Football today: Steven Gerrard the cheat and we know Joey Barton is a thug, but is he also making racist comments to our players?

I know none of these players play for us but this is a blog and as such I want to look at the game around us today.
For anyone that didn't see the Liverpool game last night, Steven Gerrard cheated his way to a penalty with only a couple of minutes to go and got away with it. It was a shocking decision by the linesman, but he can be forgiven as he has to make a very quick decision, but how come the player gets away with it all the time?
Video evidence clearly shows him diving, it has done on several occasions to get penalties and free kicks - so why isn't he punished for cheating?
I'm not talking financially as the £250k he'd earn in two weeks is nothing to a player with £10mn. in the bank - but how about you ban him for three games - then he'll get pressure from the club not to cheat.
The funny thing is, Gerrard is a not only a cheat, but a hypocrite.

Now, it just winds me up that players can get away with this and not get punished. Why doesn't someone do something when it's clear as day that he cheated? Surely the league or the FA have a responsibility to clean up the game where possible?
Moving on to the thug Joey Barton. It turns out today that he might actually be a racist thug also and if he is, would it actually surprise anyone?
The talk is that Joey Barton racially abused Gabby during the match the other night and that the club are considering legal action and maybe even getting in lip readers. Surely if Gabby says he was racially abused, it should be good enough to make an official complaint - there shouldn't be any players like Barton in the game.
But the point of this post is surely something can be done about these players. Barton is a thug and what he did should result in a ban and as for Gerrard, he's cheating and getting away with it, time after time - it's wrong and the powers that be, just sit there and let it happen.
There needs to be a panel of ex-players that look at games and any players that blatantly cheat need to be punished in such a way that they don't try and cheat again - it's just wrong that this is allowed to happen and it would be so easy to stop.

I must say when i saw Barton flick Gabby's lips the first thing that came into my mind was that could be construed as a bit racist. I don't know if that incident is connected to the complaint but i wouldn't be surprised. The guy is the defination of scum who doesn't deserve the talent he has. He deserves to rot in jail for most of his life just his brother.

I have to say Damian, I was watchin the game last night and i was absolurtely livid when he got the penalty...so much so I felt at the end like 'we' had lost!

First off I'd like to say that I couldn't agree more about Steven Gerard. He's a quality player but he's a cheat. Loved the quotes.
Secondly, in regards to the Barton thing - he put his finger on Abonlahor's lip because he'd spat the dummy. If he'd said anything racist do you not think there might have been more of a reaction? I'm not condoning Joey's actions here - it definitely wasn't a 'slap' as the rapidly-attaining-legendary-status Setanta commentators called it, but it was very stupid and he did risk being sent off for raising a hand.

But I watched the game too. And it wasn't a cheat, it wasn't a dive and it wasn't a penalty - it was two player going for the ball and one of them fell from the challenge. And the referee blows the whistle. I think you should shift your focus.
And as you may have read today - Gerrard didn't think it was a penalty!!!

Newcastle fan here so obviously I've got a different opinion on some points.
Firstly, you're right on Gerrard. He's been doing it for years, most notably when he pointed for the free-kick and then got 'fouled'.
Secondly, Barton has been a despicable thug in the past. No argument from me there. If he has racially abused Agbonlahor, he should be out on his ear. No argument there either. However, I don't think he did.
Apparently, Agbonlahor was "thrusting his bottom lip at Barton, as if to suggest Barton is behaving like a baby", which was what led to Barton doing the whole lippy-tappy swearyness. Now if Agbonlahor has been doing this, is it not possible that this was what Barton was referring to with 'big lips'?

The point with Barton is that you don't raise your hands, end of. He hasn't got the self control to stop it and although it was a big nothing it was a sending off offence. Steven Gerrard cheats by diving as do a lot of players. I don't like it but it's for match officials to 'man up' and start giving out first and second yellows for it.
As for Joey Barton, he clearly hasn't changed - all you need to do is look at the viciousness of his face at times and you can see that he's barely holding on. Yes, he's under intense scrutiny but considering that most teams would have sacked him long before it came down to a jail sentence then he's not in a position to complain.

I'm glad the video included that disgraceful dive at Sheffield United that robbed them of 2 points and ended up costing them survival.
Video evidence is used to overturn red and yellow cards, why can't it be used to see players who are diving and suspend them for matches. That would cut the diving right out.
But you will notice that ManU can't talk (C. Ronaldo) and Chelsea can't (Deco, Drogba for starters). Arsenal seems to be the one team in the "Top 4" that doesn't traffic in that nonsense. It's a shame that it would be them the Villa have to beat out to get into a Champions League spot. I'd much rather edge out any of the other three.

The only time in recent years when a player having been awarded a penalty has turned to the ref to say that it wasn't - he just slipped over - was Robbie Fowler. The ref booked him for dissent, then let him take the pen, his manager (forget who now - not important it's only Liverpoo) gave him a bollocking to boot. Point is, if it's awarded, take it 'cos it all evens out in the end. BUT no diving, that's cheating. I'm not sure about last night, it did look as if SG made a meal of it.

If I was playing against the likes of Barton (even with my limited skills I meet one or two of these characters)I'm pretty confident I know what to expect. Gabby's job was to outskill him. Well having read a fair few of the above "Comments" i have to say my viewpoint on it all..
As for Gerrards "dive" well i actually said to my wife about 3 mins before he did it, that as Liverpool were losing, one of them, probably Gerrard, would inevitably run & fall over someones leg & be 100% guaranteed to get a penalty. Well i admit i was wrong... He didn't fall over his leg.. he simply waited until the guy was just about to head the ball & then, while his attention & vision were obviously on the ball, he ran from his blind side & jumped full on into him then collapsed onto the floor as though hit by a Mike Tyson (or should i say Joey Barton) punch.. Is it cheating?.. Blatantly yes.. BUT.. & this is what staggers me!!
Over the last 2 seasons i have been studying the effects of dodgy decisions in games involving the top 4 clubs.. The interesting thing is there is a very clear pecking order as to who gets the majority of "suspect" calls from referees.
1.Man Utd
2.Liverpool
3.Chelsea
4.Arsenal
all the other teams in the prem get pretty evenly balanced good/bad decisions UNLESS THEY ARE PLAYING AGAINST THE TOP 2 IN THAT LIST! & to a lesser extent the 3rd & 4th placed teams. The thing is Richard Scudamore infamously stated that the FA prefer it if the top 4 remain the top 4 as it brings more money into their coffers from abroad.. & THESE GUYS EMPLOY THE REFEREES!
So no wonder Gerrard takes a dive in the last minutes if Lfc are losing.. Or no wonder the injury time at Old Trafford is double what it is everywhere else..But only if Utd are losing of course!! No wonder Vidic can practically assault someone in the Utd area but no Pen is given! They do it because they know they will get the decision!! Would Newcastle or Villa get a decision like that in the last minute at Old Trafford or Anfield?...........I THINK NOT!!!
