat two shite teams from N. Ireland and Finland. Easy enough. But then so was Varteks...

Darragh Wrote: | 17.42BST | May 12, 2008

We'll just have to wait and see. I for one am optimistic. I really hope the situation goes one way or the other fairly soon cos if it drags on over the summer it will hinder our chances of focusing on getting a replacement.

Looks like he is thinking of staying to me. I'd say he will stay if there are some early big name signings before the first leg in july. I think he would be mad to go to Liverpool. They are the most likely to drop out of the top four.

Darragh
Darragh Wrote: | 18.06BST | May 12, 2008

Also, nearly every liverpool supporter if spoken to has made comments like 'He'll make a good reserve team captain'. I think he'll be making a big mistake if he leaves a club where he is loved to go a club whos fans (and possibly the manager) see him as a squad player.

MON used to play for that Irish side (look at the wiki link and the notable players), wouldnt it be brill if we could play them (and also cuz they'd be easier than a danish side) but with the transfers coming in this year we should be able to handle even copenhagen (sp?)

FC Midtjylland just got through losing, so they're still firmly in the picture. Copenhagen would jump to second with a defeat of Aalborg later on today.

Woulfeman
Woulfeman Wrote: | 22.29BST | May 12, 2008

Also Copenhagen have got 3 of their last 4 games at home. I reckon it will be Odense or FC Midtjylland. Either way I think we underestimate them at our peril. A young team in Europe for the first time, 2 months before the end of the deadline, (so no signing just yet, that's the way MON likes it and that's fine by me) you never know. While Im confident we can beat them, let's not let Mr Complacency have a seat at the feast that is Aston Villa's European Adventure!

Well, Copenhagen took care of business today. So our possible opponents look like this, with three matches to go (to be played May 15, 18 and 24th) :

2 FC Kopenhagen 30 54 18
3 FC Midtjylland 30 53 11
4 Odense BK 30 51 23
5 AC Horsens 30 45 1
6 Esbjerg 30 42 7 (still theoretically in reach)

Badger Wrote: | 00.32BST | May 13, 2008

I agree with Matt Clarke; Finnish, Danish or Irish, I don't care.
If we can't beat any of them, we don't deserve to be in the Uefa cup.
Just as I predicted fifth or sixth for this season, I'm predicting a decent run in the Uefa for next season.
As has been said many times, it's all about who we sign in the summer

Simon L. Read
Simon L. Read Wrote: | 01.11BST | May 13, 2008

I agree. Can't wait for the Intertoto/UEFA Cup! We'll take any of these teams out no problem. AC Horsens? That would be funny. FC Copenhagen would get pasted too. If we failed to beat any of those we simply dont deserve to be there.

Probably be season ticket holders who went to five or more away games this season or something!

Lets hope we sell out Villa Park and get it rockin on a european night when they come back to our place!

FC Copenhagen, if they are avoided ... i'm a happy man!

I r'ber when we played that Czech? (eastern europe) team and Villa abandoned travel arrangements for the away game cos only 1 guy wanned to go. I bet it was Taglor.

FC Copenhagen isn't bad, but I don't think they're any better than, say, Wigan. We should beat any team we play in the qualifying phase. But we still need to play well, because obviously we're capable of losing to Wigan occasionally.
