Has Craig Gordon indicated he wants a move to the Premier League?

Monday, 18 June 07, 12:15 PM · Comments (13)

We told you about Bruno Alves before anyone and Daniel Guiza but this one is old, but according to a source, it's as good as done.

According to this source, Aston Villa were waiting for a public declaration from Craig Gordon that he wanted to ply his trade in the Premier League next season. Apparently this came on Saturday although I never saw it. See how rumours get started?

Anyway, after the public declaration I've been told that a bid will be placed with Hearts and I'm also told it will be accepted. Martin O'Neill then expects to meet with the player or 'probably just his agent' by the end of next week to sort it all out.

Now, this email could have been prompted on the back of the Thomas Sorensen article earlier or it could have just been a coincidence, either way, Craig Gordon is, in my humble opinion and after seeing him play against Italy recently, a better keeper than the one we've got.

Will he come though? It is also thought that Manchester United and Arsenal have shown an interest in the player. Does the pull of Aston Villa or probably more so, Martin O'Neill attract the player over the chance of playing Champions League football? I'm not entirely convinced myself but we'll soon find out as the email did say a bid would be put in soon.

Rumour likelihood: I quite like this one and if I was to score it out of five I'd give it a four. Definitely more chance that this happens over our previous incumbent ever getting a job in football management again.

I'd like to see him in claret and blue but he's not going to come to Villa if one of the big four go in for him.

However, I think Man Utd are happy with Van der Saar and Foster and Arsenal have just signed that Polish keeper so I don't think it's a priority for them. Liverpool are the only ones in the top four who might want him.

I think we've got more important positions that need sorting out before worrying about Sorenson, in the main he been steady over the past few years, yes he does have his faults but then name a PL GK that doesn't. Also, Damien, I think you can drop the digs at O'leary now it getting boring, he's long gone, the club have moved on, so should you.

Of course if the top 4 went in for him they'd get him over us, but as someone said, man utd have van der sar, arse just signed the polish keeper who intends to be no 1 there, liverpool have reina, chelski have cezh.. We have MON factor to consider too, i'd say there's a strong chance we could get him. Sorensen isn't going to be the keeper we need to maintain a CL/EC push.

Following on from Luke' comments (where I agree entirely), why would Craig Gordon move to Liverpool to play second fiddle to Pepe. As for Chelsea, we know they have two top quality keepers so I guess it'll have to be second tier for him. If he does arrive at the Villa, I only hope it doesn't start Frank Skinner off again talking about Scottish keepers!!

i think you could cancel out arsenal man utd and chealsea .. but liverpool you can cancel out and you cant .. the fact i dont think gordon would go there is because didnt they just sign reina a new extended contract ?? if so he will be no 1 there for a long time .. this will prob scare gordon off and considering we have mon i think the pendulum swings our way ..

Liverpool don't need, they've got Carson(except he might be going) and Reina, both top notch 'keepers.
I can't see us beating a top 8 team to him but none of them have shown more than 'interest' we've been linked with him since June 1st and have even had links of watching his games and training. So i reckon we're close on the deal! Although, if he costs £10mn. i wouldn't be too happy to see other key areas un-strengthened due to lack of funds

It seems to me that we and a.n. other team are linked with 'decent' players (Smith, Gordon, Bellamy, Dutch guy?) and nothing happens. Then weeks later 5 or 6 teams are interested in the same targets. Not sure if we should get in quick before anyone else can or if the current links are not real and the genuine targets are being discussed in private???

Why, whenever we are linked with players, we are closely followed by Spurs??!!! do they have no scouts, or does Jol just lack any judgement? This has been going on for quite a while now, the latest targets being Drenthe, Sneijder and Gordon? Anytime I pick up the paper to read the football columns and see we are linked with someone, i only have to skim over the next few lines to see the word "Spurs"! I have every faith in MON but I just cant see Drenthe joining Us ahead of Spurs with their strong Dutch connection! I just Hope Bouma can have a word in his ear! Has anyone else been watching the U-21's? Drenthe looks like a very classy player, but I would love to c O'Neill interested in De Ridder, His passing is unreal, a young Patrick Berger in my eyes!

I want a right back, a centre half, NRC, SWP, and a striker, if we have any money left then Gordon would be perfect!

We need a new goalie as Taylor looks set to move on and Sorensen is not getting any younger. I think Gordon would be a great signing for us.
