I don't want Hendrie to leave

Monday, 05 December 05, 12:14 PM · Comments (0)

I never thought I'd say this but I don't want Hendrie to leave Aston Villa.

Reports have started up again that Wolves will be taking the player in January and I think it would be a mistake.

We saw on Saturday that he is Aston Villa just by his work ethic and if Gavin McCann hadn't scored many would be agreeing with when I say I'd rather have Hendrie start ahead of McCann.

Gavin McCann is a defensive midfielder whereas Hendrie is more of an attacking midfielder but you don't win matches defending.

I think we can all agree for now that Davis should start if he is fit so our central midfield options are McCann, Hendrie, Bakke or Djemba Djemba. It looks as if Djemba Djemba is off after his outburst against the manager and Bakke is only with us until January, although this could be extended if Djemba Djemba does go to Leeds in January but the choice right now is between Hendrie and McCann.

The thing is O'Leary loves McCann and he considers him first choice even if the player is struggling with an injury but for me Lee Hendrie has more bite, more to offer going forward and more reason to give that extra 5%.

Most notably for me is Hendrie likes to play the ball along the ground and when he came on for Villa against Liverpool looked our best player for a the few minutes he was allowed. He created space and passed well - without him I don't see who we have in central midfield that can play with Davis and support the player going forward and back.

Only my thoughts but I think letting Hendrie go would be a mistake.
