This looks like it finally may happen after it was confirmed that Charlton striker Darren Bent is joining the North London team for £16.5mn.
Spurs have Defoe, Berbatov, Keane, Mido and now Bent that play up front and you've got to agree that it is going to be difficult to keep all those players happy. It looks like Mido will also be leaving but the Defoe signals are stronger than ever.
This Defoe rumour has been doing the rounds since last summer, pretty much ever since Martin O'Neill arrived at Aston Villa and while rumours are just rumours, there is something behind this one.
The only thing that concerns me is that this rumour has always, sort of focused around Defoe not being happy about sitting on the bench and not getting enough regular starts.
Now, while I like players to want to be playing week in week out, I made it clear yesterday with Davis, that the team should come first and that players should put that before throwing toys out of the pram.
It should be an honour for him to play for Spurs and he should be grateful for every opportunity he gets but he shouldn't think that if he's coming to Villa he will be guaranteed a starting place every week. Sure he's an excellent striker, but that's not to say we don't have quality at Villa or that certain games may warrant him not starting.
Anyway, this rumour looks like it's gathering pace and I for one, like I have been since day one, would love to see it happen.
Rumour likelihood: I'm going to the bookies now and putting a tenner on it.

Defoe's staying lads, Mido is going. Jol wont sell both and leave us with 3 strikers again and he wont want to buy another striker. He's said all along he likes to have 4 strikers as do every DECENT club, and we're now in that category!!!!
Defoe would be a good signing for villa. But if he starts moaning, he could disrupt the whole squad. but its a very very good potential risk to take on a player of defoe calibre.
Doubt we will sign Defore as it seems Man U and Liverpool are after him aswell
Defoe won't leave Spurs, he likes his London lifestyle, and personaly I wouldn't want him at Villa. We don't need overated primadonna's who get upset if the grass is too wet etc...we don't need another Baros. We need players who want to be part of a success story.
Its lazy to link Defoe to Villa. Defoe will stop at Spurs and see out his contract. This I know. Villa have had talks with Nugent, but he wants to join Everton.
Well Yiddo you said it, your a decent club... Nothing special and you have just been ripped off by Charlton. Defoe will leave because none are intersted Mido.!
Defoe would be a good signing for the villa... but if bent would not go to a small club like wet spam.. what makes anyone think JD would leave Spurs for villa who look like doing nothing in the next few years?
I think defoe would be a quality addition to our squad, hed be a great partner for carew but we just hafta be carefull not to over do it in the striker department, especially if we get nugent aswell. might not be able to keep them all happy.
We are once again being linked with Jermain Defoe and to be honest i really would not want him at the club , we have enough young quick strikers who want to be at the club and play for the badge. Why would we want defoe who will throw his rattle out the pram when something goes against him. As for spurs Darren Bent for 16.5 million what a joke you have been mugged. I am sick of spurs fan's claiming their a big/decent club , You will only be seen as a decent club when you have won the European cup.
Defoe's pace is phenominal, his finishing not so. However, the pace we have up front with Ashley, Gabby, Moore and to a lesser degree Carew may just get us into Europe especially with Defoe added. What Yiddo fails to recognise is Villa have just as much chance of getting continental football as Spurs have, as we have the best manager in Britain who has been there both as player and manager. The only problem with a move for Defoe is why would Spurs sell? Four strikers is what they'll need. I reckon we'll only move for him if Moore goes.
I think it will be Mido to leave Spurs. Keane went through the bench treatment but unlike Defoe he improved his short passing and got his starting place back. I think he was made vice captain. I would not expect MON to buy Defoe.
Well i must say £16.5 million for bent...? Spurs are starting a collection of overpriced, overated players. Barbetov is the exception, Thought you would have learnt after the rebrov incident...
Go get Defoe!!! He is class and team him up with Carew would, fingers crossed, be lethal. Young and Gabby flying down the wings, oh my god it may just be exciting footy!!! ;D
I'd rather Keane and I don't think Defoe will come to Villa. He's far too London bling bling to want to come to Birmingham too. I'm also not convinced Defoe would see our potential, especially with Spurs in the position they are.
I think Defoe has been sounded out, I would be very surprised if he didnt sign, but then again, im surprised that we havent signed anyone at all!!
Luke Moore is a far better prospect than Defoe, he loves Villa and wants to fight and earn his place. Moore is quick, strong and has a very good eye for goal, and has scored his fair share in big games at Chelsea etc...so now he has recovered from an injury that he was carrying for 3 years, watch him light up the prem next season, Hopefuly for Villa.
If he comes, he comes and will be welcome. IF he doesn't then it's not the hugest loss and we certainly could find as good or better elsewhere. Primadonna sounds about right.
defoe would be a brilliant signing but however man utd and liverpool are chasing him aswell but if he wants to think about his england career he would have to leave spurs and join villa who will be fighting for 6 maybe 5 place next season with a few quality signings. :) cummon u villa boys holte ender
Luke moore is no where near the player Defoe is. Defoe given a full season in the starting line up will score you 15 - 20 premiership goals. Moore most definitly wouldnt get close to this. Defoe holds the ball up better not that he is that type of player and has more skill. I would certainly welcome him, but his attitude would concern me if he was left out or MON rotated the team which if we are going to challenge will happen.
I think Defoe would be a good addition to the Villa squad. If we want to be challanging for 5-6 place and also the 2 cups we need a decent squad. That mix needs to be experienced internationals, experienced Premiership players and some really talented young players. Defoe fits into the experienced Prem player mould and given a good run in the side would score close on 20 goals a season for Villa.
I think MON has probably got many deals done and ready to release to the public when the teams that he is buying from have found there replacements. I think Bent will do well at Spurs but I think Defoe will do better at Villa.
MON originally said he wanted a settled squad for when they return to pre-season training (Wednesday next week). That isn't going to happen as he has extended the holiday period for most of the players by 10 days. Expect to see the action starting towards the back end of next week. Reo-Coker in mid next week, Defoe the end and Snijnder soon please.
Anyone else noticed we don't have a right back at the club anymore? Delaney is out of contract as of Sunday and Hughes has gone (good bit or business to get our money back).
I don't think MON would have let anyone go he hasn't got agreements in place as replacements. He can't afford to start the season with a smaller squad than last year
Luke Moore is fresh out of our youth ranks, and hasn't had the run he needs at the moment, Defoe has been around for a while. Luke will become a fantastic player guarranteed. If Defoe is that good and can score 20 goals a season, why hasn't he done it for Spurs consistantly? and why have they bought Bent ? Ricardo Oliveira is up for grabs from AC Milan at £7m, he sounds a much better bet. You will find Boruc, Koumas and Reo-Coker are defo's then Lahm or Young, Sneijder or Simplicio or De Jong,
Yes defoe would be a great singing as we need a 20 goals a season striker but still i want to see more of luke moore because he was scoreing goals from all over the place in his reserve matches last season midfeild needs sorting aswell buld around petrov he is going to be on fire this season
