Huge sums of cash available in the summer

Thursday, 22 March 07, 03:22 AM · Comments (5)

First off this is from the Daily Star and along with the news that Martin O'Neill is getting £30mn. he will also be going after Craig Bellamy, David Nugent and Steve Sidwell.

While I like the players mentioned, especially Nugent, I'm actually part of that small group of believers that Randy Lerner isn't giving budgets but setting targets.

It's not that I don't think £30mn. is a lot of cash, as it is, I just think that £30mn. isn't as much cash as it used to be in football and if Mr Lerner wants to achieve anything with Aston Villa I'm afraid he's going to have to spend a lot more cash than that.

Behaviour breeds behaviour and while I think we need players like Nugent and maybe even Sidwell I'd much rather seeing us go after players with a proven ability, or maybe that's just more experience, or those who might even be considered a level above the likes of Sidwell and Nugent.

Money will be spent, probably more than £30mn. and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the three mentioned were bid for but if we are going to improve on this season it's almost as if we need six or seven new players and for that it's a lot more cash.

I'd like to see these players come in, but only as part of a group of quality players coming to the squad. We need a good mix of developing youth and experience top-flight players, like Young and Carew.

I'd take all 3 as long as there's more to come otherwise concentrate on some 'better' players.

£30M? It'll be Dougonomics - to include signing on fees etc, you watch...
As you rightly say, it HAS to be a lot more if we are serious about competing with Arsenal, Liverplop, ManUre, Chelsea etc, rather than Bolt-on.

I think we have to be realistic and speak about evolution rather than revolution. World class players will want a guarantee of Champions League football. I think that the job for 2007-8 will be to challenge for a Top 6/7 finish and a UEFA Cup place: with that degree of improvement and the new training ground complete, we would be well set to take on the next squad turnover, which would see us compete for the biggest names and the Champions League places.
I think Bellamy, Sidwell and Nugent are just the right sort of players to help us move back into the Top 7, especially when combined with Bardsley, Petrov, Young, Carew and Maloney.
It wouldn't be a bad squad strengthening over 12 months - and it would also represent investment in the team of not far off £50m.
I think we also need to be confident - as Damian hints - that O'Neill is making clear what he needs rather than Lerner setting barriers.

30M sorry but the article the other week from MON said he isnt going to sit waiting for the youth to grow up otherwise the youth we have now would be perfect in a few years to challenge for top 6, But he said he wants success now.

So with that in mind, Bardsley need to be brought for the future of our club, but for now we need an even better RB, abit like Bouma's defensive side but combined with Luke Young's running up the wings.

We also need a better partner for Mellberg, Cahill and Ridgewell will probably pair with each other for England in afew years time but for now we need someone like Sol Campbell maybe knock 1 or 2 years off him and it would be perfect as for when he retires along with Mellberg Cahill and Ridgewell will be up for the job to secure champions league football.

Left Back, i think this position is fine with Bouma as the top man, and Barry as a cover if really needed, But we need Cover and its got to be that good to challenge Bouma for his place.

Right Wing, Ok so we have Young, Agbonlahor, Maloney, Moore, Petrov if really needed, But i feel we need class, there are stars all over Europe waiting to be found and they are cheap we need to find one of these, Great creative play, makes runs, work rate at the peak you know what im getting at.

DM/CM McCann is underrated but he is also a one trick pony, Ozzy looks good f or the future to take him over but how long do we have to wait to harvest from him ? I do believe he has the talent and belief to be the next Viera but for now we need a rock solid DM that will hold the line and let Petrov/new player, Barry, Gabby, Young, Carew attack and not have to worry so much if theres a big counter attack coming and be sloppy.

Petrov Petrov Petrov what are we going to do with you, First off his been pretty much shite, he showed promise at the start of the season and was unlucky to not score afew one big moment was hitting the cross bar acouple of tmes against west ham and Anton clearing his chip off the line, Apart of me thinks we need to cut our losses the other says we need to give him another season but at the same time bring in a class player to fight with his place, i mean look at Drogba last season he was dire i wouldnt even of traded Moore for him, now his the best striker in the premiership.

LM-Barry-Sorted, Although im unsure if Maloney is the right guy to give him pressure and at the same time not be good enough to take his place.

Strikers Ok we have Maloney, Moore, Agbonlahor, Young, Angel, Carew, Sutton, Sutton will probably go with his eye vision not so good maybe even retire. Angel looks like he is heading out of the door, reports say Newcastle, or to River plate, but lets remember Arsenal went in for him last summer YYEESSSS how many knew that, they also went in for him in 2004 with him playing some fantastic football would a big move to Arsenal Champions League football be enough to recover his form we all saw in 2003 ? Then you have Nathan Delfouneso 16 in the England under 16's looks FANTASTIC looks to me to be the next big thing to hit England reminds me abit of Owen when he was 17/18.

So if we got rid of Sutton, Angel and brought in Bellamy and Nugent we would have 7 players that want first team football, Nugent, Young, Agbonlahor, Moore are probably all good enough for England if Fizzy pop class Walcott and get in, I do think Bellamy is good and he didnt cause a problem up at Celtic but do we really need him ? I would much more prefer Saviola as he looks like he will head out of Barca or Eidur Gudjohnsen Or even BOTH. But we are missing the classy finishing long range goals, and even 1 2 1 passes.

Let's not forget the Keeper, is Sorro good enough ? I mean can anyone remember the Newcastle match ? i wish i could forget it, they had 4 shots 4 SHOTS and they were poor at that, and all he managed was one save the rest were goal goal goal, He makes too many mistakes then when he makes a world class save the next match we forgive him, i'm sorry but this has happend too much for my liking, He will want first team action but we would need him for cover, i think Boruc from Celtic is probably playing the best football in British football fight now and even Arsenal are on his heels, But we do have the Celtic factor if it hurts me to say it. There is also Ben Foster, he looks a great player for the future and even now, even if that lob from Robinson made me cringe.

So after all that is 30m good enough ???

we need youth nd experiance nd we need a RM gabbys doin alright atm but his looking tired now maybe we could spend £8mill on SWP or someone with more experiance and we need about £50mill to spend in summer and give them another season to see if its all workin proply then we should be in top 6 the season after, we could do with another CB STRx2 RM LM(cover)GK CM DM RB LB lol a hole nnew team, jus think about how many of our squad is capable of starting for man u, arsenal or Chelsea?
