Guzan finally joins and we're off to Iceland

Friday, 01 August 08, 03:29 PM · Comments (34)

For the person that commented about me not posting about this, I apologise and I also apologise to everyone else, but I've had dinner and after last night, I've tried to take it easy today, but I'm awake now.

The news is this: Brad Guzan got his work permit and we're playing FH Hafnarfjardar from Iceland in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round.

I've never been to Iceland so I'm thinking about going. My plan is to eat some of that rotten shark they have and drink a lot of the local beer.

If anyone else is going, comment below and maybe we can meet up. The matches will take place on August 14th and 28th - not sure which one is home and away yet as I believe the clubs are trying to switch the games.

The other news is that Brad Guzan finally got his work permit and is now an Aston Villa player. He's going to be good and as long as he works hard, concentrates on the game, we really could have a very decent keeper.

Expect a more in depth article from Adam in a few days but for now, let's just welcome Brad and look forward to Iceland. Up the Villa!

Im seriously thinking of going, does anyone have any idea how much it costs to fly there?

Even with our tiny squad we have a very good cance of winning this cup.

fly to iceland
icelandexpress.com (Bruce Dickinson is one of their pilots)
icelandair.com

cheapest fares are usually just under 200 GBP (I think)

It will be played on the national stadium (Laugardalsvöllur) takes 10K.
It will be easy! (although FH is the strongest team in Iceland)
3times Icelandic champions (2004-2005 and 2006)
They beat Dunfermline in the UEFA cup 2004
FH means Fimleikafélag Hafnafjarðar = Hafnafjordur gymnastics club!!!

Villa's Icelandic Connection:
Played in an Icelandic kit from 1985-1987 (HENSON)

My mate in the US tells me this lad is special, with Brad on board, he has the perfect role model, however as a season ticket holder, i am worried about the lack of people we are bringing in...James Milner is a must, swp i would love but we need to start recruiting now...easy draw in uefa,i thought Randy was going to splash the cash...north london £17mil,..16.5mil, plus the manager in north london is a cup genius....are we realy gonna finish 6th, i know its not MON style to spend the money, but i would swap sidwell for modric any day of the week, i would not have a bad word said about the boss..but im starting to panic now..Feel the same??

Great country, Iceland. Only problem is the price of beer. As much as £10 a pint; so insolvency and inebriation run close together.

Wow, I'd absolutely love to go to Iceland for the away leg. But £300 just for a plane ticket? No chance :(

I'm with Nik, any villa fans own a boat? Iceland is so expensive to get to and to eat and drink when there. Love to go tho!

Quote from Teletext
"O'Neill seeks new additions. Martin O'Neill admits he needs to bring in several quality players - just for Aston Villa to "stand still" after last season's achievements.
O'Neill worked wonders to steer them to sixth and an Intertoto Cup spot, but after the departure of experienced players new blood is urgently required.
He said: "We're working hard to improve our squad. We need to improve to stand still, never mind anything else."

MON might have a plan after all!!!!!!

Damian, I think we should have another competition, choose which day Barry leaves. I think Tuesday, 17mil plus Finnan. Have to laugh at Rafa and the unceremonious digging of his own grave spending 19mil on Keane (who is no where near as influential on the pitch as Barry) now he has made sure the price remains around the 17-18mil mark, plus Finnan for free. The only bad thing is we dont have enough time to sign anyone and De la Red has said he wants to stay at Real. Kudos to MON though for sticking to his guns, we will get the fee we were after.

I hope MON has a plan but I really think we're doing are yearly thing f leaving things too late. We should#ve had a right back and left back cover in place in the first few weeks now we've got nothing!!!!!

Good draw for Villa - And I see both parties want to put the Villa Park tie as 2nd which would be good as well.

Looking at are waffer thin squad - The thing that really worries me is Knight & Petrov who are terrible players! But with MON system they'll both start or maybe its because we've got nobody else?

According to the Brazilian newspaper "O Dia" Ronaldo (of Real Madrid and more recently Milan, not the oily, attention seeking winker) will play in England this season..anyone for a Villa surprise or should I take more Lithium and go back to the padded room?

Id rather pay a tenner for a pint than to watch our "squad" play out a 1-1 draw against some Icelandic powerhouse........Im still shocked as to why people thought he would actually stay. He made himself clear, show some ambition. Sidwell and Friedel is ambition to avoid relegation, thats about it

A couple days ago i said villa were looking like a joke! How true has that statement become?

2 days ago villa said barry was staying
2 days later villa say the deal is still on
its pretty crazy and very shameful to the fans

I just think we have very big problems we cant even attract crappy players like kaboul, Barry leaving really worries me its not the fact that he wants to go, its the fact that HE really doesn't want to stay under any circumstances? Everything he said to the notw is starting to become true.

Its 15 days til we play against a half decent man city our record against them is poor so we need to watch out seriously

I thought to myself oh gabby scored today i might eat my words on what i think about him, then i saw the goal how lucky were we to draw with reading? Did you see how poor are defence has become! no'deal reminds me of steve coppell ''i dont want players at the club who dont want to play for us'' my answer find some that do!!!

He has been saying that stuff for a while Keef! Weve brought in Sidwell and Friedel so far, oh and Guzan.

Once again Barry makes a mockery of AVFC and, for me, has simply proved that he is an unprofessional, money grabbing idiot. My guess is he got paid fairly handsomely from NOTW, he STILL hasn't (as far as I'm aware) handed in a transfer request which would surely oil the wheels of this transfer. I am shocked as I didn't think he was at all like this.

So not only can he leave, I now think he definitely should leave. I also think he has (or will) severly dented his England future but no doubt he'll blame MON ar Capello or anyone but himself for that. I expect that when he does go he'll come out and say that the fans had been great throught all of this etc. etc. but I simply will not beleive another word he ever says again.

Gareth Barry you have reneged on a deal - twice - and do I not like that!!!

I'm very pleased about the Guzan permit and indeed the Friedel signing. I think the plan of using Friede; to brong Guzan on over the next few years is a bit of a masterstroke from MON. To me, Guzan looks not far off being a good as Friedel very soon so with them being both involved as 1 and 2 in the US national team..good mates and all that, it should be great times ahead. Both of them are big, commanding keepers...very pleased now i've had time to think logically about it.

I agree with Blitzballer...the teletext comments posted by Keef are once again lazy journalism, i fear. MON has been quoted as saying such things for weeks and weeks.

Nik...are you serious about chartering a boat you nutter? Lovely thought but i'd have to fly there man. What's the likelihood of a bmi baby going head first into an iceberg? lol

UP THE VILLA ;)
