Well, moments after putting the Emile Heskey deal to bed yesterday, Martin O'Neill was asked about Michael Owen and he didn't dismiss it out of hand or laugh it off.
It was picked up yesterday by someone although I have to admit that I just thought it pure speculation on the part of whoever asked the question but it is all over the web today and in a few papers.
We all know how Martin O'Neill likes to do his business and if a name is mentioned and it's completely made up or something that isn't going to happen, then he'll have no problem saying that. However, we were not sitting there and we don't know how the question was asked, but you'd have thought however it was asked, Martin O'Neill knew what was going to be in the papers today.
Still, Owen scores goals in his sleep and if he's fit there are not that many better and we know that Owen and Heskey have a great understanding and both will be looking to score goals next season especially with the World Cup only 502 days away.
Still, it is speculation, nothing more nothing less and as such it's filed in that section for things like this.
For today, we have just a few hours to go until the FA Cup match at Doncaster, so I'm going to get my breakfast in me and go have a little fun before the serious business of getting into the fifth round for the second time in nine seasons is done.
Any more rumours that I've missed, please add them below and we'll take a look at them in the pre-match build up post which will be going live about an hour or so before kick off.

Chuffed about Heskey - Wouldn't mind Owen at all but his wages would disrupt things, anyone know the cap we have at the moment? Want to give Gabby more time anyway...
Know all about these Upson rumours, but not sure about Cuellar and Davies being able to play together... Come on Freddie, you've been gone long enough... (First!!!)
Are we still after a defender, to cover for Laurson? Still like Upson if we can prize him away from West Ham
Bugger it... one day I tell you, one day...
Well with heskey in, talks of owen too, does that mean carew and marlon are on there way?
Have we bought Heskey as cover for Carew? Would buying Owen then relegate Agbonlahor to a bench warmer? I think that we only need 3 strikers (with Delfouneso as the 4th) and I think that we've got the striker situation sorted for the remainder of the season. IMO, money would be better spent on cover for the two wingers (N'Zogbia, Barnes, Kightley) and another full back (Richards, Lescott deployed as a left-back), rather than another striker. HOWEVER, there is a reason why I am not a premiership manager and MON is: so I'm just going to see what happens over the next few days.UTV
is todays game on anywhere
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with Carew ? Any rumours?
Good Job ! O'Neil
Heskey has quality and can sattle very fast.
Also add the physical up front during Carew not fully fit.
I would love to see another winger (like Bentley) and another Full Back (G. Johnson). The youth like Jack Collison from West Ham is quit talent
Heskey and Owen would be brilliant but I'd always be waiting for Owen to be crocked.
the arrival of heskey means more hoofball at villa park in the coming months!!
Owen is nothing but a shadow of his brilliant best. Signing cover at the back has become a big focus now....i think we should give City around 20mil and take Richards, Johnson and Sturridge....
Fkin Bold Geek, why does he have the picture with the blond syrup before summing up & calling Ashley a Coward. Tosser
As for Owen at least he is the sort of partner that could playwith him.
Oh my god what a hand over, my head feels like it's been crushed by a vise! While knocking back far too much alcohol last night I was moaning about the Heskey signing, thinking it doesn't show enough ambition, lacking on quality etc etc etc. However, maybe I was a bit quick to judge. The massive expectations and high hopes we all have for our great club has resulted in a seasoned, experienced England International being muted as a dissapointing signing, fantastic! Heskey is a player O'Neil obviously rates highly and beleives he can improve us, who am I to argue with that. I say we all give him a chance to prove his worth before jumping on his back. At very least he offers us something lacking recently, true quality cover for big JC. 1 more signing this window, preferably an attacking creative midfielder maybe Ibagaza, last season has most assists in La Liga for Mallorca, moved to Villarreal in the summer but has only played 4 times for them, worth a punt maybe but is a bit old 32?
YES WE CAN
Gotta say loving this, was very happy that Heskey signed, would absolutely be in dream land to land Owen as well. Heskey was good enough as it came on my birthday! so rounded off a quality day!
Easily pleased or what? As for yes we can, it's obama's mantra not a football club
Talk about jumping on a bandwagon and unoriginality, I think we should have our own chant not steal but then most of the morons on here can't think for themselves anyway, bahhh baaaah baah
Think Heskey and Gabby could make a quality partnership! We don't need Owen. The budget needed to cover his hosital treatment would be higher that his astronomical wages! We should keep all we have till the summer to cover all competitions, then if we make CL we can clear out the dross (Saliffoo, Marlon, Shorey) and bring in some class players in their prime! Cover for Martin and Ashley would be good (Richards/Upson, Downing/Lennon) and being fron Leeds (sorry) i've seen a lot of Delph who would be well worth a punt!
As for yes we can, what does it even mean? to win? well no chance so it must be to finish 4th, talk about lowering your expectations
The last time the Villa bought an ex-Birmingham centre forward we went on to win the league and the following season the European cup. That forward being Peter Withe.
I've got a good feeling about all this.
We dont need another Stricker we need a left back and a back up winger. Simple!
Rumour is that MON won't be at the game today, he's looking at a player somewhere else....... At last movement in the transfer market!
i heard the game was on setanta ireland ive jsut looked on my sky channel 423 or near that. and they ahve doncaster v aston villa live. where will show that game the holte perhaps?
Taglor,
I think "Yes We Can" is the original mantra of Bob The Builder you'll find.
What's the point in supporting a club if you can't be optimistic about what you could achieve. We've played crap for 6 weeks and yet kept on winning. I happen to think we've just come through our bad patch of the season. With Heskey on board, 3 points behind the leaders with 16 games to go we should be aiming for the title!! YES WE CAN
Sorry Mlockey89 think your wrong there.
Unless i'm mistaken, wasn't chris sutton a blue before joining villa!?
Reply to simon:
Ya the game is on Setanta Ireland. A lot of the irish pubs in london have this channel not sure about other parts of the uk.
Reply to roundabout kevin:
What about Chris Sutton?
Taglor: "yes we can" - hopefully lose you - as a Villa "fan".
I think the 'chant' was formed in response to your comments following the last transfer window Sir taglor. You were wondering whether we'd be able to stay in the Premiership with the crap that we'd signed. So.......
Yes we can...... avoid relegation this season. (unlike spuds who I think YOU said were showing PROPER ambition last summer)
heskey will be the main striker with jc warming tne bench thats if jc has a career at villa after the summer soething still not right there
Reply to maccamanaman:
Cheers fella, didn't think it was on, just checked Sky 430 and there it is - best I go out for a pub lunch and get some beers in
Owen, yes and I think injuries are also linked to the club you are at - he was failry injury free at Liverpool wasn't he? I think the Villa "team" look after players well, which is why we don't seem to get too many day to day injuries (obviously on field ones are unavoidable) - I think the players are well conditioned at Villa.
Well said NAN,
taglor the fickle supporter. When most of us kept the faith, you deserted the ship like the proverbial rat. We were 350-1 at the start of the season because 'experts'( unlike yourself 0predicted that we shouldn't come remotely close to winning the league.
MON has defied the experts with his incedible 'talent' (unlike yourself)in assembling a team capable of beating anyone. We should be immensely proud of his achievements thus far, whether we finish 1st or 6th. We are progressing nicely and don't need part time supporters like you slagging him off cos he hasn't bought BENTLEY or KEANE.
In essence someone like you, who knows naff all about naff all need to stick to your words and run off to support your local coneheads football team, and not interfere with us real fans.
LMAO I only said that to wind you up, job done Mr Predictables. ROFL
Whereas posting shite in an attempt to provoke is highly unpredictable behaviour on your part.
Reply to roundabout kevin:
not true we recently signed sutton and still won bugger all

YES HE CAN!
LOL it took about 3 posts to get off the main topic.
Onto the main topic, thought £3.5mill was a bit much for a player in his last six months of his contract but I'm positive that he will be good signing... And who knows, may be the difference in us finishing 3rd or 6th ? Maybe even 1st ?
Onto Owen, I think he'd be a great signing. His wage is the biggest issue but I'm sure Gabby would learn a lot from him and with 4 quality strikers plus Fonz I think it would give MON some great options off the bench too. We could change a game when in need of pace, goals, holding it up, and the like...
And taglor, I'm sure yur plan was to ''wind us up'' but what's the point? I mean, I'm all for banter but yu must draw the line somewhere. I can wind yu up quite easily but at the end of the day we are supposed to be supporting Villa... I never knew supporting yur team consisted of calling yur fellow fans fickle, stupid, or whatever phrases yu may have used. That's not true support, nor is it being much of a man.
And don't think I've forgotten what yu posted earlier in the year... Ignorance is a funny thing... Hopefully yu will get pegged back a couple of rows when Villa finish in the top4.
YES WE CAN!
Reply to Gee:
Good shout.Upson is a underated talented english centre back.He is 29 now a regular with england with 22 caps.He has matured into a dominating leader of the back line and could help long term in the Villa back 4.Hammers need cash despartely and we might be able to pick him cheaply. We love Lescott but Everton would never sell him to us as we are rivals for top 4 position. I really fancy Heskey and Gabby together, with Gabby feeding off Heskey I am sure he will get many more goals this season.
Reply to ronvilla:
we have 3 strickers now yes owen would be a good signing, but we need to get some defence in as back up. Shorey has to go to make room for say two more defenders, Hopefully doing that will kick Zat up the ars to start working hard.
what you think Ronvilla ?
Also a new MC would be nice to get siddaz working for his position two, but i think up front is prob the best we have. Mid and Def need some players that can challenge for 1st team starts.
Reply to villa_biker:
I Reckon JC is off tbh, yes he has his back but i just think he cant settle. I hope im worng but he seems like he doesnt want to come back incase he disappoints us because we have cam on so much since he played.

Come on jonny boy lol get yu act together, if not pee off so we have more budget to get some fit players
Lads I just checked on the Setanta website and unless you live in ireland (or know a pub with an irish sky card
) you won't be able to see the game. They haven't got broadcasting rights to show 3pm games in the uk.
Damian do you no any other rumours about owen or anyone else? because the papers and stuff only focus on the top 3 (notice i dropped ars
there going to 5th lol) anyways i just need some thing to chew on over my beloved villa
Mail me if you like mlockey@live.co.uk
I certainly thing he is trying to hook Owen, but I don't understand it.

Try and think how much Gabby is going to learn from him injured or not.
Just a couple of examples
Ian Rush at end of his career helped a young Robbie Fowler take the premiership by storm
Robbie Fowler once he had lost that yard of pace and desire to play he helped turn a lighting fast forward into one of the most feared goal scorers in the world. Also he is going to score goals when he is fit and the idea of the game is to out score your opponents.
DOES THAT HELP YOU UNDERSTAND?
Richards from man city would be a great buy if there is any chance of him moving for especially for 5 mill (which i doubt) we should get in there especially with He-man being out for a while. MON would make him great, what do you fellas reckon??
My fear is that we are not a big enough club YET to put England players on the bench.
If we signed Owen, surely he and Heskey would start up front when fit? Is Gabby then in midfield or on the bench? I believe if he was on the bench for the big games between now and the end of the season he would go. Don't tell me that they're going to be rotated because I think a young lad like Gabby needs to play to learn his craft.
This issue of who is on the bench is the vital deciding factor that MON has to grapple with when making signings.

donny rovers v aston villa (hopefully)
Bill Howell is a C*nt.
Alreet lads and lasses....Not a Villa fan but come in peace....
Michael Owen is passed his best and would be a massive mistake by ONeil if he brought him in....not because he is not a good player, he is but the wages he would command could be used much better else where....Heskey, Carew, Agbonglahor (spelling)and Delfuonso (you know who I mean..lol) are all quality players and a couple of them will only get better and better....
Once Owen is being paid 100k per week, how long before the Gabby's and Youngs want parity?
By all means think big, but Owen is not what Villa need...Go spend the money on a younger model...once you have made the champions league you will have no problem attracting the top players
Really hope Villa go and make the top 4 this season...sick of the same old same old at the top...
All the best for the rest of the season lads
Don't get me wrong I really like Owen, I'm just not sure how he fits in. It is lazy when people say (not you Villadam) 'just sign them cos they're good' but have not thought about the further implications for team formation, subs, sales etc.
When I've asked before people have said that's MON's job!!
So they talk like wannabe Abramovich's......
'Here we are boss these are the wonderful, expensive players I have signed for you. They looked great on Youtube. Now fit them into your team and make us win.' Bollocks
Has anyone got a link to enable me to watch the game today online. Thankyou .
above altan post 50
Nan agree with what your saying totally, but rotating is something that has to happen, we are competing in 3 comps at the moment and we have a realistic chance of winning any of them or all of them. To go with this I would assume Harewood would be leaving, so that leaves us with 4 international strikers and the young Fonz. Now out of those 4 main strikers 2 are injury prone, so realistically we are very rarely going to have 4 fit strikers for it to be a big problem of keeping egos in check. Also if you look at that group of strikers apart from Gabby(and The Fonz) they have all played in rotating squads throughout there careers so it will be something they are used too. Finally Nan as you're the one who started the "YES WE CAN" so I would of thought that you would understand the need to start thinking like a top 4 team.

Reply to Nan_was_a_fan:
I am not saying sign him because he is good I would of thought that is an obvious reason. The reason I think this would be a great signing is because of what the likes of Gabby and the Fonz are going to learn from him. This goes for simple things like utilizing your strike partner, positioning on set plays, shooting techniques and the list goes on and on. I am not just thinking of what Owen will bring to us on the pitch but what he will bring to the training ground.

Taglor, not only are you negative, your also thick as shit. You've contradicted yourself in one sentence - you say we have no chance of winning so "yes we can" must mean coming 4th which is lowering expectations. But you are the one who has said this not anyone else
Don't know why I bother responding though as everyone can see what a knobba you are
Villadan, this is very odd. You and I disagree but are having a well reasoned discussion on the issue which may well lead to enlightened further understanding on both sides.
I think we're on the wrong blog.
Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens with gambling Welsh traitor eh?

Villadam, I think the point you are missing is that owen doesn't see himself as a tutor yet. He still wants to play week in week out and search to get back in the England squad.
I'd like to think if he came to villa he'd be on the bench, because as a prospect for villa, gabby is a much more promising one.
For me - Heskey, Gabby, Carew and young del boy is a pretty good front line. If I added another player it would be another young protege, not a third old experienced head.

Too right, marcus - the optimism usually wears off by the time the actual season gets in the way so let's make the most of it and spur the team on to its maximum potential, whatever that turns out being.
Reply to Ruts:
Ruts, would be interesting to know your allegiance but I like your post. All the best to you - unless you support one of our main rivals
I agree on Owen. I have been a massive fan of his through his career and only until last season have I started to doubt his value to England, albeit I'd be happy to see hima round the squad, keep his tail up.
I take Nan's point too that we wouldn't want the consequence to be Gabby on the bench.
For me, I take the positives that it's not ridiculous that we are linked with him, bank that confidence and say we move on to other areas, especially this window - and for other areas of the team.
Reply to SidCowanslovechild:
You are so eloquent, maybe you should look at yourself first and then maybe buy a dictionary to help educate yourself out of your council flat?
Heskey is a great buy to support the team, but how many would play him over Carew? With Carew missing for so long i perhaps would, and agree heskey and Gabby could be great partnership very much in the owen heskey mould. Who knows it may even be the England strike duo in 2010. So saying this we have a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2. So whats it to be and who gets dropped?
I would love to see Owen at Villa Park. Although he maybe not quite the player he used to be he's still shown that he's got the finishing skills that I beleive are still missing in out team.
With regards to his standing in the way of players like Agbonlohor and Delafonsou in terms of 1st team action I think that he would be a great mentour for both the players, I think he would provide top class competition between the players and as he's been fairly injury prone he's not going to keep either player out of the team long.
I think 'Owen' is still a big name that excites and although I dont think we should blow the wage structure out of the water for him. I do think we should do everything possible to get him top Villa this month.
Champions league here we come!....(with or without Owen)

i didnt want us to get heskey but now hes here i hope he proves me wrong
