Have the bluenoses done us a favour?

Thursday, 18 January 07, 04:48 AM · Comments (7)

Well I was amazed at the result last night I have to say; it?s not often a Premiership team gets beaten 5-1 at home, let alone to a Championship team.

The Newcastle fans must feel humiliated and let down by their players because I know I certainly would.

However, is this a blessing in disguise for us? We?ve lost 2 and drawn 1 of the last 3 games but they were against Chelsea and Man Utd so I imagine the Geordies will be thoroughly depressed. They?ve got a tricky game at home to West Ham on Saturday and hopefully this battering of confidence will do us a favour when we head up to St James? Park on the 31st of January.

We should beat Watford (if we don?t we?re in trouble) and a win against Newcastle would see us give a ?safety zone? between us and the relegation battlers.

Nobody is going to want to come to a team that nearly got relegated, even if Martin O?Neill is in charge. We could do with a couple of decent players now at least but we?ve got to perform well over the remainder of the season to bring a few in when the summer transfer window opens.

February sees us take on West Ham and Arsenal at home with a trip to Reading in between. We could pick up anything between 4 and 7 points here but realistically I think 4 because Arsenal are beginning to play like the Arsenal we know and Reading are looking fairly solid although Kevin Doyle?s injury might limit their firepower.

March sees us away to Fulham and home to Liverpool and Everton. I doubt we?ll beat Liverpool but a draw is possible and the other two should bring us 4-6 points.

April will be make or break for us if we haven?t performed up until then; we?ve got Blackburn (a), Wigan (h), Boro (a), Pompey (h) and Man City (a). We should win both home games and get at least a point in each away game if not a win or two. We could get anything from 7-11 points but realistically we should budget for 8 as one of them is bound to beat us at their ground.

May leaves us with Sheffield United at home and Bolton away. I expect we?ll beat Sheff Utd but Bolton will be tricky. A point would make me happy but we?ll see.

That?s not too bad, we?ve played most of the big boys and we could still get a top half finish. Beating Watford on Saturday is key and then a result at Newcastle will kick start the second half of the season. Once we?re out of this slump I think confidence will return. The lads will be aware that the tail end of this slump has been against the top two and we?ve not done badly. Some teams have got a worse run coming than us. A couple of buys will help us and I think the future isn?t looking too gloomy for us.

Up the Villa!

its all very well saying the points you think we should get .

if we look at it like that then we should of beat spurs at home , boro at home , fulham at home , bolton at home sheffield utd away, watford away. westham away and charlton away. cus we played the majority of them while in a good run. thats 24 points.

i am very concerned as we have no spark in midfield or anyone up front who looks capable of putting away a half chance, plus we are not realistically being linked with players of quality in the window, all be it ashley young, who at 9 million is bad business for an unproven kid.

with teams like watford scrapping for survival i cannot see a home win on the cards at all this weekend

Should we get Moore and Laursen back it will certainly help our cause, but you are right- we should've beaten some of those teams the first time around.

We need to bring some players in but as I've just read at Vital Villa, most transfer do take place in the last week of the window and there's good evidence there to back it up.

Link is in my previous article in the comments section. It's worth checking out.

laursen only got 45 in the reserves and i dont know about moore.

i am not a fan of stats, i like to look at the big picture . every time o'neil speaks out its always stuff like " dont get carried away " " we are trying our best " etc and its depressing. how about he comes out and says " we got 4 bids logged at the moment" at least then we will all know
you look at west ham, relegation zone, and they sign quality like boa morte, who, for our 433 formation would have been awesome on the left, but we dont even look at him, they sign lucas neil, we get a man u kid on loan ??

it isn't boding well at all. i am very unhappy

We will do well to gat a win but cant see it happening,we are slow at the back not creative enough in midfield and our forwards couldnt score in a brothell. The most likely outcome is another draw, and whats the odds on young scoring agains us??.A top half finish is beyond us ,i just hope we can bring in some top top players next season to compensatefor yet another woefull season

Come on everyone!!!
All I seem to read here and on other websites is negative views. Im not saying im not looking every hour to see if there is any news coming out of VP, but hey things could be so much worse!!! We could already be in the fizzy pop league, we could still have big bad Doug and Mr O'Nearly got us relegated!!!

I think next week we may see some movement, if it happens..great, if not forget about it and get on with supporting the club we all clearly love.

I for one will be at the Watford game, lets prove to everyone how much faith we have in the manager and the players we already have!!

i cannot see us getting a win, we showed against charlton and sheffield utd that when these teams want it more that they are too much for us in tearms of committment and endeavour .

watford typify this, they are gritty and determined and i feel that will overcome us on saturday

I'm with you on this one DJ. There is to much negativity brewing up. We have a whole 13 days till the close of the transfer window & am sure we will add to our (Quote O' Dreary)small squad. I don't think for one minute that we will be beaten on Saturday by a struggling Watford team. With a full Villa Park behind them why can't we climb back up the table?? I'm not saying we will qualify for Europe, but as stated in a previous post by myself try and qualify for the Intertoto. It's not beyond us.

Get down to Villa Park Saturday and show your support

Come on you Villa boys!!!
