Hangeland to fill gap at centre back?

Wednesday, 11 July 07, 02:29 AM · Comments (24)

Bill Howell has been searching websites and looking for links between current Villa players and previous team members and has come up with Norwegian Brede Hangeland.

Hangeland is currently at FC Copenhagen with former Villa player Marcus Allbäck, plays in central defence and is 6ft 4in tall. We don't know if he's mates with John Carew but they do know each other, however it is 'believed' he is a big admirer of the striker.

He's played and scored in the Champions League, wants to play in the Premiership, according to Bill Howell and the other two teams linked are, yes you know this already, Newcastle and Manchester City.

It's not that I don't like reading Bill Howell, it's just that I thought it was a newspaper, not a rumourpaper. Where is the news in what he has written about this Hangeland fella?

Rumour and speculation has it's place, mostly here and other websites, not newspapers selling news. Come on Bill, you can do so much better.

Never heard of him but as a huge sweeping generalisation, Scandinavian players tend to do well in the Premiership but above all i'd trust MON with just about everything!!

We need new signings v.soon, but they should still be quality and better than what we have and I think that is where we maybe struggling as we are not in Europe to attract the quality players from the Continent or Britain.

I'm not too bovvered at the mo, as the club keep on saying, we sure do have a "Bright Future!"

I'm surprised Everton isn't linked with him as it's usually Villa, Everton and Newcastle who get linked with players like this.

This randomly surfaced on one of the less reliable websites about a week and a half ago and now it's made it everywhere. Just shows you how easy it is to spread a rumour.

Anyone remember Jan Koller and Sunderland? That was awesome.

There is no gap at centre back?? There is more talk today that ridgewell may be on his way. That leaves us with Mellberg, cahill and laursen (whom is more injury prone than darren Anderton). I would say based on this there is a clear gap at centre back? I know Bouma and Delaney could cover, but if we are going to be serious about building a decent squad we need a minimum of 4 solid, fit centre back who specialise in that position.

i think were doing it right in the past i feel we have bought players just for the sake of it,rather make sure they are the right players the euro thing will be a problem perhaps that is why MON seems to be concerntrating on younger players and from what i have read we have some accademy players on fringes as i have said before dont beleive MON would allow players to go with some kind of back up

Im a Norwegian Villa fan, and I would be *very* happy if Villa were to sign Hangeland.
He is immense. In addition to his height, he has decent technique and good speed. In every game Ive seen him, both on club and national level, he is very calm in every action he does. Never panics.

If Villa gets Hangeland, we get a top European defender that holds high Premiership standard

He does talk some rubbish doesn't he old Bill.
Apparently Ridgewell is leaving too, yes, according to Bill Howell.
I don't know who he is but if he's at Villa Park come September 1st, good luck to him.

I have seen Hangeland play both for Viking (Norwegian Premiership), and the national team. If this rumour has any truth to it, he would represent excellent value for money. FC København has put a pricetag of ca. £3mill.

I took the liberty to quote ueafa.com:

Hangeland hailed
John Carew scored twice against Hungary to earn the coach's praise but Hareide also had fond words for central defender Brede Hangeland. "I have always believed in John and knew he would deliver goals," he said. "I'm very happy for him. Brede has grown in stature since his move to FC København and today he showed qualities that reminded me of players like Rune Bratseth and Henning Berg, both legends when it comes to Norway centre halves."

I think that Villa are playing their cards SO close to their chests that even newspaper writers are having to go along with rumours and speculation cos there's nothing else to report on regarding Villa! It's frustrating isn't it!?
I think it's just as lots of people have said before, we've just got to trust MON and the professionals we have in charge now.... I hope we get some more news from the club soon though. All this waiting is becoming quite dull.

I agree, I have waisted so much time since the end of the season checking all sources of news for new Villa signings. I am bored now and after the month long effort to get NRC in which happened to send my hair grey, I just would like to see us being linked with some more decent players right now.
We should still have this reported £30 mill to spend as we have recouped most of NRC with the players we have sold. Also our wage bill must be one of the lowest in the Premiership at the minute, JPA was on a big salary, so was Sutton and Hendrie. There is £100k a week we have saved on those 3 players.
Lets get some of that MBNA money spent.

My faith in the new regime is beginning to waiver no matter how hard I try to prevent it. We are 4 weeks from the beginning of the season and I really doubt that we have suprises up our sleeves. I know that MON is playing his cards close to his chest but if he had anything lined up he would have shown his hand before preseason training. Plus, the press at least get a sniff of the signings. We are only linked with defoe, SWP and a defender - this is not enough to fill the void that has left. Anybody think the sneijder deal is likely or was it just paper talk?? I hope I am wrong

Hangeland is a player iv heard off but a player i havent seen play so cant really comment on him i have read a few storys about him tho and there all good and positive i would like to see 6 more new faces 1 goalkeeper 2 defenders 2 midfielders and 1 more striker i think that then would cover us for the whole season

Martin O Neill_New villa

who is going to replace sutton because with angel and sutton gone we are light on strikers now so we need to start doing something soon. teams like man city, fulham, and west ham have been busy adding to there squads plus they all finished below us and we have been more busy getting rid of players than getting them in.come on mon start giving the fans something to cheer about before the season starts.would definitly like to see swp and defoe at villa for the start of the new season.

im still scrathing my head wondering why we need a centre back with laursen oozing class and mellbergs consistancy we are good in this position! and in the sub department with cahill we have a great, great player in the making!!!one day england international!!!

AV4EVER Wrote: | 01.57BST | Jul 13, 2007

Not seen or heard anything of this man but a good centre half would be a great acquisition, although i think cahill will be a future England international, sometimes i believe when you are playing the big boys you need a experienced and mature head to cope with the pressure. As for Ridgewell i think he could do a Paul Warhurst & revert to upfront, mad as it sounds he has scored a few goals going up from the back & has had a few near misses. Maybe i'm just going mental due to the lack of signings.

villan93ant
villan93ant Wrote: | 17.49BST | Jul 15, 2007

well we could do with another big center back because his height will be another advantage at the back and who knows if laursen will get injured again well then we havent got much experience at the back and playing against liverpool with new boy torres it will be hard without any experience.
