Chris Sutton leaves Aston Villa to retire

Thursday, 05 July 07, 04:37 AM · Comments (9)

A few news sources have reported that Chris Sutton's agent, Tony McGill, has announced that he has been forced to retire by the eye injury sustained against Man Utd just before Christmas last year.

I was a big fan of Sutton and thought he added a different dimension to our attack. I'm not sure what Birmingham fans think as he spent most of his time their on the treatment table, but up until the injury he was class for us.

Sutton began his career at Norwich before moving to Blackburn where his renowned partnership with Alan Shearer brought the first league title to Ewood Park since 1914.

Despite commanding over £15m in transfer fees he never quite met the same level of success as the title winning season and had a pretty dire spell at Chelsea before moving to Celtic.

Sutton did well at Celtic but moved to Birmingham where he only managed 10 games and 1 goal. He then did the right thing and moved to the Midlands big time at Villa Park. Despite the solitary goal he did help us score a few times and linked up well with the midfield and attack.

I'd like to give Chris a big thanks for his short spell at Villa.

hmm was never sure about Sutton but its a shame he has to end his career prematurely, that header he scored for us was class and its a shame we couldnt have seen more of him.

Good luck Mr Sutton!

Unfortunate that he has to retire, i wasn't suprised that we hit a slump immediately after his injury and we also lost cover for striker, where we were running thin.
Good luck in future Chris.
