Aston Villa to play CSKA Moskva in next round of UEFA Cup, then either Spurs or Shakhtar

Friday, 19 December 08, 06:04 AM · Comments (71)

The draw is taking place and we've got CSKA Moscow, or CSKA Moskva as UEFA have it on their site, in the next round of the UEFA Cup.

Anyway, the full draw will be published below when it is complete, but for now, let's look forward to February.

The first match is either February 18th or 19th with the away leg on February 26th. Their stadium holds 78,000 and seeing as I've never been to Moscow, I'm booking my tickets now. I just hope the club are a little nicer about me getting a ticket this time.

If we win this match we'll then face weither Spurs or Shakhtar in the last 16 and you've got to fancy we'd beat either of them.

Full draw of last 32 is:

Paris St Germain v Wolfsburg
FC Copenhagen v MANCHESTER CITY
NEC Nijmegen v Hamburg
Sampdoria v Metalist Kharkiv
Braga v Standard Liege
ASTON VILLA v CSKA Moscow
Lech Poznan v Udinese
Olympiakos v St Etienne
Fiorentina v Ajax
Aalborg v Deportivo La Coruna
Werder Bremen v AC Milan
Bordeaux v FC Galatasaray
Dynamo Kiev v Valencia
Zenit St Petersburg v VfB Stuttgart
Marseille v FC Twente
Shakhtar Donetsk v TOTTENHAM

Final 16 draw to be played on 12 March and 18/19 March:

Werder Bremen/AC Milan v Olympiakos/St Etienne
ASTON VILLA/CSKA Moscow v Shakhtar Donetsk/TOTTENHAM
Lech Poznan/Udinese v Zenit St Petersburg/VfB Stuttgart
Paris St Germain/Wolfsburg v Braga/Standard Liege
Dynamo Kiev/Valencia v Sampdoria/Metalist Kharkiv
FC Copenhagen/MANCHESTER CITY v Aalborg/Deportivo La Coruna
Marseille v FC Twente v Fiorentina/Ajax
NEC Nijmegen/Hamburg v Bordeaux v FC Galatasaray

This is easily the worst draw we could of had!
I bet MON is thinking that he should of actually tried to win the Hamburg game now!!
At least we got to the last 32 i suppose.
Nevermind, it gives us more time to concentrate on the top 4 finish!

Why did it have to be another game in a cold climate! Couldn't UEFA give us a nice game in Spain or on the Southern French coast?

The only thing I will say about our chances is that the Russian League doesn't start until March, so they might not be at match fitness. Might give us a slight advantage.

I think MON should rest 7 for this game as well..!!!!!(Im optimistic that we will make some quality signings during the window which will give us a fighting chance for this game!!) This game will be a challenge no doubts about that, but with the game being in Feb and with the new players having time to settle then we should get into the last 16...we need a good reslut at home however! This is the hardest we could've got in my eyes ... Unless we get a big win at home I think are journey will be over in Europe. That's what happens when you don't go out to win every game ... If and a big if we win the next round would be a lot easier.

Still believe no-one to fear in this competition. Keep the faith.

Tough, tough, TOUGH draw that. Sorry but just cannot see us going much further in this now.

No use crying over spilt milk, but Nijmegen and then Boreaux/Galatasary for Hamburg I see. That is a far preferable route than the one we've ended up with.

Ouch, 2nd leg in Russia is going to be extremely difficult. Was praying we'd hold out for St Etienne. Ah well, it'll be just as difficult for them to come over here so we'd just better make that 1st leg count big time. No away goals!!!

I didn't realise it would be pre-season for them. That offers us an advantage, but we need to protect the delicate hamstrings of Gabby and Young while we're out there.

Let's hope we can take a lead with us to Moscow.

Moscow. In February. That will be brutal believe me. I'm speaking as a England fan who went out there to watch the national team.

We'll need a 2 goal lead to take out there to stand any chance at all.

Ground does hold 78,000. I think we'll be rattling around in that to be honest with you. A lot of folks spent up for the Hamburg visit. I doubt whether we'd sell more than 500 tickets for the away leg.

I agree with Stocky, the whole point in being in Europe is to test yourselves against the very best. Yes its a tough draw, but I still fancy us to come through. If we can get a couple of goals lead in the first leg then I see no problems in seeing out the tie.

I reckon that it will be an English 1-2 in Europe this season, with both trophies heading back our shores. I see no reason Villa can't be the one to be holding the UEFA cup come May.

Surely they will have to re-arrange the Chelsea fixture on the 21.02.09.

If we are still in prime position in the league at this time, I would hope MON rests a few big guns again, as I am more concerned finishing higher up the league. We should hopefully have decent replacements in Jan who are capable of containing and controlling a game.

I honestly fail to see the problem, yeah they won all four of their games, but for three of our games we put out a reserve side and still qualified comfortably despite the two losses, if we can beat Ajax at home, and our reserve side can be the first to beat Slavia Prague at their ground, then there is no reason our full strength Villa side (plus a few extra additions in January AS WELL AS a hopefully fully fit again John Carew can't overcome Moscow.

UTV!!! If we can get past this hurdle, then we are more than capable of beatng Spurs (Who I tip to go through too, although Redknapps comments about managers wanting to get out of Europe left me a little reluctant to back to)

Think you need a visa to get into Russia as well, so don't forget to factor that in.

Check which Moscow airport you're flying into as well. There's 5 of them!!! Don't forget its a massive city this. 10 times the size of Brum (10.5 million inhabitants).

Anyone know whether CSKA's new ground will be open by Februrary?Or will they still be using Dinamo Moscow's ground? If its the latter, it only holds 36,000. Luzhni Stadium is the one that holds 78,000 - AND CSKA do not play there. Unless someone can prove otherwise.

WORST CASE SCENARIO!!! Christian – you are a complete wimp, a nailed-on scaredy-cat.

Why are you so afraid? If we think we’re a top four club we should be relishing this match. Also, because Moskva are are a proper football side we will approach the game properly, like Ajax, and therefore are more likely to win it. Staff24 is right - they will not fancy playing us.

I am not saying this out of fear, but I do think Villa were handed a tough draw. CSKA Moscow is a good team and that is a difficult second leg. Then the next round is no peach.
Look at the effect Harry Redknapp has had on Spurs. To me they are threat in any of the cups they are in especially if they do well with loan signings.
And Shaktar Donetsk are experience European campaigners that if it weren't for a late Donati goal would've made the last 16 of the Champions League recently. If the Villa get through those two and into the quarterfinals then I make them favorites to win the Cup no matter who is left. They will have earned a place in the last 8!
