In Martin we trust: Come to the Villa Craig Bellamy

Friday, 06 July 07, 10:23 AM · Comments (35)

There were a few heated comments yesterday. Villa to Villa was fine, just cute banter but a few Liverpool fans came in for some stick. I don't particularly like it so ask that if you're going to post, post knowing I can't delete it.

Onto the quick question we posted yesterday, about Craig Bellamy and should Martin O'Neill bring him to Villa. Normally for a question like this it isn't so close.

Of all the votes 49.5% of you voted yes, putting your trust in Martin O'Neill, which is something I'll get to at the end of this post also, but 7.6% of you were undecided.

For those a little slow with numbers, that makes 42.9% of you that said he shouldn't be signed. I suspect that was picked on the back of his past rather than his footballing ability although I'm sure some don't rate him.

The thing is we all know of a Craig Bellamy. The guy in the pub that will, like clockwork, lose the plot at least once a month after a beer too many or the one that is just always the one where when he comes over to chat, you know you're in trouble.

Sometimes these people need to be given another chance and sometimes you have to put your faith in the manager. I'm putting my faith in the manager for now, even on the Craig Bellamy issue.

This is something that I think I need to mention. I posted something yesterday about the anti-climax press conference for Nigel Reo-Coker and maybe that was wrong.

Maybe, everyone is entitled to a press conference, but I got excited, as did a lot of other people and all the club had to say was it's 'only for Nigel Reo-Coker' instead of saying nothing.

The thing is though, this site is a blog which is based on opinion. It's about individual views and the commenting system is there for you to pass on your comments and your views. It's not something for you to use to have a pop.

Passion and excitement is high at the moment and while nothing will happen until the club tell us it's going to happen, like the press conference that we had to find out via Sky Sports yesterday or Davis leaving for Fulham, which we also found out from the Fulham website, even that West Ham accepted our offer for Reo-Coker, which coincidentally we found out from the West Ham site, we are all going to get excited and we are all Villa fans.

Please use the commenting system to get across your opinion in a way you'd like to read someones opinion. I know I'm probably the worst but I am trying to get better. But when as fans, we have to learn everything from other sources and the club don't tell us anything, I can get a little frustrated, but in hindsight, I will correct myself, like I've done above.

I don't understand why this article is up. About a month ago Liverpool made him valued at something we weren't willing to offer. And since then i have never seen an article (other than on here) about him coming to Villa. Tactics-wise i reckon we'll be looking at another John Carew anyway, we have Luke Moore and Gabi who're both extremely quick players who are used to get onto Carew's flick-ons, now we need someone slightly like Carew so that he's a good header, but also pretty quick and deadly in front of goal.

Bellamy only ticks the quick box. So i can't see us going for him. Maybe Owen if Newcastle can't make him stay.

I think the problem with commenting is that we get fans from other clubs coming on and either slagging us off and winding us up.

Unfortunately most fans of other clubs don't leave constructive or sensible comments. It's a shame, as the one's that do often leave excellent comments.

With a £9m get out clause, only his wages (£90-£100k p/w) would make Villa think twice about Owen (and perhaps a slightly dodgy right knee). However, all in all I agree with the Owen shout. ManUre will have seven strikers with Tevez. Liverpool always distance themselves from Michael, and Arsenal seem happy buying Eastern Europeans. Spurs don't need another finisher, and finally, Champions League footy doesn't seem a pre-requisite as he did after all, join Newcastle. It would be the biggest signing in Villa history, so give 'em £10 mill and our Michael £90k a week and we can all go on the p*ss to celebrate.

i really wanted Bellamy during the season when it was first mentioned, but i dont know anymore. Maybe my hopes have been built up for something better over the last few weeks but i have similar feelings to many of you as i am impatient and frustrated when i see other players that we have been linked with us turning up at other clubs, and at the same time i have full confidence in Mon and Randy. The gaps are there to fill and they will be filled and even if that is with someone like Koumas, Bellamy and other names that have been considered not good enough or not world class, if they want to come to Villa and give 110 percent then that will be good enough to turn some of those draws from last year into wins, 10 points is all we need to improve on from last year and with some of last seasons new boys now hopfully settled and a few quality, motivated players added (and lets not forget the likes of Zoltan Steiber coming through like gabby and co did last season ) then i think we will be in a european spot next term.

( SAYING ALL THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ONE PLAYER THAT MAKES YOU GO WOW, SOMEONE TO BOAST ABOUT AT WORK AND FOOTY, SOMEONE LIKE OWEN, UTAKA OR HUNTERLAR )

I just don't rate bellamy as bringing something to the club that we need. On his day he's a great player, but great enough to give us anything that coker, moore, young and agbonlahor can't provide combined together?

It seems we have carew up front who is never going to break the 20 goal barrier for us. It remains to be seen if gabby or moore will have it in them. And while i'd be dubious about going for owen, or whether he'd come right now, i do think he is exactly the type of player we need, not a bellamy who just doesn't put the ball away as often as we'd want.

Sure his attitude sucks, but to me it's more about his ability and what he'd bring on the pitch.

Damian

No need to apologise, we are all agitated.

In MON we trust. Have you read Nigel's comments? Only one reason he came to us - MON. We have the ace in the hole over Man City, Newcastle, Spurs etc. - MON.

MON IS the new Villa. As long as MON is here, things will keep improving. If MON wants Bellamy (and he knows him better than any of us), then so do I.

I agree with the OWEN message..pay the money..give him the wages he wants,,and see all the seats full next season..want to raise the villa brand, then with a player like owen you get the best of everything,,media, goals, sales,,etc etc...it mite not be long term building..but in the short term he would be a superb asset...

As a west ham fan, I wish you well with NRC. I for one always supported him & liked him as a player. I still do but really felt let down by him as a man and a player last year and also by his press conference yesterday. I wish him success in the coming years & to Villa, after all our 2 clubs have nevere been big enemies. I do feel though that he lacked class in the way he puts the boot in to west ham. Other players have left us & praised us , joe cole, carrick, ferdinand etc but he couldn't wait to have his say. This lack of class was why many fans fell out with him last year, throwing the captains armband when he got subbed (incidently he didn't give 110% that game).

But like I said I wish him well and just hope that you don't get off to a bad start, because after all his heart doesn't lie with villa, it lies with a top 4 club !!!

Michael Owen would be amazing, always forget he's still relatively young at 27, I'm liking the Utaka idea, would fit the O'Neill buy young policy at 22 he's a bit of a beast aswell.

According to BBC they reckon West Ham and Bellamy had talks yesterday and he's agreed a £70k-a-week contract.

Apparently Liverpool and West Ham will now re-negotiated after Liverpool rejected their £7m bid.

I think a lot of people have all got good points in some shape or form, but at the end of the day theres only 1 mans opinion that really matters and thats MON. Now having said that my opinion is that we should forget bellamy and be trying all out to get defoe to the club, although owen would be a welcome addition as well!!! The only thing thats really worrying me at the moment is our lack of right backs, I think luke young would be a good signing but we also need to sign cover as i dont believe that delaney is up to the job.

Dizzy; the reason this article is up again is that Liverpool have just paid about 10 mil too much for Torres and now MUST sell Bellamy. Another reason is that it's been said at Scutterpool that it wont be Crouch sold. They can not afford to have Kuyt, Crouch, Torres, new guy from Netherlands (can't think of his name) AND Bellamy. They know no one would touch Bellamy for 12 mil as they supposedly wanted a month ago. I think the reaction of a lot of clubs would have been: 12mil!>!? when you bought him for 6mil a year earlier - let him rot. Therefore they have to lower the asking price to off load a striker- and it's going to be Bellamy.

Would I take him at the Villa? Defo. A welsh upstart no doubt but I think a fresh start, a chance to show people he's a footballer and I believe MON would get him channelling all that angst in the right place: the football pitch. On the pitch he's pacey, aggressive direct and can score goals in abundance. He's had a nice rest at scutterpool thanks to Rafa's (who looks like something out of TINTIN with his goatee) rotation policy that ensures all his strikers are always put on the bench before they achieve any form. Remember Bellamy and Shearer a few years ago? They (mostly Bellamy) scored goals gallore. A think Bellamy and Carew could be the best of goal scoring buddies.

I still think MON has a few surprises up his sleeve aside from the SWP and Defoe run of the mil stuff. He did try to get Saviola last August before the deadline. This type of crazy genius I like.

Up the Villa.

Yes i think we should all trust martin at least give him a chance anyway this has been a problem for years at villa us fans are to quick to judge and want europen football within a instant i think every single fan should get behind martin.Craig bellamy on the other hand i belive would be great for us im just thinkin of the pace he would bring to us young gabby and bellamy would terrorise defences with there pace. But please everyone dont judge martin yet at least give him a full year or 2 not like its guna kill ya if u dont give him a year or two

When I first heard the Bellamy idea I was well up for it. I have since had my hopes raised of us getting some real top talented players.
I would prefer to have Bellamy as an option on the 31st August if we haven't got one of those top class players in. He will score you 15 goals a season but we already have some young lads who I think will grow into 15 goals a season players.

If you want to move us on the next level then we need an Owen or next best Defoe. Both of them are proven finishers. That is what we have lacked for many years.

I think we all need to continue to be excited by the new season and the thought of bringing in top players but we still have nearly two months until the end of the window.

I was worried about the right back situation but I spoke to Mark Delaney in the week and he is coming along nicely in his battle to be fit for the main start to pre-season training. I think we need to get another right back in but I had been thinking we need two.

I have a mate who is buddies with a guy who played with Bellamy at Celtic he said he is a really nice guy but just wants to win, a perfectionist that’s why he comes across as an ass. So MON must know how to deal with guys like this, he had him before remember and now he has already taken on NRC, another player with a piss and vinegar attitude who he clearly thinks he can manage so he must think that’s what we need a bit of fire in the dressing room, our players are a bit on the quiet side maybe even the manager so a couple of guys in the dressing room to kick ass might not be a bad thing. Like what Roy Keane did in man u. looking back I think yesterday was a great move and I change my view from yesterday and say bring on Bellamy. Enough screwing around lets go win games.

As quoted from football-rumours
"By the end of July Martin O'Neill will have completed all his business in the transfer market bringing in 6 new faces along with the already signed NIGEL REO–COKER.

The following will arrive in the next few weeks:

RB – Bosingwa (Porto) 3.5 max
RB/ LB – Lahm (Bayern) 6.5m max
CM – Sneijder (ajax) 11m max
CB/ DM – Digard (le havre) 2m max
RM – S. Wright–Phillips (Chelsea) 8.5m
CF – Fred (lyon) 12m max

Bringing the total summer spending from Villa park to over 50mill, a fraction below the 60mill budget set by Randy Lerner.

Expect a push for the top four in the EPL"

and

My Gran works as a volutary cleaner at Aston Villas new Bodymoor Heath training facility. As a lover of football she follows the clubs progress. whilst at work on Thursday night she revealed that the real reason for the 2 hour press conference delay was due to the hope Villa could announce the signing of two further players. WESLEY SNEIJDER and PHILLIP LAHM. unfortunately neither transfer was able to be confirmed before 8pm. as such the unveiling of both players will come next week with the unveiling of the new Aston Villa home and away shirts.

I hope you are right about bellamy, as much as I rate him as a player, its his attitude that I just dont think is worth taking a risk on, yes I know he wants to be a winner, but that aggression has to be chanelled the right way and not with a golf club!! Still say defoe is the right man for us as he would link up with carew perfectly.
