Juan Pablo Angel had a future at Aston Villa Football Club but Martin O'Neill was not going to stand in his way if something came up. The same is pretty much the case for Smiler McCann.
For any that didn't know, Smiler has been dropped. Prior to his suspension kicking in he was dropped to the bench and after his suspension was over he wasn't even on the bench. The same thing happened to Juan Pablo Angel.
Earlier this week and for pretty much every day since I've been seeing headlines along the lines of 'McCann has Villa Park Future' when actually we all know that we need better to kick on. It took me nearly a season to figure out Smiler wasn't up to it so it's quite impressive that Martin O'Neill has figured it out so quickly.
For me Smiler is a great Championship player. If any team are looking at promotion next season he would be the ideal person to get in; he did it with Sunderland and he's exactly what you need in that division.
I'm not saying he's not a Premiership player, I'm just saying he'll battle, but in midfield you need more than a battler if you're going to kick on and the Premiership is just that little bit quicker than the Championship.
Smiler will do you a decent job but I suspect he will be off in the summer, head held high.

i dnt care so much as to wether gavin mccann is here or not next season as he is a good squad player and is only 29 but the news that Neil Lennon is leaving Celtic at the end of the season is worrying considering 4 of our 6 signings this season has been from there, hes 36 soon and unfortunately we will probably be paying his wages when he turns 37!!
I dont really want Lennon, we have to go for young hungry players, Reocoker in midfield is a must, he has a bright future
I would personally like to see McCann leave in the summer, i feel that he gives too many free kicks away, and costs us lots of possesion of the ball. Villa need a completely revamped midfield. my choice would be ReoKoker, Whilhelmson, Makalelle and Iniesta
McCann back to sunderland maybe an idea.Personaly i dont see any point in buying a replacement for McCann, as petrov is filling that role perfectly ,we need a right back a centre half a real attacking midfeilder and atleast 2 forwards as i feel Gabby wont be able to emulate the season he has had this year
Iniesta would be perfect. Any realistic chance of getting him?
Any suggestions for a top-class right-back we'd have a chance at luring?
have to agree, we need better to move forward. If he's happy to stay as backup he would be a useful squad player, but we need someone of European quality!
McCann lost some of his pace and can't pass worth a damn. I started logging him during games I saw on TV and although I know I probably would get a better perspective from being at the game, even on TV his completion percentage was less than 30%. Just not good enough.
Gardner provides much better pitch coverage and if someone could take him on one side and teach him how to score goals he would have a bright future. He gets into the right position and makes the chances but he doesn't know where to place the ball. Very noticeable against Portsmouth and Bolton this season. It's all a question of angles.
