Guzan deal breaks down

Thursday, 31 January 08, 10:53 AM · Comments (75)

Brad Guzan's proposed £2m move to Villa is off after he failed to get a work permit.

The Home Office, being the football experts they are, rejected his application out of hand due to him only playing 5 games for his country. What they didn't consider is at 22-years-old he is lucky to have any.

I don't know anything about the lad, although what I do know is he isn't British and that surprises me.

Hopefully we can get our finger out and get a bid in for Defoe before he signs for Pompey on the off chance he wants to play for a sleeping giant.

If we hear anything else you'll be the first to know.

I'm a little surprised they denied the work permit, since Guzan seems to be the U.S. national team backup right now.
Well, we'll see what happens.

I really doubt MON was after this guy to replace Carson, more likely to replace whiney Sorenson. Pretty crappy though considering their are plenty of none internationals or players with less international caps playing in this country.

Guzan would've been the third keeper after Sorenson finds a pub league that will take him.

Hahaha. Sorenson gets so much flack, probably better than Taylor on his day but at least Taylor doesn't moan! He has played 2nd best for most of his career yet he remains professional and focused.

Glad MON and all looked at him professionally and saw that work permit problem ages ago! MON either has to spend his own money on transfers or it's money from a charity for the terminally ill, cause that's the only reason I can think of for lack of signings.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill could be set to secure a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent on loan for the remainder of the season.

Sources suggest that O'Neill is looking to boost Villa's options up front and is currently in London trying to tie up a deal to take the £16.5 million striker to Villa Park with a view to a permanent move in the summer.

Bent has scored just 5 goals in 20 appearances since his summer switch from Charlton Athletic and boss Juande Ramos is believed to be prepared to cut their losses on the striker.

Jesus christ how high are peoples expectations, Darren Bent was quality at Charlton for a few years before being sold for 16 plus million. A loan deal is win win if we can get him.

MON cant win, he signs a squad player in Harewood, gets grief off people, tries to sign a quality, proven striker and gets grief of everyone!!!

Good luck MON

Steven Davis didnt last long at Fulham, been shiped off to Rangers on loan.

Its a very quiet transfer deadline day, the whole window has been rather quiet as well which is bad for us. We have a small squad and need to bring in some players but other clubs arent going to sell quality players unless they can get replacements and with very little movement happening everywhere can hardly blame MoN for not bringing in more players as clubs just arent selling :(

they should buy him a burkha, pretend he is from pakistan or iraq and then he'll be allowed into england, wots wrong wiv this f*****g country, theres 2 big issue sellers on my road, both from poland, they aint working yet they are allowed in our country so why cant someone who ISNT going to litter our streets and make us all feel guilty for living in our own country, having a job and being able to afford stuff other than a crap magazine be allowed in our country??? shit england!! id prefer carson but still, its principle....

mickey86...i had similar thoughts a few hours ago when i first heard about the work permit being turned down. I didn't comment for fear of being called racist but you are right.
Throw in the fact that America are England's allies in war and peace and then tell me why an american professional person cannot come to our country when he has earned himself an important job and well paid job. Tax etc on his high wages would be contributing to the economy etc.
Had he been an immigrant from a country where Brits are hated, he would have probably been welcomed with a house and loads of benefits.
Shockin innit. This country isn't just going to the dogs...it's already gone !

Anyway, moan over and sorry about the politics. Come on MON, give us something to be happy about before midnight.
By the way...is that true that you can't have more than two players on loan and we already have Carson and Curtis? Not even loan players coming then?

Just got this from the FA website rules and regulations regarding the registration of players.

A player may only be registered for one club at a time.
Players may be registered for a maximum of three clubs during the period from 1 July
until 30 June of the following year. During this period, the player is only eligible to play
in Official Matches for two clubs.

It looks like because, Scott Carson played games for Liverpool and Curtis for West Brom, we would not be allowed to have any more players on loan until the summer.
Therefore, it looks like anyone who MON does bring in will be on a permanent deal.

Don't think the Chimbonda thing looks likely now.
One hour to go, Spurs have just signed Gilberto from Hertha Berlin (another defender)...but they've let Stalteri and Anthony Gardner go out on loan.
Thought there may be something in it with MON reported to be in London. Also, Defoe has had a medical for Pompey and just waiting to finalise deal according to Setanta.

Hi jaf
I think i've got it embarrassingly wrong regarding the loan signings.
The bit of info i got from the FA site is concerning the amount of clubs the players are allowed to play for in a season.
I still don't know how many loan players a club are allowed to have at any one time.
Anyone else know...just interested cos' if there isn't a limit, why are we not even getting some loan signings?
Notice Routledge only given a short deal ?

Haven't seen much of the Hasselink bloke but you always hear of him scoring for Celtic.
I like this rumour...perfect back up to Carew (especially if Marlon goes to Forest as suggested on the forum just now!)

I'm typically the optimist and have also given MoN the benefit of the doubt but now is the time to start asking questions. No recognised right back at the end of the summer... no recognised rightback at the end of the winter transfer day.. "we have the smallest squad" "we will look to do a wee bit of strengthening". Do we really have the financial backing? What happens to the £5m from Cahill? Does anyone within the club seriously believe we can maintain our league position with the current squad?

I've been checking the internet whilst watching sky sports news, no doubt I'm not the only one.

I am well disappointed with the last month. I don't believe that there is not one single player that couldn't secure our team in case of injuries. I wasn't expecting much, I'm happy with what MON's done with villa's 1st team, but it takes more than 11 good players to challenge for Europe.

Gutted.

im gutted too. and i think this utterly shit january (to put it lightly) could come back to haunt the club. there is a real good feel factor around VP at the mo, but this could seriously get the fans down. and if we miss out on europe there will definately be a lot of disgruntled fans. we have a rich owner who supposedly wants us challenging at the top, a brilliant manager who wants to restore former glories and all we do is sign wayne routledge for 1.25m. why arent we trying to improve the team and the squad. the players are out there, so why arent we after them

O Neill might learn to keep his mouth shut about signings, getting thousands of peoples hopes up by saying we are going to add to the squad and then not being a good enough negotiator to get the signatures.

This has been a disastorous transfer window, abosolutely disastorous. We still have no right back and our makeshift right back's head is already in an another country. This season is going to come crashing down.

Very, very dissapointed!

I have to agree with whoever said about the work permit thing, surely that could have been identified earlier, or was it a last second panic buy? So our whole scouting network came up with wayne and that keeper? Good work lads, here, have another couple of grand!

Why do we actually need another keeper for that matter? And why does the official site have to rub it in that he aint coming??? WE KNEW 6 HOURS AGO YOU FUCKWITTS!!! JUST LIKE WE KNOW JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING TO DO WITH OUR CLUB BEFORE THOSE WANKERS ANNOUNCE IT!!!

Well, once again we all feel more than a little down about our transfer dealings or lack of! Is it time to get someone in who can deal with these things in a professional manner? And actually action things? A director of football or whatever they are called? I dont really know what they do, or what Fitzgeralds role was but fuckin hell, do we need a kick up the arse from somewhere! Every team around us has streanthened their already sizeable squads... unfortunately ours remains the same - the smallest in the prem, and without a RB.

Oh well, prepare to do all this again come the summer!

1981 we won the league with a squad of 14. We can still make it into europe. I think its wrong to have ago at the club for not signing anyone. None of us know wat was going on behind the scenes. I'm sure we went for players but either they didn't want to come or we couldn't agree fees or wages. Just because we have a rich owner doesn't mean we should be pandering to players demands. I still have faith that we will get into europe. We have 5 players in the england squad and thats amazing, so its not like we have a s#?t team. We have the quality to do and i believe we will.
