Okay, it's a rumour but one that has come in from a couple of people and while I have tried not to get involved with this it looks like it might be happening.
Rumours are rife that the player has had his medical and there will be an announcement from the club this afternoon. How true that is remains to be seen.
It's all rumour at the moment as the club are not saying anything on the reported bid accepted by Hearts for keeper Craig Gordon and who knows, we might even see a new right back this afternoon too. If the rumours turn out to be true that is.
Since Ridgewell defected we need another defender but if we are to be paying the rumoured £8mn. I'm a little surprised and can only assume it comes down to desire and the type of player Martin O'Neill wants to bring in.
Ridgewell has more Premier League experience than Davies and for me matches him as a player, so it has to be something that Martin O'Neill is specifically looking for.
It also means that our link to Bruno Alves is dead as you can't imagine Martin O'Neill will be bringing in another central defender.

right backs please, yeah another central defender is needed but how much for this kid.
Go for Hangeland !!!
Excelent player !
Dont think Ridgewell is as good as Davis, just get him in MON!! And please Gordon too...:)
I think we will see rosenior coming in soon.... which i think will be a very useful addition to the squad
I think Davies is the kind of player we should be signing, i suggested him as early as April, now we need Gordon and Bosingwa!
I've just found out that Bosingwa wasn;t given a squad number by Porto.
Gordon is a must at all costs, Davis is a great defender & will only get better & Rosenior is a good player so they al get my thumbs up. We still need another right back & a left back if we get these 3 though.
according to the fc porto website he has a squad number
but that is the english site ... i cant find the squad list on the main site ...
I agree that it is near on impossible to seperate Ridgewell and Davies on a like for like comparison; they dont even play in the same division although Davies was ahead of Ridgewell the last time both players were called up fo the U'21s.
Only difference is that key figures witin the game "who see things that we clearly dont" rate one at x 4 the value of the other.
The one thing about Ridgewell that always prevented him really progressing was the fact that he would at some point in virtually every game have a lapse in concentration; many times costing us points. Maybe it is something as small as this which seperate the two players?
Anyone know the Mark Delaney situation re the squad numbers? Was he omitted because he's on his way out or was this just a typo?
Great if we can sign him but I bet he aint at our ground.
for once some transfer news to get excited about. its goin to be an interesting day lol ;D
I read in a paper that Delaney was retiring because of injury.
davies and gordon are both good young players who can only get better and better and as M.O.N LOVES TO SAY all the time value for money
I think its Gordon
Its going to be a busy and exciting week........at last !!
Have to think of the future, i cant really see ridgewell improving at the rate that davies would. there may not be much between them now but in three years time there will be a gulf...thats what MON is doing, buying for the future. am i the only one whos noticed that everyone but sutton who has came in is under the age of 26 ( please correct me if im wrong ) ;D
VILLAMADMAN - Petrov and Carew...
Petrov and Harewood are both 28 i think
This is the first time i've ever left a comment on any of the villa message board but a few of the messages that have been left on this subject have really annoyed me.
"Ridgewell and Davis impossible to seperate" ????
Ridgewell allways looked dodgey where as Davis always looks solid.
Davis has a lot more pace.
Ridgeell has clubs like the scum in for him.
Davis has clubs like Arsenal, Tottenham and the mighty Villa after him.
I'm glad MON is running things and not you lot.
;) ;) ;)
i think curtis davies is far better than ridgewell i have been down villa park and he is not there he might be at bodymoor nothing has been announced on skysports or on the bbc website so nothing official as yet hopefully we will sign craig gordon and curtis davies soon and show them both off in a press conference
When is this apprent press conference going to happen? I heard 4pm today?
Im not so sure myself i hope we wrap up at least one signing by today.
I think we need about 4/5 more good players and we should make Europe.
i could be wrong but i'd doubt there was a press conference today as it would have been mentioned on the os by now
maybe some news tomorrow or wednesday ...
MON really doing well as manager for Villa... I'm very glad that his eyes are on the young ones and bringing in players for the future rather like Man U. or Chelsea does. So keep up the good work MON! Looking forward to the season starts... :)
Just seen barry in solihull over heard him talking on the phone saying hangeland will be in birmingham by wednesday afternoon. does anyone know if we had a press conference today at 4pm?
Calm down everyone - for all the talk and rumour NOBODY has signed on the dotted line yet!
stevenrobotham
I can see that you are clearly annoyed by people daring to suggest that Ridewell and Davies are difficult to seperate as like for like players.
The reason for the rationale within the thought process is simple - Ridgewell has played close to 100 premiership games, Curtis is unproven at this level - therefore a risk and a very large risk at 8m - however this is definately a positive move for the club.
You clearly have seen alot of both players live to be able to draw your conclusions on suitability.
To the post below. Hangeland almost signed last week but at the medical something went wrong?. So O'Neills switched to Davies.
Daventry,
I sensed a patronizing tone in that message. I might be new on the board bt i know my football mate.
So Mr Ridgewell has played nearly 100 games but for how many of those games was he picked out of choice? Laursen injured for nearly 2 seasons and Cahill also has suffered with injury. both of these would have been ahead of Ridgwell had they been fit. This would have left Ridgewell with far less Prem appearances.
Do you not agree?
My point is that just because hes played x amount of games does not mean he is of the required standard.
You wills see what I mean about Curtis if he signs.
Daventry im not on here to have a pop and maybe i shouldnt have posted in such hast but I do know my footie.
UTV!! ;D
just heard on sky sports news that gordons's switch to sunderland is to be concluded within the next few hours so looks like another one has slipped through the net! why would anyone want to fight relegation than push for europe? it beats me maybe he wants to be closer to scotland for the family?
just seen on sky sports news that CG is going to complete move to sunderland in the next few hours! i can't understand any young player wanting to join them over us given the choice!!!
Juast seen the same reports on Sky about Gordon.... But as Wigan learned with Harewood until the signature is on that all important piece of paper its never a done deal..... We will just have to wait until we see him in a jersey before we know whats happening..... And just in relation to MON and transfers when he was celtic manager he was the same nothing was heard until the final minute and most of his activity happened towards the end of the transfer window.
Can anyone clear up the following for me please.
I first read that Gordon was going to spend a little time at Sunderland before coming down to do the same at Villa. I wondered if the source here was credible or not because all of a sudden he's near to signing for Sunderland. Were we ever in for him ?
jasp said that Hangeland failed a medical last week and won't be coming. Again mate, where did this come from because even our Nordic friends on this site haven't said anything about that to my knowledge.
Also, did anyone find out if Bosingwa got his squad number at Porto or not? I asked the other day if anyone noticed if he was there or not at the Rotterdam tournament but nobody commented.
Any more comments from the people who saw Davies at Villa Park this morning ?
Please don't think i'm being negative lads but don't know what to believe at the moment. I'm dead excited that it's all started to roll again with the rumour and transfer excitement ! Hopefully, it'll all turn out just great !
UP THE VILLA ;)
I'm also flabbergasted that Gordon looks set for Sunderland rather than joinng Villa. Though Gordon is a good keeper, Boruc of Celtic is easily as good, if not better so he maybe worth a pop. By the way, who's our third choice keeper now that Olenjik has departed? The priority now has got to be a centre back and a right back before the start of the season.
dont know alot about curtis davies so i wont comment. but i think we should look abroad for the rest of our transfers this season we dont enough players that can create things out of nothing and we arent going to get that from the lower leagues or the spl. a right back(bruno alves), central defender(bosingwa or hangeland), right wing silva from valencia(gabby is better up the middle and young prefers the left) and an attacking midfeilder(still hoping to see sneijder at villa next season) and europe her we come.
I havent read anywhere that he is near signing for Sunderland. Sky sports website just says he is in talks with Us & Sunderland. BBC sport who when they publish a story like this are usually right say that he will spend 2 days with Sunderland and then 2 with us to decide.
As far as the other players they are just rumours. A few people have said they have seen Davis at VP but im not sure i believe all this sort of thing as it has happened before on this site and it didnt amount to anything. I like rumours but 90% of them are false.
Is anyone going to the Walsall match tomrrow? Do you think MON will field a fairly strong side or a more reserve team like he has done in previous years?
Thanks for the comment flabster
On ITV teletext it has said all summer that we have friendly fixtures at Walsall TONIGHT and tomorrow.
I was just about to post something about this myself.
My brother took his son to see Walsall v Nose and asked me why we were playing them twice in two days.
Any ideas?
HEY GUYS WE HAVE A FRIENDLY TOMORROW SO I DONT SEE DAVIS OR GORDON TO SIGN TOMORROW BUT THEY MIGHT COME WITH US A WATCH US PLAY? WELL REALLY HE HAD TO TALK TO SUNDERLAND FIRST BECAUSE ITS NEARER TO HIM THEN HE COME DOWN TO VILLA WE CAN OFFER HIM MORE MONEY(if he is one of those players who want it all)NOT BEING RELEGATED AND A PUSH FOR EUROPE I THINK WE WILL JOIN US
Ive had a look around (couldnt get on the walsall site) and i think it may be a mistake as most places are saying Tuesday night we play them (i hope so cause thats when im going) on a few pages it said Monday night. Im not really sure i think it maybe a mistake in dates.
its a bit much though 9m for davies but if mon is interested then it must meen he will be worth it
AV33 Bosingwa wasn't playing last night so maybe he could be joining us but I reckon we are more likely to sign Rosenior or Hoyte but I could be wrong. I saw on Skysports news that Gordon's agent said he was having a medical at Sunderland but just an hour before that I read that Villa and Sunderland had only just been given permission to speak to the player so how could things move so quickly? If the guy has any sense he'll join us. I'm sure Maloney and Petrov will have got in contact with him and told him plenty of positive things about Villa and MO'N was in Scotland for a few years and has been monitoring Gordon's progress for a while now. We're pushing for Europe this season and whilst Sunderland have spent a lot of money I'm not buying into the hype and I reckon they'll finish in the bottom 6 this season. The only thing that I can think of that would persuade Gordon to join Sunderland over us is the fact that Sunderland is a lot closer to Scotland which could play a big part if the guy wants to remain close to his home and family. I think the Gordon situation will be cleared up by the middle of the week and I expect him to sign for us along with Davies if we have had a bid accepted from the baggies.
According to BBC sport Gordon is having 2 days at Sunderland starting today and then 2 at Villa so that is why he had a medical at Sunderland and he will probably do the same at VIlla. I dont know if this will change now that Man City have come in for him as there isnt really enough time for him to have a 2 day trial with them aswell.
Its either going to come down to Gordon picking between Sunderland or Villa as he will have completed his trials or one of the 3 clubs will offer more (man city) and they will get him. Tbh though i dont think Gordon will want to go to City as they already have their number one and they are only looking for cover till he recovers.
Trust me mate Craig Gordan and a 10 million price tag is not just a cove keeper. He will be Man City's number 1 most definately.
I hope we get him, however i really do think it is in the balance at the moment, strong rumours are coming out of sunderlands corner, but then again they said they were signing Smith and Nugent and various other big names that instantly rejected a move there.
I know he wont be cover. My comment about him not being the number one wasnt thought out very well. What i meant was i thought City were only looking for cover until their number 1 comes back. But Sven is buying a whole new squad so he probably will bid aswell.
Sky Sports News reckoned we had all but signed Reo-Coker, weeks before we did, only for Villa to say that no contact had been made, so I don't think they're a very reliable source.
Most reports say that Gordon is talking to Sunderland and then he's coming to Villa for talks. If that's the case, I can't see him going to Sunderland.
Im gettin fed up how oneills wastin are money i want all of yu to calm down beacuse on neill is not gettin value for money here
wastin 8 mil on reo when yu could get danny murphy or ljungberg for 3mil Harewood was kk but could of got better striker with the money he paid for him. every bodies gettin load over craig gordon
and davies why we could of got jussi jasckalainen for 3mil and luke young 2.5 wich is better than payin 9m for every player we buy start gettin yur heads out of the clouds and start lookin wats hapnin
according to reports i in the papers CG is speaking to both clubs and telling us today where he will be playing this year, if it is a straight choice between us and sunderland it has to be us but you never know, my way of thinking is, if joins them over us there is no need to be disapointed as he would clearly have no ambition therefore would be no good for us anyway!whats more when sunderland get relegated at the end of the year we can steal him for 2m!!!!!!! come on gordon you know it makes sense!!!!
Matty B, I think it is you with your head in the clowds. Ljunberg? Why would we want to spend money on him? His virtually at the end of his career. Oneil bought reo coker, because he is a young great player who will only get better in the future. Same with ashely young.
[quote]Im gettin fed up how oneills wastin are money i want all of yu to calm down beacuse on neill is not gettin value for money here

Reo-Coker is 23, Murphy and Ljungberg are both 30. If both go for another 3 years works out at a million a year, if reo goes for 10 years its less than a million a year so how are they better value for money. And how many games would they manage a season Murphy played about 10 games last season Ljungberg about 20. MoN is building for the future we have just got rid of the dead wood why waste money on ageing players whos best days are behind them, Jääskeläinen is 32, Davies is 22 how can you say Jääskeläinen would be better value!
Villa are building for the future, we arent going to win the league this year, top 4 is even asking too much. We are buyoing young and building for the future, the players we have brought in are going to be here for the long term and that will bring success. Buying players who are at the end of their career serves no purpose.
But the thing that made me laugh the most about that comment is Ljungberg, considering how well he gets on with Mellberg would we really even think about signing him ;)
If Gordon picks Sunderland over us than they are welcome to him. Don't get me wrong I think Gordon I a great keeper and I'm hoping he picks us over them but if he doesn't he clearly will be making a decision based on other reasons than footballing ones. If he's ambitious and wants to win major trophies in the future, play with quality up and coming players, play for one of the most historic and successful English clubs and be part of a team that plays attractive football then he'll definitely join us but if not we'll probably se him making the shorter journey to Sunderland to play for a complete nutcase who manages a very mediocre side.
Matty b, you should be ashamed of your coments, why buy flagging old players when we want to buy young.?
You say 8m for Reo is a joke, 9.65m for Ashley Young was "too much" at the time according to most football experts, bet we could double that now if we wanted to sell him, MON isn't stupid, he will only pay over the odds if he thinks a player is worth it,the reason young brittish players cost so muxh is because they're rare and everyone wants them, to see them join Villa over Spurs, West Ham and the rest means that they can see that this sleeping giant is ready to waken!!
Wish some of you would wake up and think before you write a complete load of shite.
Well it would make sense why he might let Ridgewell go, if he truly thought he had the inside track on CD.
Also Gordon is going to be one of the best pickups by any club this off-season.
Please give us some players TODAY :)
Looking forward to travel to VP to watch some great football this year :)
sorry about this!its a bit off topic!but you know your fantasy league team!how do u finalise it? because when i go onto edit my team nothing comes up?
I would like to see craig gordon at VP aswell as davies and rosenior i think they are all good, young players who would fit into our team easily.
i watched on youtube craig gordon and some of the saves he pulls off is amazing get him signed up quick time !!
West Brom have signed a stoke defender, is that to replace curtis methinks?
At the end of last season out of all the center backs available to us i wanted Curtis Davies i think hes brilliant im a huge fan. I think MON knew who he wanted all summer and the respective clubs these players are from have been reluctant to lose there best players. While clubs like spurs have shown interest in Davies and have been rejected, MON has not gone elsewhere but remained interest until the player has become available, which seems like now with West Brom obviously buying cover in that position with intent to sell him. Thats why our summer in transfers has been slow. MON knows hes players and has not gone elsewhere if rejected like other clubs, which i like.
who is this arsene menessou? all i kno is that ipswich rejected him??
Matty B,what a goose! Youve got it all wrong there son, like everyone else has told you we are taking a new direction, a younger quicker squad is what were after. Ljungberg has pace, but hes past it, hes played his best football years ago. Young isnt that young, get with the times mate. Were not making a flash in the pan run this season....this is the start of a new era for villa. Its scary how much pace we will have and when the new younger signings come in......I cant wait, but Matty you need to get on the same page as most other Villa supporters and with the club itself. This isnt the nineties, we no longer buy players for their name, we factor in other elements now like talent, fitness, how they would fit, you know tiny things like that. Jump on board with the rest of us you might actually be surprised mate......
Yeah, I agree with Leroy - we do need a younger and fresher team, and this is just what we need. Anyone seen this football betting site? I've been using it to bet on the villa, it works a charm.
