Finally, some good news today

Wednesday, 02 May 07, 09:31 AM · Comments (7)

Patrik Berger is to be offered a new contract. Now, I'm not normally a fan of offering contracts to players at his age simply because I think you can get younger but he's done enough to deserve it in my opinion.

When he has played recently he has turned games, created chances and looked hungry. What more can you ask from a player?

If he can stay injury free he's also the ideal player to have on the bench for the last half an hour to completely change the game.

I'm not sure of the details. I'd expect it would be a rolling one year contract but the player would probably like a little longer. Either way I hope he signs.

Other news today, which isn't so good, Shaun Maloney is likely to miss the rest of the season after picking up a knock in the match against Manchester City.

I'm really looking forward to next season and seeing this lad get a proper run in the team. I've got a sneaky feeling he may be the real deal and if he is I fancy top six.

In my opinion, Berger should be given a deal 'til December and if he has managed to stay fit, keep him. He has struggled for fitness until last month and since then has proved his point -- he still has some petrol in the tank. But if he becomes injured and unfit again, i don't think he'd be worth the contract.

It is no coincidence at all that the return to form and fitness of Patrik Berger has coincided with Villa's late season revival. He has looked a class above most of his teammates for several weeks, and deserves the offer of a new contract. As much as anything, it shows the managerial skill and wisdom of Martin O'Neill. Under O'Leary, Berger would have been a spent and frustrated force.

Good news. I agree with Damian, I wouldn't normally like to see 'old' players get new contracts but he'll be worth it.

well be honest i think he needs to get a bit fitter before we have him back, i think his fitness this season was poor, he only improved this month realy. overall a good decision... lets just hope he keeps up his perfomance he has shown this month
