I'd love a Shaun Wright-Phillips right about now, the funk soul brother

Friday, 30 May 08, 10:24 AM · Comments (49)

According to the Express and Star, we're after Shaun Wright-Phillips and you know what, I'd actually quite like him right about now.

I've not always been his biggest fan but he does have a little trickery about him and maybe that could blossom under Martin O'Neill.

Back in the day, well December last year, Doc was very keen on him and the first man to tell us about the deal that never happened was friend of the site Dave Armitage of the Daily Star.

When Wright-Phillips joined Chelsea he wasn't the completely finished article and not playing week in week out isn't really going to help his game in the long term.

If he came to Villa he'd play week in week out, if only because we don't have anyone, unless you count Wayne Routledge, to play on the right and I think if he plays week in week out, he'll get better, much better.

The rumoured price is £8mn., which these days isn't really a lot of money and it will be filling a big gap. What do you say; is he worth it?

I am leaning and surprising myself with this little lean, on the yes side. And no, I've not had a beer, but it's a bloody good idea right about now, so I'm off to quench my thirst with a bottle of San Miguel, that is if there are any left in the fridge after last night.

The beer from last night may also explain the title of this post, I'm just in a fairly good mood, so I'll leave now and drink my beer in silence, with the wife probably moaning at me for having a beer too early in the day, even though it is Friday!

he would be a great signing for us. him and young down the wing-would frighten the life out of defenders

Sign him up. If you want a pacey winger who plays on the right - but can also go left he is your man damo.

If you want a right midfielder with less pace - but better delivery (aka Beckham mould) - Bently is your man Damo ;) ;)

He seems happy enough at the bridge, even his old man couldn't persuade him to come here earlier. I'd think he were a good signing but i cant' see it happening unless the new management there were to decide he were surplus.

That would be an awesome singing! Young and SWeeP on the wings would be a truly mind blowing task for opposition defenses. But, once again, MON will probably leave it too late and he'll go elsewhere >:(

Badger Wrote: | 21.48BST | May 30, 2008

I'd have him at 8mill, but wouldn't pay 70k a week.
The only concern is the final ball, but he'd improve, I'm sure.

As said the pace would be frightening down both wings.
I actually can see this one happening.

Apparently we won't pay 15 mill for Bentley :-(

I'd like to see both, but I've started early too :)

Enjoy your beer Damian. Find something to occupy the wifelet.

SWP; I've been a fan of his for ages. He would be a wonderful addition. MON, you lissnin mate?

Bentley; I wasn't too impressed last season, yes he's improved, but still not really my cup of tea. I'm just biased.

With Ash/SWP on the wings and Thierry Henry in a free role just behind JC, GB/NRC orchestrating things in the middle we can't go wrong - I just feel sorry for all the Scousers looking down and seeing the floor coming up at them!! HA HA.

Id take him as he's class.

If we didn't pay the money someone else would so if we want to compete we just have to put up and shut up.

I'd rather not pay stupid money but it's the only way of getting quality players to play for you because they can get the money elsewhere.

Although i'd love it if he came to the villa, didnt he recently say he isnt interested in leaving chelsea even if he isnt playing?

clarksonn

Id have him in the team at the drop of a hat!

As for Bentley, was at the England game wednesday and have to say that I wasn't impressed (not that anyone other than hargreaves did!).

I like the look of what is happening, yes they may all be rumours at this stage, but it may be that people are begining to look at likes of Ash and Gabby getting into the England squad, and Barry forcing himself back in, and other "fringe" england players that arent getting a game every week may be looking at us and thinking they'd like to be involved!

Darragh
Darragh Wrote: | 22.16BST | May 30, 2008

Would love to see him at VP but he strikes me as a cocky little git who's more content with getting his 70K a week than playing regular football. I could be wrong and let's hope Ian manages to talk some sense into him.

£8mn for SWP is not stupid money, the lad was great at man city and broke into england, went to chelsea and has been picking splinters out of his ass ever since.
Down to the player though, sit on a bench for £70k a week living the life in london or halve your salary and get a chance to play for england... would love it to happen and maybe it will but am not pinning my hopes on anyone, i'm shutting my eyes till its all over and seeing who we actually have at the start of next season before passing judgement!! A beer is definately required though

As it's been said, Young and SWP down the wings would be incredible. His final ball, much like Lennons, leaves little to be desired, but every other part of his game is pretty top notch in my opinion. Ashley Youngs delivery has improved a lot over the season though I think, perhaps with more matches that's an aspect of his game he could improve.

SWP at £8million would be very good business.

I just hope we don't end up paying him £70k per week - it would just upset other players at the club (especially if he got more than Barry).

Although his delivery isn't too good at the moment, with the coaching from John Robertson, I think this would improve. Playing week in week out I'm sure he'd come good beacuse even at Chelsea he has had the odd match where he has been fantastic.

SWP would be a great signing. I dont see it happeneing as he has stated he has no intention of leaving but lets put the bid in anyway and try and tempt him.
@ PaulE mate we will have to pay him 70k a week to get him. We have to accept we have to pay more. I can guarantee you Barry will have something in his contract that states he will be paid as much
as any other player at the club or something similar and if not MON/ Lerner will be offering him a much improved contract to try and keep him anyway.

I don't think the way to break into the top four is to buy players that aren't good enough to play for a top four team.

taglor
taglor Wrote: | 00.21BST | May 31, 2008

We could buy him just to sell him. I hear MON has an OCD condition where he has to sell whatever he buys, even in tesco by the time he's out of the door with his pastie he's trying to sell it to someone in the car park.

eoin1981
eoin1981 Wrote: | 00.53BST | May 31, 2008

sign him up asap.....

he was good enough with man city to be sold for 25m or whatever it was.....still young and lots of premierleague experience. RW a problem area for us...has looked good in his limited oportunities for chelsea - who dont play wingers.

finally a decent link to a player that I would be happy with!!

phaedrus
phaedrus Wrote: | 01.55BST | May 31, 2008

Yes, I think SWP would be great.I am however, coming to the conclusion that we are going to be left dissappointed with this summers purchases, assuming we make any that is.
The club say they want to break the top 4.Well that would involve buying at least 6-8 top quality players.(2 fullbacks,a goalie, winger, central midfield, centre half & striker )
By my reckoning that is around 60-80 million quid.
Do you think that is likely to happen ?Neither do I.
Prepare yourselves for more signings of the Routledge variety & watch clubs like tottenham muscle past us by showing ambition backed with cash.

This implies an optimistic beam down on villa park which I feel, gets the villa spirits up for the start of the new season only then to enevitivly be plumuted back down with the harsh reality of the transfer market: slow, frustrating and very unoften rewarding for your clubs future. As for this rumour RUBBISH why would Martin O'neal (Aston Villa Maneger) spend however much money on a player which he doesnt need? I DONT KNOW

AV33
AV33 Wrote: | 03.50BST | May 31, 2008

SWP would be wicked on the right, but only if we can get an attaacking centre midfielder who can take / win the ball, control it and play it confidently out to Ash or the new right winger (SWP?).
Barry fits the bill but will probably be off to Scouseland, Coker can win the ball but doesn't posess the killer pass.
We need a new, confident goalie, some experienced defenders (especially right back and cover for Fred)and DIEGO...DIEGO...DIEGO.
Come on MON, this boy will change the way we play and the forwards will be able to get where they need to be and not have to drop deep in order to get a sniff of goal! Barry can go for me as long as we get this guy and a confident defence for next season.

UP THE VILLA ;)

I think SWP will be looking to leave SB because he hasnt been picked in the England squads, he hasnt played in a while and depending on the new manager I dont see that Changing. If we he wants to regain his England place he could go to us but I think he may end up at Pompey.

Still we should go for him at £8mn

SWP would be a great signing!!
under Grant he was effectively frozen out of the chelsea team but under Mourinho, i personally thought he was a class act!!
when joe cole was injured (and when he was fit), SWP blossomed and is one of the players i think is gettin a raw deal in terms of representing england, especially leading up to euro qualifiers!!
On that note, hes english, which every1 seems to want more of, and at £8mill hes a bargain! hes still young, and under MON would achieve (if not exceed) all potential he had at chelsea which is sayin something!!
a fresh start for SWP under a great manager may see the kid become one of englands finest wingers, which i personally think he is!! not that im english, but every1 makes a song and dance about it :P!!

As for the right wing just buy one or even two. Bentley, Lennon, SWP, or Milner. All young english and would all make the vila squad better. obviously SWP Would be ideal but even if we only bought lennon MON would certainly improve his delivery of a cross. Just buy buy buy.
