Barry and Carson in England squad

Friday, 17 August 07, 09:39 AM · Comments (14)

Second Choice Steve has announced his England squad for the forthcoming Friendly against Germany.

Now we all know SCS would rather play Downing than a quality left midfielder like Joe Cole or Gareth Barry so now Cole is fit Barry is unlikely to get a look in there.

I imagine that with Ashley Cole available Barry might get a run out at left-back for a while.

I think SCS only picks Barry to appease the media and to be honest I think he'd be much better in central midfield with Gerrard. But that's just my (possibly biased) opinion.

We all know that Gerrard has stated in his autobiography that Barry is class and coupled with that he is probably the most technically gifted player at Villa. Which is a rarity amongst English born players.

Scott Carson has also been picked but I reckon SCS will stick with Robinson, who has conceded 4 goals in 2 games, or David James, who has conceded 3 in 2. I'd like to see Carson start so he can get a bit more practice in, particularly if O'Neill opts to go with Stuart Taylor tomorrow against Newcastle.

We've got 3 players in the under 21's this week and you never know, NRC, Gary Cahill and Ashley Young could play well enough to get a call up to the full squad later this season. But only if we qualify for Euro '08 as SCS could be sweating until the last game of the qualifying campaign and need his full strength squad.

Barry is well worth the call up and Carson has always performed well for the U21's so no surprises there!

Barry for england!
Over Joe Cole probably not
over downing, dyer, shorey, definetly so.
barry is class down at vp he is more influencial in games than people like carrick are for their clubs, i just think scs knowledge of players outside the big four spurs&boro is very narrow minded.

Agreed with both of you. It's a close call between Joe Cole and Barry. I think the only difference is Joe Cole can produce match winning goals. Barry has done it but not to the level Cole does it.

at least barry would be able to score a penalty unlike the rest of the england squad

Don't think Joe Cole is better on the left than Barry, personally, square peg and round hole spring to mind. Barry could be good in the centre but think he stands more chance of holding down a regular place on the left which is a weak area for England.

Props to Gerrard for his autobiography comments on Barry though, glad he takes notice in quality players and opposition! It sounds wrong but i hope all our naturally left sided midfielders (excluding Barry) get injured, there's no way Barry will miss out then! although, knowing Macca we'd end up with Jamie Carragher at Left winger, or play a 4-3-3 since he underrates Barry.

I'd really like to see NRC and Osbourne play in centre midfield together. They both work extremely well and together they would turn a lot of heads. I want to see Luke and Gabby on either side of Carew, like the begining of last year, except no JPA.

For tomorrow: 4-3-3
Carson,
Bouma, Mellberg, Laursen, Gardner
Young, NRC, Barry
Gabby, Carew, Moore

unrelated but did anyone notice that we could feild a team with the players that have left this summer.

Sorrenson?

Dellaney Hughes Ridgewell Samuel

Hendrie McCann Djemba-djemba Davis

Angel Sutton

Ive watched games with worse sides out than this, even still its quite exciting that there has been that much change and who could be coming in because lets face it ( rumours aside )it will happen.

The reason Barry is over-looked for a starting position is down to not playing in euorpe with villa ,if he had been playing in europe on a regular basis he would be in every squad .I feel if we dont get into europe soon he maywell be off.

Yeah, well done Barry and a lukewarm well done to Carson (I'll fully congratulate him if and when he becomes a Villa player).
Now to more pressing matters: -13 AND STILL NOT A RUMOR FROM VILLA PARK. YESTERDAY TALKSPORT SPECULATED THAT AVFC HAVE NO MONEY AND O'NEILL HAS TO RAISE CASH BY SELLING. GET IT RIGHT MON AND RL, YOU'RE BEGINNING TO MAKE ME LOOSE SLEEP. Sorry about the caps but I'm pissed off..bet good old Doug finds this extremely funny, and who can blame him...
