Guzan my son: Deal agreed for American keeper

Saturday, 12 July 08, 04:24 AM · Comments (69)

Aston Villa have agreed a deal with Chivas USA for Brad Guzan.

Details of the deal are still to surface but it's probably not that much and if what has been said about him are true, it's probably a good deal for Aston Villa.

Guzan is 23 years old and the rumoured price is $1.5mn., which equates to about £750,000 - which while a lot of money to us lot, isn't exactly that much to a Premier League football club.

From what I've seen, he's decent enough and with the arrival of Paul Robinson, Brad Friedel or Robert Green a possibility in the not so distant future, Martin O'Neill looks to have his three keepers sorted for next season.

The club site are running with the headline of the deal, but not so surprisingly the page with the news is coming up with an error, so if you know more than the rumoured price, comment about it below.

Good signing that one. The deals always take a while to come (especially with Villa it feels at times) but MON's making smart moves. More of the same please!

1mill for a support keeper is nothing these days, especially if they need to be able to step up when needed. Imagine Brad gets to play in a few games and makes the add carsonesque mistake. Everyone will say, well he's only young and learning the game, but Robinson doing the same at 5mill (cos Taylors better), we'll thats just bollo**s.

I am actually very pleased with this transfer. He is the current 1st choice US goalie, and American goalkeepers have a pretty good record in the Premiership (Friedel, Keller, Howard [albeit at Everton]). Picking up a first choice international for just over a millions pounds must be applauded as a great bit of business.

martygra: I actually think that he could well be our first choice by then too.

I gurantee you that Paul Robinson won't be at VP this season. Martin O'Neill does not want him, for sure. Apparently MON wants Ben Foster on a seasons loan and after that see if Brad Guzan is ready to be number one.

Don't know enough about Guzan or the US league to comment on this signing, but glad we seem to be forming a sizable squad at last. Do not want Foster on loan, loan players don't care about the club as they know returning to their real clubs at end of season and are rarely successful whilst on loan. We shouldn't be in the situation where we need to loan players anyway, we need a number 1 so lets buy one! Robinson or Green would be fine.

just dont see the foster 1 happening and i hope it doesn't
i would like to see friedel or robinson

Guzan isn't USA's number one; Howard is our number one. But Guzan is quality, guys, he really is quality. Any American who follows MLS and the national team with tell you this.

To anyone who doubts Guzan's abilities because he comes from the American league, remember that Tim Howard, Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller and Marcus Hahnneman all played in an American league.

Also, remember that MON signed Kasey Keller at Leicester City back in the 90s. He knows a thing or two about American keepers.

Looks good on the video, but I'd be cautious of playing him as number 1 in his first season.

Also, don't forget the scene in "Mike Bassett - England Manager" when he signed what he thought was a striker on video evidence, and he ended up with the keeper that had let all the goals in. I just hope the video isn't of our new striker :-)

Ron
Ron Wrote: | 17.56BST | Jul 12, 2008

Don't see the point in Freidel as he is 37! That will be like loaning a player for a year.
Maybe Guzan has been bought to be number 1, Taylor number 2 and the young lad from the youth team stepping up to number 3.
Wouldn't suprise me

eoin1981
eoin1981 Wrote: | 17.59BST | Jul 12, 2008

The bottom line is no-one can pass judgement on him till we see him play in the epl. However all reports are encouraging and it looks a great piece of business. The same profile for an english keeper are it would probably be 10million quid. I would rather take a punt on Guzan than sign Calamity Carson or Fatty Robinson. Having said that we do need another keeper - whether its a first choice second choice or third choice doesn't really bother me.

keef
keef Wrote: | 17.59BST | Jul 12, 2008

Ron. If we were trying to sign Foster permanently then I'd agree. But we aren't. So Robinson or Green better options.

it's amazing, we sign a quality young keeper and people moan. It wouldn't matter who we signed, there would still be a bunch of fucking muppets complaining on this site. Brad Guzen is a quality young keeper, anyone that has seen him play in the MLS will know that he is a good shot stopper, commands his area well and is a 1000 times better than Carson. Beastmix have you ever seen him play? Or do you just want to stir the pot by finding some retarded video that proves nothing. I could find a video of Peter Czech howlers, would that make him a shit keeper as well?

No Taglor, not even with editing and cool music your nan would look like Pele.

Mainly because:

a) she's not black - as far as I know
b) she's not a 6 footer brazilian - again, as far as I know
c) she couldn't recreate the 1970 Brazil-Italy World Cup final in her back garden
d) she cannot jump as high as Pele at the time due to her hip
e) she doesn't have erection problems

Another "Big" signing MON can be judged on. That's what 5 or 6 MON players in the starting 11 in year 3 of a 5 year plan. MON messed up with Barry and used the media to look like the hero while the real Mr. Villa now can't get out fast enough. He will never be any more than an average manager of average clubs playing long ball football. Before you mention his record, Gordon Strachan!!
