Friedel bid accepted, if Blackburn have another keeper signed

Wednesday, 23 July 08, 02:02 PM · Comments (101)

Blackburn Rovers have accepted a bid for Brad Friedel on the basis that their bid for another goalkeeper, at another club, is accepted.

If we're the club making the bid is another story, however it is is likely.

Do I like the idea of us buying a 67 year old keeper? It doesn't matter. If we buy him, Martin O'Neill likes the idea, so that is all that matters.

Martin O'Neill is building a team for the future and right now he doesn't have a keeper to go after, so why not take someone that has demonstrated he can deal with the Premier League?

What I mean to say is; Paul Robinson, Robert Green and Scott Carson, all English keepers, are (too expensive) unavailable, so why not go for someone that you wouldn't normally go for.

Shucks; Brad is a good keeper and I'm sort of happy. I'm actually not impressed or satisfied, but happy.

Up the Villa!

Friedel's a good keeper and most importantly he's free from all the pressure our supposedly young and talented (and often prone to errors) number 1's seem to suffer from.

Bring him on board, Martin.

I think it's exactly what Villa need behind the back 4 this season. A keeper with plenty of experience to steady the ship. He will also be a good influence on Guzan, who is young and will surely get a few games. Then after a couple of seasons Guzan can make the step up, and be alot better keeper for it.

Let's just have everything crossed, and hope the deal goes through!!

Yeh ok he is quite old but very reliable and is probably better than most younger keepers in the premier league!id be happy if we got 2 decent seasons out of him and at the same time he will be grooming brad guzan as our number one for the future so all in all im pleased!

Thankfully we have got the keeper situation sorted out, or almost anyway...Now we need a couple of decent central defenders because Zat Knight is never going to cut it at Villa, he's a reserve team player at best and shouldn't get anywhere near the Villa first team. He lacks concentration and makes silly mistakes every game...Watch the new signings start rolling in over the next couple of weeks...Up the Villa!

Friedel has been one of the best goalkeepers in the premier league in the last decade, and i would have been impressed if we signed him 5 years ago.But how can buying a 37 year old footballer be part of our 5 year plan?
The first thing we need to do to climb a cuple of places up the league on last season is to tighten up on the ammount of goals we let in.Freidel has a season left in the premier league, and then we have a new goalie again. That will be four keepers in four seasons.I just wish we'd sign someone in that position that can be our number one for the foreseeable future.someone like Artur Boruc.

We are now just trying to get a team for today forget the 5year plan & the Future
Brad is a good Goalie, but lets forget the Dream of winning anything or keeping our promising players in the Future we are Still a Selling Club

The most important things are that he's a good, proven, reliable experienced Premiership keeper and he will be able to coach Guzman, the youngsters and whoever we bring in long-term - should Guzan not be the long-term number 1.

Anyone who witnessed Friedel's performance against Man U last season will know he will be a great signing. Good for Brad II to have a mentor. Whats the score with his work permit, it seems to be taking a long time.
A Right back, Centre half, midfield, and a striker and we are beginning to take shape.
I thought we might go for Cimbonda, strange bloke but good RB, Could do worse than Malbranque, Sharner would be a good squad addition and a goal poacher to finish the job - we should have signed Defoe in Jan.

If we get Friedel it should prove an excellent move. As long as he can stay injury free,he would provide stability in that position for 2-3 seasons( a long time in football these days). How old is edwin van der Sar?? David James (dare I mention)? Keepers mature and can play until at least 67!! We have not signed him yet and depends on Blackburn getting someone else. therefore, not imminent and, other than agreeing fee, is old news.
THIS IS CRACK: WE NEED URGENTLY: 2 right backs, left back cover, a quality centre-back,at least 1 right midfield( I agree SWP) and top drawer striker(no expense spared) VILLA for VILLA.Dream on Johno!!
Andyarkitect's son for chief scout! Doesn't look like there's anyone at Villa to make redundant from that position.

look at it this way 2.5mil for at most 3 years if you done that for say 10 years thats only 7.5 mil, in which a goal keeper of freilel's standards is good. even tho after 3 years guzan could be our no1, great move if i say so. trust in oneill and it will pay dividends. dont trust in oniell and you shall regret it

So, One keeper is reliant on a work permit and the other is reliant on the signing of another keeper...this could blow up in our face if it all goes tits up!

Lets hope that the rest of our signings are a bit more straight forward.

I will be truly amazed if Milner isn't at VP this season, also Finan. But this is more wishful thinking than any insider knowledge.

As an American growing up playing er.. soccer, Brad Friedel was one of my heroes. I couldn't be happier that he will most likely be finishing his career at Villa. Friedel and Guzan working together for a couple of years would certainly do the US National squad some good. I guess I'm getting ahead of myself since neither of these deals are done. Fingers crossed!

He and guzan are perfect combination. Friedal, a good, solid, commanding, experienced keeper will play this season with Guzan playing in carling cup, then next season it may be roles reversed and Friedal will be happy as he gets a good contract to finish his career. Both from same country Friedal can help Guzan to settle and adjust to premiership and it could increase our american fanbase which can only help revenue.

Now lets see some more perfect combinations, ideally starting down the right hand side!

He could hit the ball as hard as Bruce Rioch,Thomas Hitzelburger and I believe, when asked about his secret for penalty-taking said 'I twist my foot inside-out and get the goalkeeper going ga-ga'. In fact he didn't need to because he hit the ball so hard the goalkeeper had little hope of keeping it out even if he was in the way!

Great signing. He's been in the top 3 keepers in the prem over the past few years and has a couple of years left in the tank while Guzan adjusts. And it fits the 5 year plan - the better we do in the Prem and Europe, the better the players we get and in a couple of years hopefully we can attract the best and break into the top 4. No harm with a couple of short term signings to get us there with youth coming up for when we get there.

Some of you must be joking. Friedel has a few seasons left in him, and at times looks like the best keeper in the league. He is consistent, the perfect mentor for Guzan and an excellent goalkeeping coach in the making.

2 million is a steal. Friedel (albeit indirectly) is a fantastic investment in the future of Aston Villa. Well done MON.

Sky Sports tonight analised Friedel's percentages on catches and stops and the bloke has a very impressive ratio at all levels.

95% success rate on catches, for example: he's been an outstanding keeper for years now and - at 37 - has at least 2 top seasons left in him.

Now can we please start looking at the right back position..

Its all going slowly but i would bet my prized 93 green and red away kit that we have a few signings to smile about the week after the intertoto provided we dont balls it up. As for the selling club comment above I dont agree, we have had 1 big money offer this season and its mot like mon has done anything but fight scumpool for every penny barry is worth. By the way, rumour has it DIC are going to buy the pool, can you imagine 60 thousand scousers running round anfield all with DIC on their shirts - classic! Up the Villa!

Definitely a good signing IMO. One of the best keepers in the premiership last season and is defintiely someone Guzan will learn a hell of a lot from. Still hoping we get Hennessey in at some point, seen him play a lot for Wales and he is unbelievable. Great shot stopper, comes for crosses, is vocal and only 21. Some of the saves he made against the Dutch at the end of the season were out of this world.

I have now read these pages for the last few weeks and although i am glad we have Martin O'Neill at the the helm. I actually agree with DOL that some so called supporters at Villa Park are actually FICKLE. Facts are we have improved under MON, 6th any other season would get us European football str8 away. I will concur we need to strengthen squad (esp RB), however, has no one noticed reserves and youth team doing well, maybe we could give a few players the chance to show what they can do (any one remember Hansons quoute "you will never win anything with Kids", sticks in my mind because we stuffed em 3-1 opening day of the season). Three final thoughts, I have never heard these promises of World Class signings even when RL and MON came along(can any 1 enlighten me), contray to popular belief, the real football world is different to Champ Mgr on your PC, and MON under Clough won 2 European Cups at a less fashionable club than us, maybe just maybe he learnt something there.

firstly, taglor, shutup mate. we are about to make a great signing and you just go right on and put it down. Friedel is experienced, commanding and still has at least 2 seasons left in him. He is a big improvement on Carson.

Now once saturday is over and we are in the Uefa Cup, more players will want to come to Villa. Has anyone ever wondered that maybe MON has been rejecting these offers from Liverpool so that once we are in Europe, are signing players and moving in the right direction maybe he will compare us to liverpool and see we are the better option. As much as i dont like saying it after he has spit his chips in the NOTW article, we are a much better side when he is playing.

Come on MON 2 rb's (nelson, miguel, warnock as backup), a cb (kaboul, ferdinand) a right midfielder (SWP PLEASE! if not id settle for milner but show ambition and go at SWP, routledge has looked ok in preseason and so could be backup) and surprise me with a goal scorer.

Taglor. You are not the Messiah, you are a very naughty boy. MON is the Messiah so let him get on with the job. Please just cheer up!

taglor for president !

not much news or even a new thread on here today. I'm starting to get really worried but on reading the mail tonight, it appears MON is not that bothered about the clock ticking. Don't know what to make of it.

Hibs v Barcelona on Setanta 2 right now. Spaniards 4-0 up after about half an hour ! That Messi looks tasty...and not in an atlas way !!! :D ;)

UP THE VILLA ;)

cookie...I wouldn't worry about the Man City thing...It's only a light hearted bit of fun. It's character building to be able to laugh at one's self. Let's face it, as Villa fans we have to be able to laugh at ourselves most of the time! ;)

bloody hell atlas....can you still buy property in this country for only 120 grand? ;D

i bet you would know atlas, do you often ask about paper rounds or do you just notice when your looking for little boys? and you have a house for 120k, what area because for that price i might buy a few of them unless your talking about the caravan you live in that fits your 50 inbred kids in

Been reading the blackburn sites and they are gutted about Big Brad leaving, saying how he has won them so many points last season....

When was the last time you heard stories like that from a goalie at Villa park....

Come on down Brad !!!

Blackburns bid has been accepted. We should have Freidel by the end of the day! Bring on Odenske!!! ;D

Friedel will be a great signing for Villa all round. Still 2 years younger that David James and they reckon he's still got a couple of years in him. Last season showed MON that one position in the team where you can't afford to rely on 'young talent' is the GK. Friedel has a goal-keeping accademy in Cleveland (home of the Browns), and a friend of Randy Lerner. Brad will be coming to sort out the GKs for the next 10 yrs . I for one will be much happier with him between the sticks for as long as he can, before handing them on to Brad Jnr, UP THE VILLA!!!!

WardAVFC.....It would be nice, but we are stuck with Taylor in the sticks for Saturday. Big Brad not registered in time!
