Coming down to the wire: Dean Ashton rumour gathers pace

Monday, 01 September 08, 06:48 AM · Comments (172)

One thing you've got to say about football rumours is that eventually, when enough people are publishing the same one, it sort of adds credibility to it, which does make it more believable.

The two developing today are the Doyle one and the Dean Ashton one. I'd really quite like Dean Ashton and would see him walking straight into the team and giving a huge kick up the backside to Gabby, but we're going to have to wait and see.

Now, the West Ham fans are going to remind us that he singed a contract earlier this year and that he will only leave West Ham for a top four team, but I quite fancy there is something behind this one as the talk is that Martin O'Neill has upped his initial bid of £12mn. to £15mn.

Now, if it happens, I'll be very happy, but the way Martin O'Neill is talking suggests that there is every possibility we've seen all we're going to see, but I'm still hopeful, we have to be don't we?

Whether anything materialises or not I wouldn’t be sure. We have some calls in that we made last week. Some clubs said they would get back to us today. The timing is tight. If things don’t materialise - and they are probably more likely not to - we will not be disappointed. We could just do with getting one or two people in.
Martin O'Neill

While it doesn't sound too positive from the manager we should also look to the positives; we've got players in every position now and while we may not have the cover we'd all like having a right sided attack this season can only be good news.

Eleven hours to go, we'll update you as and when we sign anyone.

Damian,
I agree wholeheartedly! Gaby looked so lazy, he didn't seem to read the game or want to put any energy in yesterday.
Yesterday only John Carew, Mon and Ian Taylor bothered to acknowlege the Fans as they entered the Stadium. The fans were terrific with their vocal support throughout -all we ask is for some effort.
rant over :D Ashton over Doyle for me

Seriously, if West Ham are asking for £15m, which I'm extremely dubious they are, then just pay it. Perhaps they need to balance the books like Portsmouth, but cutting Freddy Ljungberg and selling your star striker are two completely different cost-cutting methods.

would luv to see ashton, but i really doubt west ham would be willing to let him go...especially since their manager is under so much pressure from the fans, therefore if he let him go then he is taking a huge risk.

doyle on the other hand is a premiership player therefore i am sure the player himself will be pushing for the move. and i agree this will hopefully give gabby that competition he needs to make him a better player. i do hope gabby doesnt loose his form and his desire to play as previous accademy players did (stefan and luke moore).

It's more likely to Doyle than Ashton. Doyle isn't the player we need at the moment but you never know how he may be transformed at Villa Park.

More and more teams are going to come to Villa and see that we can score goals but we can also let them in, so the way to play us is to sit in front of their own goal and try and nick one.

So at least with another striker it gives us another option:

The speedy one: Gabby and Carew
The crafty one: Carew and Doyle
The battering rams: Carew and Marlon
The headless chickens: Gabby and Marlon.

This season is going to be harder because of how we achieved last year. Another body is essential for us to try and push on. However, I still think we are making strides forward but it is going to get harder, especially as Man City have now been bought by Croesus himself.

Never mind a kick up Gabby's backside, I think Carew needs one too. He was good yesterday but if he got some consistency to his shooting, he would be rightly viewed as one of the best in Europe.

I reckon West Ham do have a price that they'd sell for and I reckon we should give it them, as our lack of striking qualitiy is the only difference between us and the big three. And Liverpool.

onto trnansfers. ashton would be awesome cuz he would give us something different. He is more of a linkup striker ala bergkamp, sherringham etc. He would give us another dimension.

like damian says, when rumours just keep on appearing it tends to have some truth in them. this is positive news but scary to think that the doyle one could be true. I think ashton will sign if west ham sign a replacement other than that no chance.

Seems far too late to sign Ashton now. Although we can't be sure, I don't think from the signs so far that we'd made an official bid before today. Doubt very much we'd be able to turn it around that quickly.

Ashton would be a great signing, we need a clever player up front who can link plays and who can pass properly. Carew and Aggy cant play a good decisive ball between dem. Villa were terrible yesterday, reo-coker was by far our best player and did far more dan young did on the opposite wing!Couldnt beat d pool without der 2 best best players playing..Liverpool are failrly average without Gerrard and Torres. Yes as far as I know this is just an insurance policy for the clubs although when signing a player like Ashton I would have to advise against it.

I'd be disappointed as well. A 37 year old is hardly the kind of player that's going to help us finish 4th, legend or not. He just won't have the legs to keep up with any Premiership defence. Fair enough if he's going to play backup, but neither us or him want that.

Antonio Valencia would be a great signing but he's a starter, and i don't think Martin O'Neill waited 2 years and paid 12m pounds for Milner to put him on the bench.

A striker, a winger/playmaker(someone to link the mid-field and the strikers) and a defensive utility player is the minimum we need IMO.But i can't see us bringing in 3 players today.

That Ebanks Blake storey sounds like rubbish.I dont think MON has the time to be going for dinner with footballers on deadline day.

Watching SSN and seeing Villa's hopes of a top 6 finish slip away! As Man City are bidding £30mil for DB, Spurs are bringing in £13mil strikers, even the toon are spending while we are doing nowt! We'll be lucky to make top 10 at this rate. Did yesterdays game teach us nothing? We didn't look like scoring. If we were still playing now we'd be no closer to hitting the net! We have a few hours to bring in some quality. If is doesn't happen I fear it'll be a return to mid-table.

I would like Ebanks-Blake, it's a bit unusual and a bit of a gamble, but MON likes a decent deadline day gamble (Salifou, Maloney)!!

YES... Another bid has gone in for De La Red!! The first bid from the other week was turned down.

A second bid was made early last week and Villa were told that a decision would be made today depending on other transfers.

No idea who Madrid are waiting to bring in to replace him, but sounds like this one might have life in it yet.

Aston Villa are one of TWO top ten clubs that have moved to sign disgraced Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.

Villa and and another as yet unnamed club have moved to take the 25-year-old player, who faces a 12-month FA ban at a hearing on Friday for his part in an assault on ex-Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill is believed to see Barton as a long-tewrm replacement for Gareth Barry whose agent confirmed recently that the England star remains a Villa player "for now".

For those of you that remember the the summer window on this blog last year - i was right on the two occasions i wrote then... Hokey-Cokey and Davies - both the day before they were done.

I know there's a lot flying around today - but all i can say is trust me and we'll find out later or tomorrow if we were successful. I repeat... Although not by any means done deals, both Ashton and De La Red are still live.
