"Jamie Milner is Brazilian," was the chant that rang around St James' Park last season. "We won't sell for twenty million." In the end it took half of that to bring a player back to Villa Park
two years after he should have signed. Better late than never? When you think about it, it's one of the few things the winger hasn't done early.
A matter of weeks after Wayne Rooney became the youngest player to play in the Premier League, Milner was handed his debut by Terry Venables, and beat Rooney's record by fifty-one days. A month
later his goal against Sunderland made him the youngest goalscorer in the history of the competition, again taking the record from Rooney.
His sudden impact, coming just months after his GCSE exams (he passed all eleven with good grades, incidentally) immediately led to comparisons with Rooney, although the youngster was quick to
dismiss them. "I played against Rooney when he was 11," he remembered. "He could probably have been in the Everton first team by then. I think he was away playing for their Under-17s and
Under-19s by the time he was 14. I can't remember whether he was in midfield or up front because he seemed to be everywhere. He bullied people with his strength and beat them with his ability.
Everyone knew, even then, that he was going to be a phenomenal player. He has just gone on and done it."
A loan spell with Swindon followed, with six games and two goals in League Two, before Milner worked his way firmly into the Leeds United first team. He was promptly handed his England U21 debut
by Peter Taylor - the first of a record 37 caps.
But tragedy was to strike in West Yorkshire. Leeds, Milner's boyhood team, crashed out of the top division with spiralling debts. The club's best talents were sold in a vain attempt to keep them
solvent. "Some unbelievable players were sold off, and they were massive blows," remembers Milner. He would not be one of them, the chairman insisted, announcing, "He is the future of
Leeds."
"As far as I knew, I was staying," remembers the youngster. "But on the first day of pre-season training the club secretary asked if I was ready to go for my medical at Newcastle. It was a shock,
but the club needed the money. I was upset because I loved the club, but I also wanted to do what was in their best interest."
That didn't extend to taking a move to Tottenham; Milner refused to move to the London club because he didn't want to be so far from his family in West Yorkshire. He also refused to sign up with
an agent, despite being courted by several. "I'm not going out there looking for agents and commercial deals," he insisted. "That side of football can wait." It's still waiting - Milner is one of
the few players represented by the PFA.
His time at Newcastle was to be no easier than at Leeds. Within weeks of his arrival Sir Bobby Robson was shown the door and replaced by Graeme Souness, who dropped the winger and declared that
the club would not win, "with a team of James Milners". Milner kept his head down and, as he had from day one at the club, tried to learn. "When I arrived that summer, we went on a pre-season
tour to the Far East and Alan Shearer was absolutely mobbed all the time. You wondered how he dealt with it but the sort of person he is and the professionalism he has, he just took it all in his
stride. It's from being associated with people like that, day in and day out, that you learn how to deal with things on and off the field."
Still, he workes his way back into the team and played 41 times that season. The following summer, with Nolberto Solano determined to remove to Tyneside, Milner was sent on loan in the opposite
direction.
He scored his first goal in claret and blue in his second game for Aston Villa, a 1-1 draw with Tottenham. Despite a disappointing season for the club, Milner shone. At the end of the season,
though, he was sent back to Newcastle, with Villa unable to agree a fee with Newcastle. The failure of the deal to be completed was specifically mentioned in the infamous players' letter that
ended in the departure of O'Leary.
Milner, then, was caught up again in Newcastle's ever-changing managerial merry-go-round. Glenn Roeder was now in charge, and insisted the winger was a part of his plans. But the club then
accepted a £4m bid from Villa - now in the hands of Randy Lerner and Martin O'Neill - on transfer deadline day...only to pull the plug and leave Milner gobsmacked at Villa Park.
"The fee had been agreed. I came down here to the training ground and got into the manager's office and he said he had a phone call to say Newcastle had changed their mind," remembers the
winger.
"At first I didn't know if it was the manager's humour and whether he was joking with me but it wasn't a joke. That was a tough time for me and Villa as well. It obviously threw their plans into
turmoil."
Milner, of course, did what he has always done - kept his mouth shut and worked hard. He shone in Roeder's team, proving the manager right to have kept him, On New Year's Day 2007 he scored his
finest goal in a Newcastle shirt, finding the top corner from 25 yards in a 2-2 draw with Manchester United.
Before too long, Roeder was shown the door to be replaced by Sam Allardyce, and Milner was again out of the team - although not through anything he'd done wrong. "James is so enthusiastic about
his game that we actually have to stop him doing stuff, and that's always a problem," Allardyce said.
"It's quite a nice problem, but it is a problem because, at the end of the day, a young man of his age can still burn out mentally as well as physically."
There was no doubt Allardyce rated Milner. "He is a terrific prospect, and in two or three years he can be a really top player," said the former Bolton manager, who swiftly restored Milner to his
struggling team. But Allardyce was soon to become the former Newcastle manager as well, replaced by Keegan - another man whose views on Milner are nothing but positive.
"I don't even want to talk about losing James Milner," said the Newcastle manager three days before he finally completed his move to Villa. "He's a very important player for us and I think he's
worthy of a call-up to the senior England side."
Keegan didn't change his tune after the deal either. "He's a fantastic professional, and there's no doubt about it, they've got an outstanding player and we have got to move on," he admitted,
amidst rumours that the deal had been done over his head.
Milner, meanwhile, can take pleasure in the move for two reasons. Firstly, a sell-on clause sees around one million pounds go to his beloved Leeds. And secondly, he has the chance to play for
Villa as a full-time, permanent Aston Villa player. "I can't wait to get started," he smiles.

Your welcome to him and thanks fo the dosh !
he`s a good player at best but no more than that. 12m was daylight robbery for someone so average.
You Geordies really are sad - on a villa blog at 6 in the morning. I am a villa fan and the only reason i am on here at this time is i am in australia and OH YES ITS THE FOOTBALL CLUB I SUPPORT!! cant say i have ever thought of going on a newcastle or any other clubs blog for that matter!
its amazing how you were all on here 2 weeks back saying milner would never leave to villa cause we are a smaller club and it would be a step down. well get in the real world boys your manager and club wanted to keep him but couldnt cause he wanted to move to a bigger club in villa - FACT!!
I will agree its a high price and i believe we could have got better but we can afford it and the fact is by your managers admission he is gutted to have lost him. shows the gulf between our clubs doesnt it when you cant hold onto your prized assets and they would rather come to us.
we on the other hand can hold onto ours as proven by the Barry saga - we dont need the cash unlike your feeble excuse of a football club.
there is no point really comparing villa and newcastle. you are an irrelevant club in the football world, have never won anything and never will - i would list all of our 22 trophies but it would take too long. yes the 4th most succesful side in history!!
what have you ever achieved again? just f&ck off from our site you sad sad individuals!!!
Let's get one thing straight Martin O'Neil is a slimey two faced Hypocrite. How dare he Criticise Liverpool over the Barry affair, when he himself has spent all summer doing exactly the same over Milner. I knew after the Coventry game (which strange enough O'Niel attended) when he (O'Neil) was getting interviewed and asked about Milner putting in a Transfer request, that behind that sickley smirk, I knew he had got him.
By the way as dissapointed as I am at loosing Milner, I agree that he is not worth anywhere near 12 Million!
What a lot of "Whingers" you are!...We are set up for a very good season, and have 6 Strikers available, and not 3 as some people say!...Young is a Striker, and we have both Salifou and young Delfouneso who MON appears to have great faith in!!....Get behind your team you moaners
UTV.
Don't care what he's worth. We needed. We've got him. He'll make a difference. Deal with it.
bill west - seeing as we were bidding for Bentley to play right wing not so long ago i dont think we have been tapping milner up all summer.
and anyway what u have said is completely the opposite to what benitez and liverpool said u fool!! you have just said oneil didnt make a comment where as benitez cam out and said he wanted barry even before the end of last season. you have made no sense at all!!
an you are another sad geordie on our site!! what is with u people.
By the way Tonebone...I'm in China!!...It's 2.13pm Tuesday afternoon here!
bill west-
if you new anything, you would know it was your clubs fault, they didnt and couldnt pay him what he wanted, so he decided it was time to move to a club that will appreciate him, as villa will. while you guys will get regulated, we will hit top 4.
UTV
Apparently the Geordies don't have a site worth commenting on!..
Reply to Tonebone:
your assumptions are incorrect 6 in the moring? your not in OZ however I am and as I said your welcome to Milner @ that ridiculous price. So off you go, brum brum!
james milner will flourish under mon. another good quality young enhlish player who wants further honours. 12 mill yeah its a bit much but who cares id rather have him than the 12 mill sitting in randy's back pocket
Yes!...Regulated!...and probably RELEGATED asv well!
3 goals and 2 assists in the 2007-2008 season is hardly brazillian. He huffs and puffs a lot with no end product. 22 and still in the under 21s says it all!

Fool!
Gutted about lack of activity last night, but hey ho, let's look on the bright side. We have a VERY good YOUNG and ENGLISH side who can definitely improve on last season. As far as strikers go Delfouneso will give the Hare a run for his money as supersub and Sally will force his way into the team. We've got players fighting for starts in central defence and central midfield. MON has options for once! OK, a class forward would have been a welcome addition, but I believe we have the resources to compete for a UEFA spot. Man City might have Robinho, who clearly didn't move to Eastlands for sporting reasons [quality quote fron Madrid hierarchy], but we'll finish above them because money cannot gel a team. Keep the faith boys and UTV!

i stated 6am cause that is the time it comes up at on this site that u posted in the uk u fool!!!
dont make yourself look silly in future mate - you already look very sad on our site again!!!
Jinky Jim!....Your time is up!....Feck off!
The stats say it all!
How many goals? How many assists?
A lot of action on the field but hardly prolific.
You missed him for 4 million 2 years ago, now you got him for 10 or 12.
Definitely good business by Ashleys boys.
Friedel probably has a better games to goals ratio, but dont let that bother you.
Why did we sell him?
Its a bit like the old Ford Fiesta sitting in the driveway that you are perfectly happy with and dont particularly want to sell.
But when someone comes along and offers you twice the book value you look at it and think, well I'm happy , but it would be crazy not to sell. I could sell it, and buy 2 more exactly the same with the money.
Congratulations lads. You just bought yourselves a used Fiesta.
Its just a shame you had to pay Aston Martin money to get it.
Lets see if you're still as cocky in a years time.
Archie Brand...We have heard it all already!....Give us
a break and go and play on one of your world renound SLAGHEAPS!
ok geordies 12mn is too much. but tell me his value then 8mn? in that case we only paid £4mn to sign him cuz 8mn would be his resale. with inflation we proabably got him on a free.
so there you have it. that is why you spend more heavily on a youngster. thats where newcastle go wrong they sign has beens, former stars and meal ticket players. its time to admit you have been taught a harsh lesson by the villans
yeh newcastle fans reckon they are happy to sell him (I liked him tbh)..but do they really need to come on this blog and comment on how 'bad' he was and stuff. bit childish if you ask me.
oh and this page is on the nufc newsnow page...hence why geordies are commenting on it
The reason for Newcastle fans commenting on this blog is because it popped up in our newsnow.
My opinion is that this deal was good for all sides. Milner is a terrific worker and a really fit lad. I'm not sure right wing is his best position, I'm sure MON will explore his ability and find where he belongs on the pitch. The problem Newcastle fans had with Milner was that as a winger his delivery often let him down and he rarely went past people. He does have ability on the ball and was excellent playing as a striker in the Coventry match. His work rate is also 150% for all 90 mins. You'll never see him sulking or being in the papers for the wrong reasons. He is a professional.
Milner had become stagnant at Newcastle and needed the move to further his career. Newcastle got a good price for him. Villa get a hard working U21 player who will improve under MON. Everybody wins.
As for being on this site so early in the morning, well, Newcastle fans are also all around the world. I'm in Denmark and it's 9:30 here in the morning.
Hope you do crap against us this season, although I doubt it.

I could sell it, and buy 2 more exactly the same with the money.
Oh yeah, where are these two players that you brought in with the £12M then??? The on-loan 26-year-old Nacho Gonzalez, who is soooooo highly rated that hes been playing Uruguayan football for ages and is only good to help Valencia dodge taxes????
Or is it Xisco, the indifferent forward who cost you £7M, yes thats a whopping £7M!!! Hahahahahahaha.
I can understand your pain Geordie lads, you've won naff all for donkeys years, despite massive investment, Owen might leave and if he doesn't you'll have to give him even sillier wages, you have just lost one of your best players, and it seems the only players who want to play for you are criminals (Barton) and mercenaries (Viduka) and don't get me started on Alan Smith, the lad can't even play football!! Hahahahahaha. Mid table if you're lucky.

Yep looks like I need some work!getting bored here in the best country in the world, down to my last dollar to!anyhow if you ever come down to OZ and go to the Gold Coast make sure you trip down to Kingscliff Beach and pop in for a grog or two, easy to find, that's my joint on the ocean with the flag pole flying the NUFC flag and you wont need a dickie tie either, then you can cross the road to the local bowls club and you'll get served by the Mackum bar staff, you will love that!chatting to other no hope rs!As another goerdie that has played at Wembley (check the records} 1969.Milner is a tr yer and that's all,my point is $12m you must be Kidding.Funny thing is I meet loads of poms out here from the old dart, never met a brum yet!I'd know if I had as I'd spot that stupid bloody accent a mile off,or then again I have and walked the other way. The only thing that goes brum brum at my joint is my Mustang GT convertible. HTLS; by the way, I only came on you site to read the article on Milner.First and last time.
Reply to Tonebone:
brilliant once a brum and now a Queenslander.things can only get worse !
Ray, you probably have not met many Brummies out in 'OZ' because Birmingham is too good to leave, can't say the same for the north east can we?
Blimey. It's a bit early and sunny for all this hostility isn't it. I really like JM, I think he'll fit right in. Although on the Newcastle front I really like the look of that Gutierrez. Coloccini too actually. Unfortunately for them, I don't think they'll be enough to drag them into the top 6.
hang on lads recoba is on a free transfer and some other foreign strikrs could be too so dnt get on mons back it mite not be over yet
very slim but hopefull
thats if you are worried just a little bit of hope
Sad Geordies... where are your trophies?
Reply to Ugly_Betty:
Crickey a sensible brum,I think your spot on,especially with Spiderman.
Reply to JonnyW:
What can I say, your 100% correct,on the north east part that is,however I had the balls to do it and leave, how about you?you reckon the midlands is THE PLACE ?
Ricoba a great Striker is in England to check out Blackburn...Wants to play in Premier league...Free agent ...No transfer window deadline!.....Promising!!!!
ahh you poor geordies getting all worked up because you cant hold on to your players! face facts u northern t**ts! u aint a big club, u just think u are! U will always live off the fact u nearly won the premiership! U should have won it, but Keegan managed the biggest f*ck up of all-time!!!!! LOVE IT!
Yesterday was disappointing yes. We could have done with more players including a striker yes. Regardless, we have a stronger team than last year.
Friedel – Young - Davies – Laursen – Shorey (Bouma) – Young – Sidwell – Barry – Milner – Carew – Gabby.
Guzan – Cuellar - Gardner – Petrov – Reo-Coker – Delfounseo – Harewood.
Our reserve team could beat many prem teams (W Brom – Newcastle etc.). Our first team has significantly improved to beat most (Man City – Sunderland – Portsmouth – Tottenham – Everton).
Liverpool are hardly top-class. What we need to do is make sure that we get a good bit ahead of money city (well said someone earlier) before they sign Zidane, Nedved, & van Basten in January.
Ray, Its called loyalty and patriotism mate! U obviously left the north east because u think its shite!
Im proud to show my colours around my city, I'm proud im from Birmingham, after all, it is home to the best team ever to grace a football pitch, Aston Villa FC. U can take your Oz and shove it up your arse mate,
BRUMMIE AND PROUD!!!
I really don't get these Newcastle fans. Last week they were saying that Milner won't leave, and now they're saying that they're glad he's gone.
I think it all comes down to jealousy. South Africa 2010, how many Newcastle players will be there for England compared to Villa players????
The only reason Milner is still in U21 at the age of 22 is because he played for a shocking team full of no hopers. Just look at the defence for a start. Now he's at a club that doesn't hail from Scotland, he'll be an England regular in no time!!!!!!!!
Reply to ChengduVillan:
yeah hes worth a go
Now Now are you geordies still hurting in side about milner ? it appears so, well it looks like you may have other things to worry about now that the rumours say your losing King Dick Kev.
Ho dear me.
Here we go: LINK
I suppose MON might want to play Milner as second striker sometimes as well as wide right (where he IS a bit pedestrian). That'd give room to Routledge (who isn't bad)in a 4-4-2 while putting pressure on Gabby. I'd prefer a 4-3-2-1 though (ha El Tel's old Xmas tree! which several teams are playing now). We need more creativity so Salifou should play instead of Reo who is more and more like a nasty bouncer in a Broad St shite club. So:
Friedel
L. Young - Davies/Cuellar - Laursen - Shorey
Salifou - Sidwell/Petrov - Barry
Milner - A. Young
Big Jon
Newcastle are a team full of unknown foreigners, coached by a clueless manager [quality ex-player tho], supported by a pack of delusional morans and praying that they can become the biggest club in the North-East [not the 3rd]
Get off our forum!!!
I think you are always going to get bitter fans popping up, we should create an area of the site called "twats corner, welcome geordies and scousers". Hopefully Milner will come good, he's got time on his side and MON is good at bringing through good young players, it also gives us more than Young as a creative outlet on the wing.
I was disappointed not to have signed another striker, I think from MON's comments this morning he obviously tried and failed to bring another player in last minute. We have the unreliable Gabby and Carew who is not the answer either, but with good service we could still be well placed come Jan when the window re opens and go and get a 20 goals a season striker. Carew and Agbonlahor don't cut it for me, they were useless against a Liverpool side that were there for the taking, poor finishing from Carew and a mindless display from Gabby doesn't look like a good season long partnership. Mind you I would not have been happy with either Kevin Doyle or Heskey so that's one relief this morning.
I think we did well in the transfer window, Young looks capable (but over priced) and Shorey is settling in well - Sidwell is yet to really show the potential he has but I am sure he'll come good and hopefully be one of the midfielders we need to score goals for us. Cuellar looks like he'll be a great addition to the defense, but he has to dislodge Davis who had an excellent game at the weekend, Laursen is quality and a worth captain. Petrov is starting to show what he can do, although Hokey Cokey is another Gavin Mcann who should not be able to play on the right side.
We'll be a hard team to beat this season both home and away, the next couple of away games will be a good indication of how resilient that side is. 3 points at Tottenham would be a good way to kick start this season.

Any word from our leader yet?
King Kev has walked out, maybe they'll have Sam Allardyce back
lol kk on his way!!! newcastle in even more turmoil!! broke and with no manager!
LOL Newcastles "messiah" sacked or resigned lol yeap he changed a lot in Newcastle.
Can anyone honestly say that our squad now isn't stronger than last year? IMO we are progressing nicely and this is all part of the 5 year plan. We have spent a lot of money this window and I feel the money has been spent wisely on improving the team (as a whole!). Perhaps next year if we don't have so many players going out then MON will be able to build upon this and make 1 or 2 big signings and I feel this is what will take us to the next level. This season though, I think top 6 is a more realistic aim.
is this now a newcastle forum?
"King" Kev could be employed down the Villa.....MON's gopher
Phil McNulty on Newcastle:
For Newcastle, it is another sorry episode for a club that paints itself as a giant of the game and yet has not won a major trophy since the Inter Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.
They are almost terminally unstable, shifting from manager to manager with monotonous regularity, and shipping players in and out in a ludicrous revolving door policy.
ChengduVillan i think uve had one to many!can u please tell me what 6 strikers we have got!Young is a winger not a striker!salifou?????? hes a deffensive midfielder!we have got two strikers whor are one week awesome and the next week dont even turn up!(more gabby than carew)!and then weve got the hare!hmmmmmm
King Kev gone - Newcastle are such a fucking joke - come on you fat geordies where are you now?
LINK
Thanks to king kev them geordies have gone and hopefully we have heard the last of them barking on how great they are. now their managerless and without a winger shame !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I almost feel sorry for them
