Deserved win: Aston Villa 2 Chelsea 0

Sunday, 02 September 07, 12:10 PM · Comments (75)

Zat Knight scored on his debut and Gabriel Agbonlahor got the second to secure the three points for Aston Villa. What an excellent result.

On my notes from the game I was calling for substitutions at around 65 minutes and on 71 when Gabby and Carew picked up yellow cards I made further notes about bringing on Maloney and Harewood for the two players; it turns out it wasn't needed.

Petrov started on the bench, alongside Taylor, Harewood, Gardner and Maloney. He came on for Carew with 10 minutes to go pretty much to defend the one goal lead, but it wasn't needed after some magic from Ashley Young on the left to set up the second for Gabby.

Villa ended Chelsea's 18-match unbeaten streak in the league today and they did it not only because they created as many chances but because every player gave 100%. The football maybe wasn't as good as it could have been but that will come.

I'm sure there will be a match report coming from Doc later but as it stands now if we win our game in hand we could be third (or even higher but I'm not saying anything about that just yet).

I'm happy, I'm going for a beer. I am still a little surprised that Maloney didn't start, but I can't really go into that right now, as my beer and cheese sandwich is waiting.

The players: Carson, Mellberg, Knight, Laursen, Bouma, Agbonlahor, Reo-Coker, Barry, Young, Moore, Carew (Petrov 79).

What a result! Not sure how though, Laursen got very lucky against SWP rite at the start! if we're all honest that should have been a penalty! But it wasn't and we took our chances and won!

Only concern is, we gave away loads of corners and rarely won the headers when the ball came in, we could have problems if that continues.

However, how many other teams will be able to say they beat Chelsea by two clear goals come may?

Well done boys!

Superb result and superb team performance. I can't we restricted Chelsea to so few chances, Carson had very little to do due to the fact that Laursen and Knight were rock solid at the back. I was surprisingly pleased with Knight. I wasn't expecting a hell of a lot from him and was a bit nervous about him coming straight into the side today but I couldn't fault his performance and I'm delighted for him that he scored on his debut. Moore impressed me early on and looked threatening in front of goal, if he's given a run in the side I've no doubt the goals will come. NRC's passion and commitment in the centre of the park was inspirational, at times he ran the show and won almost every ball. Young and Gabby once again caused the opposition's defence bags of problems and the second goal was sheer heaven what a future they have. I'm over the moon as you can tell and this is the type of result we needed early on in the season to set us up for a successful campaign. We've all been going on all summer about the fact that we need another striker but today's performance has shown that we probably don't really need more forwards. The defence looks pretty solid now and with Davies still to come in it looks like we're going to be hard to score against. The signs are very promising. I'm trying my very best not to get carried away but after a result like this it's difficult not to. Knight signing of the summer? Well I can't complain so far. Come on Villa!!!

Young is clearly full of confidence now. He's had a great first few games and being called up to the England squad has given him an even bigger boost. If he continues to play like he is doing, the 8 million (or whatever it was) we paid for him will look like a bargain!

Great result but what annoyed me more than anything I can think of in my life was Gabby getting booked for saying "oi ref" yet you had that idiot Terry whinging throughout the match making so many fouls on Carew it was untrue yet he escapes unscathed.People wonder why Chelsea are disliked!

I was the only Villa supporter in my local in Fulham. I had to wait till i got home to let it all out! Great result, not the prettiest match ive ever witnessed mind you. Barry was great Laursen was a brick wall just about. Jose did us a huge favour by subbing SWP who was the only genuine threat, and leaving Malouda on, who was just about the worst player on the pitch. In the end it was a massive result and watching MONs reactions all day was funny. He is out there with the players more or less. Ash Young and Moore were dangerous down the flanks, and Carew was a big target, constantly sucking in 2 or 3 players. Chelsea were far from their best but we didnt let them do anything. They were frustrated and time and time agin they were shut down by our back 4. Lets hope we can keee it going UP THE VILLA!!!

Excellent result and most definately something to build upon for the season... the confidence will be sky high for weeks!

I have a feeling that you may not receive as many postings as usual this evening after an excellent result - this due to the fact that 50% of recent postings have been negative regarding the existing Villa side and what MON is building for the future.

Anyhow its 3 points in the bag and we are sitting in an excellent position after 3 tricky games from the first 4.

The only downside on an excellent performance is the fact that Carew doesnt appear to be getting the breaks; last season he looked the complete striker - maybe he needs a goal to settle him down.

What a great day!!!

There wasn't one player that i could say had a 'poor' game. Carew was penalised by the ref everytime he got the ball but even so I'd like to see Maloney instead of him.

As for the back line and midfield ... top class!

Young and Reo Coker look well worth the money!!

And how good it was to lose the battle at every corner then score from our first!!

Let's hope it's just the start of a promising season!!!

what a game, was heart on the sleve stuff from every single villa player today.
Atmosphere was electric and we certainly had the 12 man today with out supporters. They appreciate things that most other football fans wouldnt, like tracking back 50-60yards after you lost the ball, keeping posession of the ball when needed to waste time, attack and go for the second goal using our youth and pace upfront.
just a brilliant game all around and very impressed with the way martin oneill is moulding this villa team.

Well I have to say that our back four were excellent today and Laursen was simply fantastic. It kind of makes you think what we could have done if he had been fit for the last two seasons. Dare I say it but shades of McGrath? I said at the beginning of the season and in other posts that I rate ReoCoker and today he was fantastic. This has put me in an excellent mood for the week ahead. Chelsea came out and gave us close to their best shot...I don't think they were poor, I think Villa outworked them, had a good plan, and showed they belong on the same pitch. Makelele and Mikel chased from the game. Villa players being physical, showing some attitude and composure. Abramovich looking downcast and leaving his seat early. The crowd were fantastic, great atmosphere.

Massive result. I seem not to see as many of the glass-half-empty crowd on here today. Perhaps that's because the proof of MON's pudding was on display today. Ashley Young certainly outplayed SWP. Laursen was immense. NRC, what heart and commitment. Bouma solid as always. Gabby looked much better, and what a great goal. I thought Olaf looked a bit at sea at RB, to be honest, but no harm done.

When was the last time Villa were a goal up against a top-four team, held against the pressure, then scored a cracker of a second goal to assure the points? That's the stuff, lads.

Up the Villa!!!

Fantastic result. I would like to dedicate that one to Matt Le Tissier, who totally wrote off the Villa in his assessment on SSN. He dismissed Reo Coker as 'run of the mill', and Ashley Young as a dubious signing.

Reo Coker was immense, Ashley looked frightening and Martin Laursen put in a masterful performance. Chelsea looked toothless. I would like to see the team hold onto the ball a little more confidently, but all in all I am ecstatic tonight.

So, like I said, this ones for Matt Le Tissier. Write us off at your peril.

Leroy
Leroy Wrote: | 00.25BST | Sep 3, 2007

It surprised me to discover that Chelsea have not won at Villa Park since 1999 and, in all honesty, it would surprise me if they did not win on Sunday.

Villa have not been all that impressive this season or last, despite having Randy Lerner's billions backing them. I see Martin O'Neill has brought in Zat Knight from Fulham and another centre-back, West Brom's Curtis Davies, has been linked with a move there.

They'll need to be tight at the back, because I don't think the money that's gone on new forwards - John Carew, Ashley Young, Marlon Harewood - has been particularly well-spent.

If you are a Villa fan and a billionaire takes over your club, the likes of Harewood and Knight are not necessarily the kind of signings you would expect to follow.

I think Martin is reluctant to pay over the odds for players just because his chairman has a few bob although, having said that, £8.5m for a run-of-the-mill midfielder - Mr Reo-Coker - seems pretty steep to me.

A top-half finish is probably about the best Villa can hope for, and it would represent progress under Martin O'Neill if they could end the season still in the hunt for a European place.

Last season's head-to-head

Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa 0-0 Chelsea

The manager will be hoping that the performance in the 5-0 Carling Cup win at Wrexham has instilled a bit of confidence in the players, because they have a tough task this weekend.

Chelsea, for me, have been pretty much the same old Chelsea this season, despite Jose Mourinho claiming he's remodelled them as the great entertainers.

Jose talks the talk and usually follows it up by walking the walk, so maybe we'll see a big improvement in that regard. But...Kevin Keegan's Newcastle - that was real entertainment, and Chelsea have a long way to go before they get near that.

Pulling off a deal for Ronaldinho would obviously help, though it tickled me to hear John Terry say: 'We'd love to have him, but he'd have to learn to track back.' Typical defender!

If Jose really wants to entertain, he should think about getting Joe Cole in his starting line-up. I read rumours of a bit of a rift between player and manager, but Joe is the kind of player supporters would happily pay to watch.

It's easy to criticise, and we shouldn't forget that the Blues are top of the pile. When the players look at the table and see the name of their club at the top, there will automatically be a bit more arrogance about them.

Even at this early stage of the season, Chelsea are going to take a bit of shifting.

Le Tiss predicts

AWAY WIN: I think it will be tight - the last three league games here between these two have finished 0-0, 1-1 and 0-0 - and I take Chelsea to nick it by the odd goal. They are still doing what they do best - getting results even when they are not playing well. I'm going for 1-2.

What a fool, there is so much wrong with this article, sorry if it takes up all this space but i wanted people to know what the "experts" expect from our Villa.

I don’t understand why no one seems to recognize the job Carew is doing upfront except MON himself and maybe a couple of others. He is constantly keeping two or three of Chelsea’s defenders in work, they are giving him all of their attention, and rest of the Villa can play their own game against the remaining defender…

We really needed Maloney on in midfield at around 75-80, Barry and Reo-Coker looked exhausted, but we still battled on. Ashley Young definetly man of the match with two assists.

Absolutely amazing! Best Villa match ive watched in so long.

Here are my thoughts for those who may be interested!

Carson- not much to do at all and looked good when needed.
Bouma- solid. SWP gave him a rough time but he dealt with it well.
Laursen- stunning. Was performing gymnastics to keep Drogba out of the game. That bit with him on the ground and he must have only got a toe to the ball to nick it from Drogba. I’m an Irish man but ill use Churchill’s “blood sweat toil and tears” for Larsen!
Knight- cracking debut.
Mellberg- very good.
Agbonlahor- was everywhere. Tracked back to pick up SWP a good bit. Was it me or did SWP float all over the place? Brilliant goal and he just got better and better. I completely eat my words on Gabby. I’ve complained about him in the past but he was absolutely brilliant.
Reo-coker- brilliant. My bro was watching and is a very bitter west ham fan. Keeps saying Nigel is rubbish. He was eating his words every few minutes this afternoon.
Barry- brilliant.
Young- dynamite. Watching him take that ball down and sprint after it shot up in the air when he passed Belletti was pure class!
Moore- very good. Think he should be given a good run now.
Carew- good and I think he can do so much more.
SUBS:
Petrov- fair play. Looked really sharp- best 15mins all season!

What a great game! Fair play to Villa and to all of you who were at the game, I watched it on Sky at home and Villa Park was absolutely rocking! Awesome to see so fair play!

And anyone who says Chelsea played badly- completely untrue.

now it needs to be maintained, and if it is brilliant..and if we turn over man city and everton as well, then we can start to think we may have something.
we all care about the villa, even wingeing gits like me..lets hope im wrong this year,,on todays its lookin good
but i reserve my judgment on oneils transfer activity, and the fact we may be caught short because of it ..

Mourinho feels Chelsea put out a makeshift midfield. Just as a reminder, Chelsea's midfield - to start - was Shaun Wright-Phillips, Michael Essien, Claude Makelele, John Obi Mikel and Florent Malouda. In obe respect he's right: it was made to look completely ordinary and makeshift by Barry and Reo-Coker.
UTV!

And another thing:

Telegraph: Man of the match Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa) ·Scored his team's second goal ·Had three shots on target ·Completed 79% of his passes

Well that's put me in my place!

I was the only Villa fan in the pub and I screamed for the second goal. Absolutely loved it.

Laursen looked like the best defender in the world yesterday and McClaren must be loving himself for picking Ashley Young for England after his performance yesterday.

Good to see Villa Fans scoring for Villa.
Zat Knight was immense at the back and loved his goal celebration. Thats 2 goals in 2 games for ZK! Looks a bargain already ;) As soon as AY picked up the ball and ran straight at the Chelsea defence i knew we were going to get a second goal!
