Feel the force Luke and shaggy perm please Nicky, about to sign for Aston Villa

Thursday, 07 August 08, 02:58 AM · Comments (227)

Sources on the net and a rumour coming out of Villa Park that there is a medical or two lined up for today suggest that the deals for Luke Young and Nicky Shorey are almost done.

I've never met a bloke called Nicky before but I have seen him play football and he's decent enough. He's a hard worker, so falls into the category of player that Martin O'Neill likes.

He's also 27 years old, so doesn't seem to fit into the long term strategy of building for the future, but maybe he's here to fill in for Wilfred and provide competition when he is fit again?

I'm also only having a joke about his name. I mean, Nicky is a girls name, I doubt his parents wanted to give him a girls name and I'd guess his real name is Nicholas or a variation of, so he must like Nicky, if people still use it. Nothing wrong with it, but that's where the joke about a perm comes from.

Luke on the other hand is not a girls name and at 29 he's clearly not purchased for the Champions League in 2011, but he does play in a position that we don't have anyone, so I'm sure he'll be a welcome addition to the squad, if the rumour is true and he's making his way to the club for a medical.

Now, the season starts next week and these two players, while maybe not what we were all hoping for, are experienced and extremely professional. They'll give 100% for 95 minutes every match and will not give up.

Under Martin O'Neill you'd hope they'd get better too and I think we'll be better with them than without anyone at left back or right back, so it's a move in the right direction and quite a good one. I get a star for stating the obvious.

I've also just had someone SMS in something, which if true, is very exciting, but I need to speak to my contact in Birmingham to get a 'Damian, you know I can't talk to you about this' before I can confirm it's actually happening. A no comment is worth so much more than you'd think, especially when you get a no when something isn't happening.

That's it for now. Going to get a big cup of coffee as I have quite a bit of work to get through today and maybe we're going to get a signing or two. As soon as I get that other bit of news I'll let you know, but if it comes off, we'll all be happy.

I would be thrilled with these two,A couple of top english full backs for under 10 million. They can both get forward too.

I agree, both of these might not be in the long term future plans of the club but will do a very decent job for us right now and for the next couple of years. Both of these full backs are good going forward and defensively. We will be much stronger and now all we need is a good right sided attacker and we are just about sorted.

Damo, your a big fcuking tease :) Whats this exciting news?

Anyway, will be very happy with these to players. I read somehwere that Nicky Shorey has been assured first team football if he performs like last season. Maybe MON is hoping when Freddie gets back he'll rotate from LB to CB like he does sometimes for his country.

Damo, confirm that link and give me something to smile about.

Can you give us a hint Damian? i hope its not that we have just signed young or shorey because that would be boring.

However, if we get them i think they will be 2 good signings. They maybe unspectacular but they get the job done and they don't get injured so we should have a pretty settled back line once Zat Knight is dropped.

I wish I hadn't said anything now as I've had emails and I've got you lot nagging me.

Basically, it's the same situation as last January. I said we were bidding for someone on Jan 31st but couldn't name straight away. I named later in the day when the deal broker down and it came out a few weeks later that it broke down. It's from the same source and if I name the player now, it's so so early in the process, then I risk losing my source.

As soon as I'm allowed to say, I'll say, but it's very exciting and we're literally at the stage of putting in the bid this morning, according to the source.

Whereas they might not be be world beaters or 'top english@ full abcks as someone earlier stated they will give us some balance which was badly missed last year. I was actually hoping we would go for Shorey before Bouma got injured because while he might not be the greastest defender he does go forward very well and will supply some good crosses into the box which bouma could not do.

Fair enough Damian... On a scale of one to four

1 being Ronaldinho to
4 being Emile Heskey, how exciting is this rumour? And any chance we can have a hint at their position?

Birdman zz
Birdman zz Wrote: | 14.27BST | Aug 7, 2008

What we've been missing for years are full backs who can get forward and chip in with goals - Shorey has got a great left foot, and Young is first and foremost solid at the back - but he can get forward and crack in a wonder goal every now and then. These players are solid, but unspectacular. You know they are going to give 100%, and will not cause any problems in the dressing room. They want to prove themselves - These guys have got MON written all over them, and I'd happy to have them aboard
.
Now for a winger, a midfielder, a striker and a centre back.

Go get 'em MON 8)

I've just wet myself with the excitement. Champions league challange in our dreams. This shows that MON hasn't got a transfer plan he just gets desperate towards the end of the window. Luke Young ha ha ha what a joke & we were linked with Miguel etc etc. What happens if Luke Young gets injured in the 1st game we are back to square 1. We need at least 12 players.
2 x Right Back
2 x Left Back
2 x Centre Half ( Zat Knight is not a footballer let alown a Centre Half).
1 x Midfield general ( Please dont say Coker is that player he's rubbish).
1 x Barry Replacement.
1 x Moore Replacement ( 1 that can score goals unlike Gabby headless).
1 x Right midfielder.
At least 2 stocking fillers.

We all now know this wont happen so we need answers is it our Manager not having a clue when it comes to transfers or is it the American credit crunch Mr Learner? I'm beging to believe it's both a match made in heaven. Until Learner spends any of his money because i don't believe he has spent a penny, the money spent so far has been generated by the club i will have my doubts.

Rant Over.

Young and Shorey will be great additions to the squad, for a combined total of £7m to get two full backs with good premiership experience is fantastic news.....

Yet people stiiiilll moan, it is so so tiresome. We don't need 12 players and we're not going to get them anyway. If these signings go through then MON can focus on a RW, and maybe a Striker as well but don't expect miracles.

Why can't you just moan when this 'disastrous transfer situation' translates into a poor league position next year - please try and retain some realism!!

(P.S - I've heard the rumour is Diego Milito...)

Good news on the two imminent signings [hopefully!]. Also intrigued at your third possibility?! My only issue with what you say about these two, at 27 and 29, is that they both can easily play for 5 more years [that would make the older 34], so the champions league in 2012 [4 years away] should be no problem? Not everyone has to be 21 [even MON knows that!]

villa_tommy
villa_tommy Wrote: | 14.50BST | Aug 7, 2008

I'll be pleased with this....but only if they're going to be our cover in those two positions (and bloody good cover they are). Doyle and Bouma to play left back until o'halloran starts to shine sounds very promising. Not really sure who the right back in the reserves/academy is but he's got to be good if we won both of those leagues. Young could be good cover for 2/3 years but we need to sign another right back, and one who like to get forward a lot if Bouma's playing on the other side. Just offer Nelson barry's paypacket...that should get him!!!

Sky sports are reporting that a fee has been agreed with Middlesborough for Luke Young. I personally think this is a pretty solid signing. If we can bring in Nicky Shorey this week as well as a few more players I'll be very relieved.

I know many of us are worried about the way MON carries out his transfer dealings, and I check all the sites in earnest every day to see who we're linked with but I think we just have to accept that he knows what he's doing. The whole Gareth Barry saga has gone on for way to long, but fair play to O'neil, if we get the suggested 18m I think it's a great bit of business and we can put that money to good use for future signings with hopefully that big signing at the end of the month as Damien has suggested!

Theres the serbian Zigic, who wants to leave valencia but just rejected a move to galatasaray.. my bets are on him. But is he really that exciting?
There could also could be Eidur Gudjohnsen, even though his agent said he'd rather return to london than birmingham. Much better prospect than Zigic imo.

Other striking possibilities could be Pavlyuchenko, Podolski or David Silva - this could possibly earn MON a knighthood.

But villa desperately need a proper left winger imo, i reckon MON could be looking at Rakitic, Zhirkov, or maybe even Shcwiensteiger or maybe the other Silva from valencia.
I think Young is enough in the right wing position, especially now theres Routledge.

I'd laugh if villa highjacked tottenhams move for Asharvin though!

More exciting is Ferdinand and Ashton. Anton is solid and comfortable on the ball would add great depth to our defence and in Ashton you have a natural goalscorer, avoiding injury and under martin he could become the next Shearer!

From what i can tell from reading various reports over the last few weeks, we were interested, may have lodged a bid and Schuster was in the throes of deciding whether to let him go or not. Then Liverpool missed the dealline with GB and everything about De La Red went quiet, could it be that MON is trying to resurrect a deal for De La Red to make him De La Claret and Blue? He would match the profile of being a replacement for Barry anyway.

Mon stayed over in Valencia last night and flew out this morning. Spanish radio/ media confirmed yesterday that a representative from a Premiership club had been at Valencia yesterday holding talks with two players. Shortly after this Valencia CF released a statement saying that no settlement on a wage increase for Joaquin could be reached. Make of this what you like.

Marca - Aston Villa prepare bid for De la Red. The Premiership club will hold talks with Madrid officials later today and have prepared an €8 million bid for the versatile midfielder. The player has previously been valued at around €12 million - by Marca - and is also said to be attracting interest from Arsenal.
