Aston Villa v Stoke: Let's not make a meal of this, win a t-shirt, text updates and banter

Sunday, 01 March 09, 03:01 AM · Comments (219)

See what I did? It came to me in my sleep last night and I'm actually quite surprised I remembered it. But after yesterday, it is so important we don't and some might even say that Martin could see this happening.

If you haven't watched any of the matches from yesterday, Liverpool just didn't look up for it, Arsenal were just what is turning into their usual self and Chelsea, while they should have scored more, were actually lucky to get three points in the end.

If we win today, we stay in fourth place but we go eight points ahead of Arsenal in fifth and we'll be one point behind Liverpool and Chelsea, who are both on 55 points, although Chelsea have a better goal difference.

It's almost as if automatic qualification is now within our grasp and then the real spending for players can begin. Fourth place would be an excellent end to the managers third season, but image not having to worry about qualification and we finish in the top three? It would be absolutely fantastic.

So, with no rumours to talk of today, this is going to be the match post too and following on from yesterday, they'll be a t-shirt given out to the best comment made, which will likely go on until the very early hours of tomorrow morning and I'll be updating the post as and when we have more news.

So, three points today and we're a step closer and with Arsenal and Chelsea both playing on Tuesday, they could set it up very nicely for us when we play Manchester City on Wednesday - imagine them both dropping points for us?

First Small Update

The t-shirt winner for yesterday was steve23.Steve, if you don't know what to do, pop back to the post from yesterday for info, I've commented on what you have to do.

Team News

Friedel, Cuellar, Davies, Knight, L Young, Milner, Petrov, Barry, A Young, Heskey, Agbonlahor.

Subs: Guzan, Reo-Coker, Carew, Gardner, Delfouneso, Harewood, Shorey.

Match Updates

First 5: Despite playing four against five in the middle our movement is good and we are controlling this match, early on I know, but we are.

9: I think it's fair to say that it is all us at the moment. Stoke are sitting back and it seems to be exactly what they've come to do today.

Was Sorensen this good at coming for crosses when he played for us? I know, I know, I'm just going to have a little fun with him. Sorry.

12: Corner for Stoke. It was, I think, the first time they went forward and it got a bit scrappy. Nothing came of the corner though and with a bit of luck they'll remember that they have to sit back.

14: Friedel has the ball and he's looking to pass out to someone close but there really is nobody so he has to hit long. Hopefully they'll start passing from the back soon, we're going to need to, if we're going to break them down. A corner for us.

15: The corner doesn't beat the first man, but it's still early and Ashley will get plenty in today.

20: The commentator has just mde a reference to Stoke doing well against the top five this season.  Do you think it we were fifth, it would still be called top five?

21: I'm not very good at reading lips but Barry just got pulled up for a foul and I'd swear he shouted out, or it looked like it anyway 'f*&k off Howard' - referring to the referee, Howard Webb.

25: Another corner. Make that another another corner. Nothing from both of them. I'm sensing we need something in this half otherwsie they might sit further back in the second. They're doing a good job of it at the moment. I can smell something though ...

28: The first ten minutes were actually quite hopeful but since then, while it still is mostly all us, there seems to be nowhere to go apart from the long ball as they have too many men back. We need something to come good for us.

29: Yellow card for Shawcross and a free kick for us about 35 yards out. Young will no doubt have a go.

30: Actually it was Milner and he hit the wall. But Milner worked hard to get the ball back to Barry on the right who put in a decent cross with his right foot that just missed both players.

Zat KNight just heads over. Nice cross from Milner but Zat just hits over - not far and more like it.

34: Silly silly yellow card for Ashley Young. He said something to the ref, complaining becasue a decision didn't go his way. The replay shows it shouldn't and Young has a yellow.

38: Milner is everywhere today. He started on teh right but he's basically playing across the midfield, even making his way over to Ashley Young territory with Young still on the line. You really can't fault his effort and Thomas Sorensen is catching everything that is crossed into the box.

41: Petrov has a shot from 30 yards out. It goes wide, but I think we're going to need more of those if we're to score as I don't think we're made Sorensen make a real save yet.

45: Petrov. 1-0. Lovely.

Half Time Update

I said it on 41 minutes, that we'd need more shots like the one Petrov took if we're going to get anything and four minutes later, as if he was reading my thoughts, he did and we went one up.

James Milner has been everywhere and as it stands now would be man of the match, closely followed by Petrov who has been involved with most things but the onus is very much on us in the second half to not throw this away and get another one or two.

Stoke will likely come out differently and we have to be ready for that. All in all though, we have to be happy and I don't know a reason why we shouldn't be. I'm going for a sandwich.

Second Half

Looks like Sorensen couldn't face standing in front of the Hotle End for the second half, he doesn't come out. Instead, Stoke, bring on the substitute keeper. With a bit of luck, he won't be so good at coming for crosses.

52: Is it just me, or have they come out playing two up front instead of the one in the first half? It's probably just me, but this should open it up for us, if they have.

53: Okay, it does look like 4-4-2 but they we're playing someone up with Beattie, but now it looks like they might be going 4-3-3? Have they gone mad or is it me? Fuller is on for someone.

61: Much better from Stoke this half and since Fuller came on and they went 4-3-3 but you've got to fancy that we'll get them on the break - it is one of our strengths.

64: there is a reason why people say Barry has a gifted left foot; his right is horrible. Well, not that bad if you remember the cross in the first half, but the one he just made was awful. Stoke have now made three subs - no more left.

66: Just an observation but I've got a feeling Heskey will be coming off soon - he's looking tired. We're getting back into this match by the way.

71: This is turning into end to end stuff. We've got another corner but nothing comes of it.

73: We need a second goal and Heskey needs to come off. Not becasue he's not had a decent game, but becasue he's looking tired and I think we need some fresh legs. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nathan over Carew and Harewood - only because I fancy he's going to be a star soon and Martin O'Neill knows it.

76: Okay, it's a smiling Carew for Heskey. He'll go score now!

79: Beautiful. I told you he'd score! Petrov passes to Carew at the edge of the box who sort of flicks the ball, but very powerfully, over the top of the keeper and in the back of the net. That is it, we've won. For anyone that isn't sure - he meant that.

83: Carew wins the ball out wide on the right and crosses for Gabby who really should have scored. Maybe Nathan should get a run and Gabnby gets a little rest?

85: Stoke beat Fridel but not the post.

87: Stoke get one back. Please, not today.

8-0 win today should also see us on level goal difference with Liverpool, but I'll settle for 6-0.

I also predict Milner will score, Benitez will be fired in the summer and by the last fixture Hiddink will be looking more like Bruce and Vice Versa.

Last?

I am looking forward to this game. In the last 10 days we could have been mistaken if you spent all your time on AVFC Blog that Villa are sitting very comfortably in 4th, 5pts off Arsenal and only 4pts behind 2nd place with a game in hand. Some people on here have forgotten how good this season is going and should grow up.
Even if we LOSE both games to Stoke and Man Citeh, we will still be ahead of Arsenal and just behind the top 2. If Villa don't win, MON will lose the fans ? If Villa don't win and MON loses the fans, then good riddance to yu all. Go support manure!

Onto the game, a part of me is telling me this Stoke game will pan just like the first time we met them. CHOKE! It rings of the Newcastle and Boro games and we all remember what happened then? I just hope that Villa have gotten mentally tougher as the season has progressed and I hope that the boys that have been rested and do play go on and really prove a point today. Although I wouldn't care if we won with an all-to-familiar 90th minute winner. I think we will win. I am certain of it. And I hope we win because I'd hate to see some of the ''sheep'' [Nan, I love yu!] no longer keep this blog balanced.

For the record, I think people who are criticising MON for a lack of activity in the transfer market are being a little hypocriticial. If we want and bought 3 or so fringe players how many people would be on here complaining about a lack of ambition from MON and RL and funnily enough asking for his head ? He has bought the right type of player to fit into his team within his capabilities without breaking the bank. If we went and ''strengthened'' with frigne players this January and then made CL, which is very likely, the problem we would have is that we would be left with a huge squad [Sunderland at the start of yr], and half of them would not be up to the standard we want. I mean we already have people complaining about gettin rid of dead-wood? Some of yu ''fans'' make no sense to me!

I almost had a heart attack when I saw 4 minutes injury time for arsenal.

But I have to get to bed, it's a 7am game for me, and it's almost 2 now. utv and #2 and #3 were quality of a different variety.

I think Stoke will come looking to get 0-0. We will get plenty of chances though because their defence is a bit dodgy. An early goal for us and we end up with a 3-0 is what I am hoping for. We must take our chances though. Here is what the bookies think
Aston Villa v Stoke
2 - 5 16 - 5 8 - 1

Means a lot coming from someone who has posted such great works continously on this blog for a while now. Yur one of the few peoples comments I really enjoy reading on a regular basis. Lol I sound like I'm accepting an oscar or something...

I didn't write it to win a t-shirt lol. I think it'd cost Damo far too much to send it to Australia anyway LOL. I have jus been feeling so frustated at some of the utter rubbish written here. It makes it hard for me to comment and know people read it when the timezones are so different here but I enjoy reading the comments... most of the time.

This is THE must win for me. Tough on Wed would def take a draw gainst Man C. We also have Man U and Liverpool on the horizon which looks like 1 pnt tops for me.

So this is where we need to pick up the points. I'm glad most of team were not sitting on a plane from Moscow midweek. It doesn't guarantee a win but it sure as hell makes one easier to come by. Well done MON.

There are plenty of fans that still have doubts about us beating stoke, as well as trying to justify us throwing our chances against Moscow.
we were never going to beat or loose to Stoke based on the CSK game.
so why throw the chance away.
If we are seroius we must start winning again we have now lost that attitude by not trying
Mon will not lose the fans Today the ones that boo when we do not play ell will still boo no diference

we really need to kick start our season again today with a sound 3-0 win against stoke.
lets hope gabby puts his shooting boots on today, or he needs to be dropped for a couple of games to recharge his batteries.
i would love to see heskey, carew and harewood play together just to see what damage they would do to any defence lol

I watched arse-4-all and Diverpewl play and I gotta say they both played terribly. Arse cannot score to save them selves. Pool were outclassed :)

This is good for us Villans as if we win against Stoke we will have an 8 point cussion bettween arse and only a point behing 3rd and 4th.....

Anyone up for a party, coz I am :)

This game really is a big one. The psycological advantage of going 8 points ahead of 5th would be immense. You can already see the Arse trembling (pun intended), and with us getting futher ahead could finish them completely. However, if we fail to win or even lose, then this would be a double whammy with Villas confidense and nerves stretched and the folowing pack bouyed by the result. No, this is a must win game and if it turns out to be a convincing win, the Moscow squad i think would have been fully justified. Result Villa 3-1 =D

I am sure this will happen anyway especially after the publicity re the meals. We do not need a free meal if we loose or make a wrong/ right decision.
I do critisise things but I also greatful for the great things that are doing.

MON made a tactical decision. Get over it.
Win, lose or draw we should still support him!! That is what fans do. Even if we finish 5th or 6th we are still progressing. That is what building a club is all about. Progression. I'd rather follow a team that is built rather then bought.

Arsenal slipped up, liverpool slipped up. this is a brilliant opportunity to capitalise on their loss of points.

We could run away from arsenal and hey, we may aswell even push for that auto qualification spot!

Anything can happen in football and that is why Stoke could cause an upset and arsenal can still get 4th from us but just remeber, we have Martin O'Neill and he usually gets his team playing their best at the end of the season. If we haven't played our best yet, i cant wait to see how we play around the 33rd game mark.

Get behind the squad and singing your bleedin hearts out for them! we can do it becasue we are the Villa.

"And Behold the fruit of my genius" Said King Mononidis as Villa banished Stoke on the hallowed to turf of Villa park and thwarted Man City's samba star on blustery night wet night in the eastlands, Then as King Mononidis looked over his table he smiled a hearty smile and bellowed out THIS IS VILLLLLLLLLLLLA. And with that Villa would go on to lay siege to the upper echelons of order with sheer pace, strength, guile, cunning and alot of long artillery fire from the back. This is the story of how Villa once a quiet doldrum team rose to victory under the leadership of one man King Mononidis. Hawoooooo!

Im not getting overconfident, remember last time we played Stoke we were all on a high and expected us to beat them easily but we lost that day. I feel we need a good performance as we havent played well in a while. We should win this one convincingly but this is football so who knows. Luckily for us Delap is suspended so they wont be able to use the long throw into the box all the time, which is what caught us out last time.

Milner has played well but let's get carried away,he's hardly been "immense". I'd still like to see him beat his man before he puts a cross in, when he's pressured he tends to give up all too easily and switch it onto his other foot, which normally ends up in a poor delivery.

What a cracker from Stan...Well done the lads, not getting frustrated, just continuing to apply pressure. Something had to give, and it did, and Stan deserved to get the breakthrough.

Milner...Maybe not IMMENSE, but I'd have in my team week in week out.

Besides freshness, remember MON's prioritization put the pressure on the starters...Gave them no excuses, put the task squarely on their plates. Canny, if you ask me.

Nope, I'm sticking to IMMENSE :)

He has been everywhere, sourcing space in a half that contains eleven Stoke players, and winning the ball back any time one of them gets cheeky enough to cross the half way line.

I was not sold on Milner at first, so perhaps my enthusiasm is relative.

This is single handedly the most disappointing result Villa have ever given me. I feel so let down it's unbelievable.

Arsenal can have 4th, we don't deserve it.

Im with you there im so gutted :(

We don't deserve anything from this season - another poor result .... I wonder what these idiots in defence think at times.

If we don't win against City I think we've bottled it ..... As we won't get anything against Manure or Liverpool

I don't think the players deserve a holiday either after the City game ... They get a big enough one in the summer

fucking disgrace, as soon as stoke scored the first goal i knew we'de throw it away...what is wrong with us, i've never seen a side throw away so many games in injury time...what a great fucking opportunity blown...we'll throw away 4th place i can see it

But we've picked up more points that way than we've thrown away. We cant really grumble about the timing, we should've been clear by half time.

Horrified. How does this happen? Every time we have the opportunity to push that little bit closer we capitulate. The Villa self destruct curse seems to be back in full effect. Just watch those vultures Mark Lawrenson and Alan Green come swooping down to enjoy the feast with the rest of the haters.

Gutted. Waiting for a post to cheer me up.

we are still 6 points clear, and while disappointing there is still 11 games to go. we do need to start performing over the next few weeks but it is not the end of the season

Hellboydce, Maybe you're right and so is he. I know it's not all over but, this is such a huge disappointment after what's happened over the last week or so. What gets to me is the constant slagging of Villa by these self elevated pundits. It must be so easy to make these ridiculous statements whilst working for the BBC and being surrounded by sychophants. We are just an easy target and as we are not fashionble club the media constantly takes pot shots. Just so pissed off this evening. I pray Liverpool continue to fail in the league.........

we wont win at anfield or old trafford so cross them off we have this thing about conceading goals late on to every fans frustration, we haven't beat either of them for like 10 years

Gabby is not a striker 1 in 13 isn't good enough when fuller came on that was the turning point we messed up for 3mins and lost the game same old villa feckin useless feck a point at home again its a loss 8)
