Barry out and Heskey in? Plus some others

Monday, 01 September 08, 02:35 PM · Comments (305)

Okay, the title is slightly misleading as I'm taking a cheeky swipe at Man City. They've been bought by mega-rich Arabs who have already made bids for Berbatov, Villa, Robinho and Gomez.

But how bizarre would it be if they bid for Barry? They will happily pay our £18m if they wanted him but whether he would go is a different question. I doubt it, but money talks and it would tell us more about Barry than this whole saga has before.

Anyhow, from the absurd fiction to the, well, not quite as absurd but still absurd fiction: Emily Heskey from Wigan to Villa.

It's an obvious link - MON / Leicester / Heskey / striker / big - but at 30 years old and with a goal ratio of 1 in 5 for Wigan is there much truth?

Well, he'd be available for cheaper than other strikers and MON knows him pretty well. Also with the service we could provide that 1 in 5 could easily become 1 in 4 or 1 in 3.5 - maybe more.

To be honest I'm not so keen myself but then with only Marlene as a backup to Gabby and Carew I'm thinking that it isn't such a bad idea after all. I may be - and probably am - wrong.

I've also heard rumours of us fighting Newcastle for Xisco from Deportivo and us preparing a bid for little Mickey Owen. Why does everything recently involve Newcastle?

Valencia's Nikola Zigic - a target according to Sky Sports News (he is big after all) - looks set to join Racing Santander on loan, although that isn't confirmed just yet.

We'll be here until the window shuts at midnight (well, I'm hoping Damian is!) so we'll keep you up-to-date with whatever rubbish/news goes on as the deadline approaches.

Right, where's I'm off for a big up of coffee...

I didn't actually make any of that up, although the Barry thing doesn't (as far as I know) have any truth behind it.

We're just trying to round up what is going on and keeping you informed as the window draws to a close. A depressingly boring close no doubt...

you should publish an article saying "Aston villa Land Davidf Villa on a 4 years deal" then do one of them sly quotes....

Sources close to Martin oniel confirmed that he has splashed the Money on David Villa because he realises that being a BBC pundit doesnt help the fact that he didnt bother buying a striker.

Martin also catagorically denies any truth in the fact that he would insult his own Playrs and fans by buying anyone like Barton, Heskey, Doyle and that he is much more knowledgable than to treat people with that much stupidity......

THEN WE CAN SEE THAT ON NEWSNOW AND EVERYWHERE AND SEE WHAT HIS EXCUSE IS THEN FOR SIGNING HESKEY.... LMAO

Am I the only one getting a little fed up at the regular digs at Gareth Barry on this blog, casting aspersions on both his character and his ability? As great an institution as Aston Villa FC is, we are exceptionally lucky that he is still a Villa player. It is only because the so-called top managers in this country failed to recognise that he has always been an outstanding player that he is still here. Would anyone have criticised him if Ferguson had signed him rather than Carrick a couple of seasons back? Or if anyone else had come in for him in the past five years with a bid that may, to the uneducated eye, have looked excessive, but would have in fact been a bargain price? To be brutally honest, even as recently as three seasons ago, when any hope that we would do anything in the next twenty years was ridiculous, I would have been happy to have seen him go and play for a big club with a great manager and fulfill his potential. I always felt that playing in Spain would have suited him perfectly, because his intelligence and technique would have been appreciated and cultivated. As it is, we should all thank our lucky stars that a player, and man, of his class is on our books. And before anyone mentions the NOTW, that unfortunate incident - yes, unfortunate - does not in any way compromise his character. And besides, MoN and Lerner have forgiven him (implying some kind of apology), and they were the sole targets of the NOTW interview. Anyone who hasn't done so already (and as far as I can see, they are thankfully a minority) should get behind Barry, obviously the club as a whole, and see what we can do this season. Who knows, we may even get to keep a player I wouldn't swap for any other, at Villa Park for the rest of his career.

As for the transfer window, let's hope we can get a quality striker in tonight, but if it doesn't happen today, it will in the future. That's what Villa want, and that's what we can get.

Luke,

Of course we are each entitled to our opinions, and that is a good thing - though it would be even better if every Villa fan was of the opinion that Barry is class! ;) I was merely taking the opportunity this blog gives me of expressing mine.

For the record, I do understand that, to some extent at least, we all from time to time exaggerate for effect. Inevitably there is some suspicion that Barry might be 'in it for the money', and my theory is that many would rather suspect this than the alternative, namely that Barry doesn't love the Villa like we supporters do. Unfortunately, Barry wasn't brought up a Villan, and so what he feels about the club won't be the same as us. But nevertheless, many of his teammates have said that Barry loves the club, and though that love isn't of the same kind as ours, I believe it's still genuine, and that when he hangs up his boots, Villa will be his club.

Moving to Liverpool would have been misguided, but not malicious. Indeed, if Villa and Liverpool weren't so close, then no malice would be inferred on any of our parts.

We can all have our opinions about various player's ability. For example, I'm disappointed that Gerrard didn't play yesterday, as I think if he had, we may well have won what would have been a more open game, as Gerrard plays without much discipline, isn't an intelligent or tactically astute player, and isn't posessed of a great deal of flair. Although he is a great athlete...

But a man's character is a different thing. Over the years, as Villa fans we have all seen the way he conducts himself on the pitch, with decency and respect, and we all know that he is a great professional. And the NOTW incident aside, his media profile is impeccable - in the sense that it's virtually non-existent. He's a fundamentally good guy, and that kind of character doesn't change.

Anyway, thanks to yourself, Damian and the rest for AVFC Blog. Keep up the good work and all that.

I fear this is the only way the league can be saved. In the not too distant future, the league will be decided by whichever billionaire can by the most players in the transfer window.

When a club instantly gets transformed like this overnight - how is it a fair competition? Yes I know our club was bought out but we would never have been paying £32m for Robinho.

Salary cap is the only saviour!

DENIAL: I'm too young to die. I'm not ready to die (is anyone ever really ready?). You don't just get up some morning and say, "Well, I'm ready to die today". Even when a physician informs one that nothing can be done for them the feeling that some mistake must have been made is in the dying person's mind. The prediction from ones physician of imminent death can do several things. It can give you time to prepare, take care of business, close doors, make amends. The shock begins to ebb as you come to grips with approaching death.

ANGER: Suddenly you are not in control of your life, or death. You have no choice......you are going to die. You have always known this, no one has come out and stated it as a fact before. It makes you angry, you feel so helpless especially at first, then guilt climbs upon your back Anger is directed at everyone and no one in particular. It is a sense of loss of control which is likely not a new feeling if you have endured a long illness. It is normal. Anger is in its own, a sense of strength. It can also be debilitating.

BARGAINING: You are willing now to compromise. No use denying it, anger comes and goes so perhaps you can make a deal with God! You are willing to promise to do or not to do specific things if only you can be given more time. It can be based on an upcoming event that is important to you. You can be suffering from insecurities regarding a member of your family or a loved one who you feel is yet dependent on you. There can be a rift that has never been eliminated that needs to be further addressed. You are not free to go until these reasons can be alleviated once and for all. You are hoping yet and eager to deal!

Top_SIX_Villa
195. Top_SIX_Villa Wrote: | 23.53BST | Sep 1, 2008

DEPRESSION: This is such a normal part of the process of preparing to die. You are already depressed about your incapability's in dealing with responsibility, projects and the situation of every day life. Symptoms of terminal illness are impossible to ignore. You are fully aware that death is inevitable. Aware, angry and filled with sorrow and here again the culprit of guilt sneaks in as you mourn for yourself and the pain that this is causing you family and loved ones. Another totally NORMAL phase.

ACCEPTANCE: This comes after you work though the numerous conflicts and feelings that death brings. You can succumb to the inevitable as you become more tired and weakness hangs on. You become less emotional, calmness arrives and banishes fear along with joy or sadness. You realize the battle is almost over and now it's really alright for you to die.

They hijacked him in a last minute bid, infront of Stoke who have been interested. Ola Toivonen have played in the same clubs as the Swedish internationals Olof Mellberg (Degerfors)and Markus Allback (Örgryte)who probably have told him good things about the club. I'm a bit gutted to be honest.

I'm happy that we've managed to bring in some decent players this summer and our outlay has been good compared to previous years. But... we knew that they were huge gaping holes in our side and I'm not sure that any of us would have picked the players that we have signed to fill them.

Don't get me wrong, i think that we've got a stronger side than we had last year, but we punched above our weight to finish 6th and we'll have to do even better this year.

I think we all would have loved at least one star signing, i was happy when we bought Sidwell, Milner and Cueller but none of them get me particularly excited.

The reason Tottenham and Man City have signed star players is an indication of their ambition. Even their high profile failed bids would have helped attract other star players.

I like MON's policy of young and hungry English speaking players but I wish we could mix it up a bit and add a bit of flair and excitement as well.

Our squad numbers aren't that dissimilar from last year so I hope we are equally as lucky with injuries this year. Let's also pray that it takes a while for the Spurs, Man City and Pompey teams to gel as well as Everton not reaching the hights they did last year.

Top 4 looks a long way off, but I'm looking forward to seeing starts from Milner, Sidwell & Cueller.

Good luck to the boys, this is the squad until january at least. I hope they do us proud.

x

Now suddenly everyone is happy - how all your expectations dropped hey! well we are going to have to rely on luck again now u irish pric! west ham had 12 players out last year and came 10th - we certainly wouldnt!! damian mate are u happy - i know you said u expected an increase of 8-10 players at the start of the window.
we have lost ground on liverpool, pompey, mna city and spurs if they get it together. look at the players we have signed - shorey and luke young are full backs boro or fulham look to sign - they are not good enough for a team looking to challenge the top 4. one of our signings is a goalie who wont be involved for a year or so. milner is very average. sidwell and cuellar we will wait and see but to be honest i dont see oneil starting them till after xmas cause he doesnt have the bottle to change things.
football has moved on and mon hasnt since his time at leicester. buying home grown players wont now and wont ever get us to the top 4 and wont even consolidate us in the top 6.
we over achieved last year and will have to again and will have to be lucky with injuries and suspension just to finish top 8. i dont think we will qualify for europe this year after the summer we have had- 8th at best and if that happens young and barry will be gone next summer!

At last someone that can smell the bacon. MON has let us all down. He has constantly lied about the fact that he would address the small (I SAY PATHETIC) squad size. How can anyone think that 6 players out & 7 in is addressing the squad size? last season we had 4 strikers this season we have 3 + a youth player. How is that progress?? He buys 2 third rate full backs & keeps dragging them off obviously because he doesn't rate them. He thinks Coker is better at right back than young (well if he doesn't why did he put him there on Sunday)???. If we get the full backs injured we are in the poo. I can't wait the hear his excuses. They will quote 48m spent but like i say that has not addressed our pathetic squad size it's still pathetic & the quality in my opinion has also not changed much. Anyone who seriously thinks either Man City, or Spurs will finish above us at the end of the season is a fool. Pompey may do, but that's only because they have an astute manager and have built a balanced team (unlike the other two).

Face facts - we have a far better team this season than last. We have a far better squad than last season. What more do you want? Seriously come on. Tell me what would make you happy? We WILL finish top 6 this season of that I am 100% sure. Is that not good enough now all of a sudden? If ain't then, please go and watch Man City - they seem to be flavour of the month all of a sudden.

Recoba? Ha ha ha. Past his best.
Crespo. Ha ha ha. Way, way, way past his best.

fair weather fan??? i've had a season ticketsince 1986 how long you had one??? I would have got angry and aggressive about that comment in the past but i'm growing up. Mate we have 3 experianced strikers Carew, Harewood & Gabby. Last season we had 4 because we had Luke Moore. Where are these 6 strikers?? GET YOU'RE FACTS RIGHT.

Answer the question how long have you had a seasdon ticket (Fair Weather fan)???? Salifu is a midfield player and has always been one never ever has he been a striker, Ashley Young is a winger not a striker. Do you understand football?? Do you actually know what you are talking about?? Have you ever had a season ticket or even go to the games??? I think we all know the answer to the above questions is NO. Unless you're seat faces Aston Park. =D OK

Mate i went to my 1st game in 1972 aged 4. I asked how long you have had a season ticket you still haven'yt answered that question. Delfounso is a youth team player & has only been added to the squad to make it look biggger that it actually is, if you need to check the official web site to know where a player plays you can't know much about the squad & defenatley don't go to the games. Answer the question how long you had a season ticket???

Must say I'm a little pis*ed off that Villa didn't get another stiker in. Looking at our team - Carew and Gabby when on form are fantastic, the young lad Delfonso looks promising but the other option of Harewood - Come on this guy isn't a top league player. So I think we're real short now up front and if we get an injury or two we've got a problem. Apart from that we've done well in the window.

I wasn't going to log on this morning cos I thought there would be a lot of bitching going on about MON. And guess what I was right!! I think MON has made some good (not great just good)additions to the squad which looks greatly improved over last years. Personally I agree with MON's policy of gathering a nucleus of young English Talent around which we can build a really strong squad which will see us right for many years.

I can remember a certain Mr Ferguson being told that he would never win anything with a team full of kids!

Well, your an argumentative lot aren't you? ;)

My opinion of this striker thing, for what it's worth? I would actually use Sally as a striker (but MON must play him regularly). He will be a predatory striker and I'm sure he'll do just as godd a job, if not better than Gabby. May just get Gabby to get his head out of the clouds, dreaming of his next shag! :|

When are people going to face up to the fact that MON is completely incompetent in the transfer market. I can't beieve how easily bought some Villa fnas are with the likes of Young, Shorey and even Milner. Young and Shorey are bottom half of the table players and no more. Huge glaring flaws in this team have again gone unsolved. No real playmaker or another sriker that actually has some techincal ability unlike that Donkey Abgolahor. We will never get top 4 wih this man in chrge of bringing players into the club. Football has moved on but MON has not. And by the way to all the fans that kept harping on about Villa not being able to attract top players just take one look at City. Money Talks in the game today but we hae shown our ambition by buying average players. Best of luck to Man City.At least they really have a go instead of just pretending to.

I don't actually think its just gabby's work rate we should be questioning. He really is just a speed merchant. His touch is brutal and e is very poor at holding the ball up IMO. We could get away with that if we the type ofteam that played through the midfield but we are more of a long ball team that looks t hit the front 2 straight from the back line. To do this you need a player who can actually control it and then hold it up. Caew cando this but Gabby filals mre often then not and the ball just keeps on coming back at us. Even Merson said fter is hat trick thathe doesn't believe Gabby is as good as people think. This is why i find it so infuriating that MON has not broght in another striker. I would even have taen Heskey at this stage.

Its not about how much we can afford for a player its about how much we are willing to pay that player for his wage. We have a wage structure at Villa and MON and RL are right to stick to that. Anyway, I'm sure Robinhio thinks he's been sold to Man U not Man C as why would he choose Man C over Chelsea, doesn't make sense to me! What a shock he will have when he returns from the international break!! :D

Do you not se how stupid a wage structure is in this day and age. So here we are trying to make the ground back on the top 4 amd we put this extra hinderince in to make the job even harder. Villa need to get with the time.

Please don't liken us to Man City. We all know that is going to end in tears within 24 months.

Can I just say that there is absolutely no way that Robinho can be considered a top talent. Man City have been ripped off big style. This guy was bought without having undergone a medical, and off the back of 2 disappointing years at Real Madrid.

I despair of the lack of patience on this site. I just do. Thank God that the vast majority of fans at Villa Park have more sense and can see the bigger picture than the internet warriors on here. These sort of fans are the ones who were moaning and slating Ashley Young less than 12 months ago (ie clueless)
