Is Joey Barton going to be a Villa player by midnight?

Monday, 01 September 08, 12:44 PM · Comments (113)

The bible of honesty, the Daily Mirror, are reporting that us and one unnamed club are trying to sign Newcastle troublemaker Joey Barton.

It's a bit late in the day and that smacks to me of something that may contain a bit of truth. Although if you read the article there are no sources and not much information behind it.

Joey is facing a possible 12 month ban when he has his FA hearing on Friday and with that in mind I'm not sure he's worth touching with a bargepole.

He's a talented footballer and there's no doubt about that, but his attitude could do with a bit of work - or is that a lot of work. Although if anyone is going to sort him out, MON is one of the best.

I think this signing - if it happens - would divide a number of fans. On the one hand he's quality attacking player, on the other he's an obnoxious bully.

Everybody deserves a second chance, although if I'm right this could well be his third. Anyway, I think if the other club are Everton - as reported for some time - then he is more likely to go back home then come to the Midlands.

Before scrolling down here I thought there might be some positives. But alas, no.

Barton is both a thug and arguably, a tw*t. But he is also a talented footballer and a completely messed up person.

I am not claiming to be as messed up in the head through whatever means, as Barton but I have still transgressed many times and occaisionally hurt some people. Not physically, but I've been a bit nasty on occasion.

One day I had a little girl who is now 6 and a bit. Since then, my life has been straight, narrow, successful and starting look pointful too.

I am not trying to claim that a baby will cure him or even that he deserves the chance but I don't think that he is an inherently 'evil' person and if someone is willing to try and help someone like this to change it all then the good that will come from it ultimately is far greater than anything that will arise from shunning someone into the wilderness.

MoN may have issues with some things but as a person I reckon he has presence and an ability to influence someone like Barton for the greater good.

So, Yes he is bad but people need to look at how they treat people like this and not just bolt down the tabloid route of demonising and crucifying without recourse. I dare say there's a lot of folk on here who have got away with worse.

You can have Milner for 12m. He'd probably have the cleanest pair of kicks in the league, he spends enough time with his head down looking at them, we he does manage to look up his delivery is usually ordinary. Good business by the toon.

30. Chris Wrote: | 19.20BST | Sep 1, 2008

You can take Barton, as with Milner. Milner is your biggest summer signing. Considering you have money available thats pretty poor. He's ok, but doesnt set the world alight. £12m is a joke and when you consider he only had 2 asists last year (emre played about 10 times and got 4) the facts speak for themselves. He's not gonna take you to the next level, and before you all jump down my throat i'm certainly not suggesting we are gonna do any better.

I remember looking at Joey Barton a couple of seasons ago and wishing we would make a bid for him.He is a very gifted footballer and WOULD add quality and depth to our squad. He never entered my head as a possible signing throughout the summer, but if he escaped a ban and had the right people around him, he could be a real bargain for us.

Remember a couple of months ago the response to being linked with Steed Malbranque? The vast majority of people didn't want him but i for one would definitely take him now.As long as Joey Barton could nuckle down and work hard he could be an asset to a lot of clubs in the top 10.

Never the less, this storey is nothing more than a storey.

No, no, no and no.

I'm sorry - I try to see any shred of positivy in every move our club makes. I can see some in the potential transfer of Doyle, I could see it in Routledge and even Oyvind Leonhardsen. But this is nothing but a terrible, terrible idea.

I don't care if the lad is talented, not one bit. He is nothing but trouble and we shouldn't let him anywhere near our football club. Nothing good can come of it.

Besides, why would we want him? Barry, Sidwell, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Salifou and Osbourne all play in the same position. Makes no sense.

My money is on Everton or Blackburn, they're both pretty desperate.

Find it sad to see the Macams, sorry Geordies (all sound the same) now slagging Milner off. He's a young lad who is not the finished article and yes it is a lot of money but he will really improve in a good team.

Talk of spending big on wingers who don't deliver.......how is Duff?! A sad indictment that on transfer deadline day you are on the Villa blog, not your own.

Why would MON bother with the hassle....? Keegan has backed him to stay. I say, let him. For my money I would raid Newcastle for Alan Smith. Then travel to London and pick-up Ashton. A quick call to Spain for De La Red and finally dive in and get Pennant. We could also chase a few other players and attempt to persuade them to move. Mainly, Joe Ledley, Joe Lewis (GK), Tom Huddlestone, Frazer Campbell, Emile Heskey, Nicklas Bendtner, Jay Simpson, Nicky Hunt, Matthew Taylor, Florent Malouda, Ched Evans, John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher, Gary O'Niel, Niki Kranjcar, Grant Leadbitter, Michael Dawson, Jamie O'Hara, James Morrison, Scott Parker, Matthew Upson, Mark Noble, Ryan Taylor, Lee Cattermole!, Tomasz Cywka, Michael Spillane (Norwich)
