It's the Aston Villa way: Top four is what we want and top four is what we'll get

Monday, 02 March 09, 06:48 AM · Comments (103)

Going forward yesterday we looked sharper. James Milner was running and running, getting into good positions and looking to get forward at every opportunity. Petrov was excellent, as we've come to expect and even Gareth Barry seemed to have a little something extra.

Ashley Young needs to find whatever it is he had last season and for the first half of this season, but that will come back, it always does with quality players and Gabby needs a real rest, but apart from those two, the decision to rest players against CSKA seemed to pay off. The result was shocking, but we have to move on and not get bogged down by it.

However, it did all fall apart defensively yesterday. Carlos Cueller isn't a full back, we know this, as does Martin O'Neill and if Nick Shorey wanted a case to put forward to the manager, his last two outings should be good enough. Young should go to right back and Shorey should resume his duties at left back, until Bouma is fully fit anyway.

I'm a big fan of playing players in their preferred position rather than playing good players out of position. Call me old fashioned like that, but it sort of makes sense to me.

We've been spoilt this season though, mostly because Arsenal have had a horrid time, but despite some of the pundits now suggesting we're about to falter, I think we're just about to come out of our little slump.

We rested every department apart from our defence in Moscow and it showed. They looked 'heavy legged' for the last ten minutes and they are often the most important ten minutes for a defender, especially when you know the opposition are going to come at you, but with Bouma back soon and Laursen hopefully back in three weeks, it could be a lot worse.

The eleven day break after Manchester City is also going to hugely benefit our players.

We're also better away from home this season and with games away at Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United coming up, we're really going to need for that away form to continue, but I fancy it will, starting with Manchester City on Wednesday.

They call this part of the season the 'business end', as if everything else before this was just a warm up to when it gets serious, but I think we've been pretty serious as a team from day one and fancy that we'll get exactly what it is we all want, which isn't a direct route into the Champions League, but is a top four finish.

Laursen should be back for Manchester United, maybe even Liverpool based on the eight week assessment given out on January 23rd and with Bouma no doubt knocking on the managers door fairly soon wanting to know when he'll be making a first team return, I fancy this is coming at exactly the right time.

What I'm trying to get at is, we're still six points ahead of Arsenal and three points off second place. Martin O'Neill is going to have a 'heart to heart' with the players and things are going to be put into perspective. With a bit of luck he might even revert to five in the middle if he's going to rest Gabby, but I doubt he will, although the lad does need a talking too.

But if at the start of the season, I hate writing this part but if sort of needs to be written, had we been offered the position we have now with 11 games to go, we'd all have happily taken it and despite what a few pundits might say, there is very little evidence to suggest Arsenal are all of a sudden going to find the goal and there is as much chance, if they do, that we will also.

It's not over until May 24th, but I think top four will be secured on May 9th - the last two games might actually turn into games that could get us top three, if Liverpool stay in the Champions League long enough and keep dropping points, but that is another post all together and something I think we should worry about next season, for now it's a top four finish and it really is ours to throw away and do you think Martin O'Neill is the type of manager who will throw something like this away?

wow positivity!

the result wasn't good the performance was tho but i would be lieing if i said i wasn't worried.

i feel we are a team that needs consistency where as arsenal may put 4 or 5 wins in a row and may get a couple of wins against liverpool, chelsea and man u where as we will get beat.

its going to the last game.

Well done Damien, I think a good positive post that put things in perspective is definately what the fans of this club need. My friend yesterday (who is a Cov fan so i'm not surprised he said what he said) commented that Villa don't deserve O'Neill if all our fans are going to do is boo the team, despite having a little slip up at home but still in a good position for fourth. I was annoyed with him at the time but now I almost agree with him. These are probably fans who have only come flooding back since the good days started again, which are down to Lerner and O'Neill, and are definately in a small minority, but they need to shut up and let O'Neill get on with it. He's got us this far now, and I think 100% he'll get us further than we've been sinc 1993.

I am still lost for words, my wife says that she hasnt seen me like this in a long time! but yeah Stocky if we won on Wednesday then should feel alot better, im also a little worried that Pool, chelsea and Arsenal play on Tuesday and the all look like win games for them, then the pressure will really be on us, hope Robinho and Bellamy dont make it!

couldn't agree more- this could be the wake up call to push through the end of the season. going into a break with a win would be big.

a fit Bouma & Laursen will be a huge boost as well

Good post - the crowd were getting a bit anxious even during the 1st half and i think we just need to forget stoke and get behind the lads. The run in is as much about about mental strength as it is about football ability and if the fans are edgy the players start making mistakes. Scrappy 1-0 wins will do just fine.
I would also like to see the full back positions sorted out better. Cuellar was poor and it will do his confidence no good playing out of position - Shorey has not been amazing but the balance of the team would be better with him in - and finally - give gabby a break - nothing wrong with him coming on for 30 minutes at the end of a game if required.

I agree totally. I was ashamed by the fans around me at the end of the game, even allowing for frustration. We've got to smell the coffee - the worst case scenario is not so much throwing away 4th but throwing away the progress made by making the manager and players feel like we don't deserve them.

Good post, Damian... the right chord to strike now the reflection starts. I am concerned about Wednesday, especially with the others playing Tuesday, but we've got to make sure we don't add to the challenge the players will face from now on.

Gabby im very disappointed, he has a 11 day rest after the Man City(im sure we would all be well rested if we took 11 days off our respective jobs!) game and then we need him for Liverpool, Spurs, and Everton, perhaps we can rest him for Man U game as we're gonna loose anyway! Good piece Damian, after the debacle yesterday I think some people needed a calm head to lay down the facts and stop all the negativity that was spiralling out of control. I was utterly distraught myself but after a bit of time to reflect on things, it's not all that bad.

I do have to disagree with one point though, you write "there is very little evidence to suggest Arsenal are all of a sudden going to find the goal". Arsenal are quite an average team with their current state of injuries and what-not, but they still have some quality players and it's quite amazing they haven't hit the net recently. They will break the duck soon believe me.

i think its important to keep in mind that external factors are in our favour at the moment
its more likely that chelsea will finnish second than liverpool
the longer those teams are involved in the champions league the better it will be for us
liverpool (too conservative) and arsenal (fabregasless) should not be feared and have their own problems to contend with
every game for villa is now a cup final and that will bring a certain amount of focus to the team

Well done Damian, don't forget people we have effectively a two game head start and the Arse have still to play United, Chelsea, and Liverpool (as well as the enigmatic Man City), I still feel sick from yesterday but we'll do ourselves a huge favour by trying not to get ahead of ourselves and keep behind the players, not on their backs.

I'll be the first to admit that Gabby was poor on sunday - but the constant bashing of him on this site is ridiculous.

Fact 1 - Only 1 striker in the league has scored more goals than him.
Fact 2 - He is the joint highest english scorer in the league.
Fact 3 - He is the third highest striker with assists in the league.
Fact 4 - He has 1 assist less than Ashley Young in the league all season.
Fact 5 - Combining goals and assists - he has been involved in 17 out of villa's 42 league goals
Fact 6 - If Maradona, Pele and God himself were up front - they would look crap if all there team did was send crosses in from midfield.
Fact 7 - Gabby missed a few easy chances in the last few games. Heskey has missed no chance since he signed. Thats the problem - Mark Delaney is more likely to score for villa this season than Heskey.
Fact 8 - Some nutters are going to say that its not Heskeys job to score, like its not Milners job to attack.

Fact 9 - Gabby is the best forward Villa have had for MANY MANY years.

Finally - blaming the full backs for our defensive frailties is missing the obvious weakness. Curtis Davies has been a shambles for a while now. Whisper it but big Zat has been playing ok recently and on current form should definitely partner big Martin when he comes back.

451 against Man city might not be right there midfeild will prob be undercontrol with only 4 men playing, hopefully givan is off form and with 2 strikersd we should score. worse case 0-0
we have controled bell before hope hes out tho.
Zat V Robiniho would be good to see. i would risk a red card to snap him to bits.

Based on yesterday's game, we're in big trouble if we make a habit of going 2-0 nil up with 3 minutes to go, and then drawing. I.e. we're not in big trouble based on yesterday's game because what happened yesterday won't happen again all season, to us or to anyone else. It was just one of those things. Of course, we could probably have removed the chance of what happened yesterday happening by playing a little differently in the last ten minutes, but changing the way you play completely and instantaneously is usually very difficult. Momentum is a powerful force.

Having watched the highlights, the two significant things I noticed were thus: Firstly, Davies, for the first Stoke goal (Shawcross' header) was beaten in the air, but was also outmuscled. The challenge Davies offered was weak, and I'm convinced this is because of his weak shoulder. I'm no medical expert on dislocated shoulders, but I would assume that, for the most part, Davies' weak shoulder isn't going to affect his game, but in certain circumstances it will. Yesterday was a case in point. What happens as a result, we will see, but Davies was clearly compromised, and most times that wouldn't have happened.

Secondly, Gabby needs to be rested/dropped. I'm a huge fan of his, and I'm disguseted by the unthinking stick many people give him. However, it seems clear to me that he is out of form (which I guess has something to do with being a little jaded, whether that be physically or mentally - and probably more the latter than the former). You need a squad for three reasons; to cover for injuries, to allow players a rest, and to drop/'rest' players who are out of form. Gabby should have been rested for the odd game here and there before now, and had he been, I think he would have maintained his form, and wouldn't have missed the sitter yesterday (which would have made the score 3-0). He's served magnificently, but I'd play Delfouneso against Man City.

To sum up, yesterday was a blip, and that is all.

It was bad - apparently some people think we would have been better had we took a plane to Moscow midweek as well? Bad but apparently the same team could have won the Uefa Cup? Don't make me laugh.

The order of the day must be 4-5-1 with NRC or Sidwell in there to help the defence who are shambolic at times. Let's get the one pointers and hope we pick up a few lucky breaks.

N for everyone who is calling for him to be rested. Trust me, if you get your wish you will soon realise how vital he is to us, because what you'd see would be unthinkable. we would not be keeping the ball for very long and nowhere near as potent cos he makes so much space for the rest of the team. and other teams would just come push up to half way, and play the game in our half... i'm sure we'd all enjoy that. he's the only one who ever gets into those positions, cos Carew and Heskey defineteley cant. and if we keep getting on his back we'll ruin him.

I can't believe the booing yesterday- absolutely DISGRACEFUL by any fan who did it. I was GUTTED, totally gutted and felt robbed. But booing them after what had been a very good performance for 87 minutes isn't fair. Even Alan Hansen called us fickle on MOTD 2 last night, we're getting a reputation as a bit a bit of joke fan-wise.
I thought Gabby was dire yesterday. Lazy and that 1st touch of his is CRIMINAL. Somebody said he holds the ball up well- with that touch???!!!!! Still, we shouldn't get on at him during the game, it doesn't help.

Christian1983
29. Christian1983 Wrote: | 15.27GMT | Mar 2, 2009

My main gripe is with MON. We've often talked about his lack of substitutions and the reasons why.
Yesterday at 2-0 he COULD have brought on Reo-Coker or Gardner and pack the midfield.
At 2-1 he SHOULD have brought on one of these 2. We'd have kept the ball, slowed the rhythm Stoke had created and seen it through. He didnt make the sub and we never looked stable from the second they hit the post. Bad call Martin.
Still, 6 points ahead of Arsenal- anyone not have taken that??!!!
Come on Villa, fix it on Wednesday :D

I think we're suffering a a little bit because as brilliant as Ashley is, and as much as I love seeing him with the ball, he's not been QUITE as effective lately. That's no fault of his own though, its impossible to keep those standards all season long (excluding perhaps Ronaldo last year) because he's magnificent. But if he could find that extra 10-15% that we saw earlier on, we'd be winning these draws and turning losses into a point.

I'll tell you what does it's the fact he knows that he could sit on his arse in the centre circle for the whole 90mins and MON still would not take him off. dear oh dear oh dear. so we lost a two goal lead and got a point. we are 6 points ahead of 5th place an i think we wil bounce back from this.

we are in danger of turnin into newcastle/spuds/shiteh/scouser fans here. everythin o'neill has done is with patience, building a squad. some of the views on here are just mirroring the "instantaneous success, must have it all now" attitude that has poisoned the likes of spurs, man city and newcastle fans.

instead of using wasting energy slating the team, turn it into support. lets be proud fans for fuck sake an get behind the team. it is getting a little embarassing. after 13 games unbeaten, we are entering a sticky patch an this is gonna test the squad to the full, as well as us. if we can overcome this, we can say we supported the team through it.

This is the first time I've published an IP - moderators and myslef can see them but not unless you have that status, but to come onto a website and use language like that is just pointless and he was as good as asking for it.

But if you look in the terms of service link at the bottom OleOle are basically asking him to not come on here and write abusive messages - which is what he's done.

I'm all for banter - you all know that, but I'm not going to go on to another site and start typing the type of things he has said - I'd be too embarrassed to do it and I think it childish.

Perfect. Submit that as a blog. Cos Im getting increasingly pissed off about this bashing. The guy who sits behind me at villa cant wait to give him loads of stick. Its a joke. If it wasnt for him, carrying the team at the start of the season, we'd be mid-table and average. Hes down on his...

I am there every single game at villa park and theres a good chance that im sitting behind you from what you said. Running, ok... even then he was lazy yesterday... intelligent HAHAHAHAHAHA - not a chance!

panics in front of goal, panics when he was to take on a defender and couldnt finish his dinner for 40k a week let alone a premiership goal. He is fast, ok, but unless barry or young gives him a through ball to run onto where he has already beaten the last defender by getting to the ball he is done!

We need a player who isnt afraid to shoot, right now that is only Big John! Heskey and gabby get the ball and pass it off... no goals in them. Im sorry but if you think he is playing well you are attending the wrong matches mate... He is miles away from his nearest competitor in Walcott, who can finish, take on a player, pass alot better, and is oh so slightly fast himself.

2 great opportunities he let go begging yesterday, and i dont actually recall him getting a shot off all game...

Is it me or did gabby stop playing well when we changed formation? As i remember he was playing out of his skin when leeft up front on his own as he had no choice but to work hard. As soon as we go 4-4-2 he starts going missing again. so i think change of formation is a must!

Villa_Chris - I agree Sidwell hasn't looked impressive. I just think he does a lot of covering - which is enough in a five man midfield. Arguably we have become less effective without the ball recently.

Id rather play Gardner or NRC in there instaed of Sidwell. Would like to see Garner given a fair crack at playing in the centre when Pertrov and Barry are there also. If we go back to 4-5-1 do you think it would work without Gabby playing up front?

Reo-Coker all the way, leave gabby upfront by himself and back to 4-5-1. Plenty of Bench options if things don't work out. Coker will end up leaving if he doesn't get first team action, he is WAY to good to be sat on the bench.

I have been saying for quite a few posts that Gabby isn't the finished article; yet, but It's not his fault we have nobody in the Owen mould to replace him. Perhaps we could use Young up front instead with Gabby on the right and Milner on the left?

I thought our midfield was exquisite yesterday, and I even saw Milner put in a couple of decent crosses. If we perform like this against Citeh for the first 88mins I'll be happy.

I can't see Bouma back this season. Struggle to see anyone but Gabby up front in a 4-5-1 - that's because despite the fashionable theory, 4-5-1 is not 4-3-3. One striker struggles to get anything other than breakaway goals on the counter attack. Now if you played Heskey on the left, Carew up front and Gabby on the right - that's 4-3-3.

Great post Damian.

With City's injuries we should do well. And Im all for giving Gabby a rest but this might not be the game for it. City will come out and attack which is perfect to get gabby in behind and so he can score another fabulous hat trick against them.

With Heskey possibly struggling with that injury, I think Carew deserves a start after scoring in his last 2 matches. His play in general looked a lot better against stoke. I dont think anyone can deny that he is the most well rounded striker in the squad. Plus he and gabby always seem to be on the same wavelength as you noticed when john put it on a plate for gabby to miss kick :(

And hopefully Bouma will be ready for the spurs game. As we have quite the rest after the city game. I would think that would possibly be the target for him. I cant wait for his return, I really think it will give the team a massive boost. utv

Yes I am grateful and appreciative of what MON has done but with just a little more effort 1 or 2 more obvious subs just think where we could be!

If 43000 "football managers" can see that Gabby needs dropping and that big Zat turns his back every time someone kicks the ball towards him with any force why cant M0N?
Just dont want to go into the last couple of matches needing maximum points, just think it could be a great party against the toon or a real nailbitter if both sides need a win! Not sure my blood pressure will take it!!!

he certainly isnt in the same class as yorke or dublin were so not that many years at all mate. Gabby will never score 20 league goals in a season with the best service out there!

I can't believe the booing yesterday- absolutely DISGRACEFUL by any fan who did it. I was GUTTED, totally gutted and felt robbed. But booing them after what had been a very good performance for 87 minutes isn't fair. Even Alan Hansen called us fickle on MOTD 2 last night, we're getting a reputation...

I'm with you 100%. Lets face it, the last 15 years Villa have been shit and we haven't won fuck all. Well apart from the Coca Cola cup twice.

Finally, this season, with Villa showing a positive attitude and receiving a helping hand from lady luck have had a season beyond all of our wildest dreams. An absolutely amazing season I would call it. But sadly it seems that all this winning and doing well has gone to a lot of the fans heads. Booing, calling MON an ''Irish cunt'' What the fuck?? You're going on like with been challenging for the top 4 spots for years. Like we're champions league regulars.

Alan Hansen is rite, our supporters are a joke. The moaning fans are ruining for the people like me who are over the moon at been in 4th spot 6 points clear. Take your heads out your backsides and enjoy this amazing time. Get behind the team and show your support. Just because we've done well this season it doesn't mean the media are going to start calling it the big 5 instead of the big 4. Look at Everton they had 1 great season, qualifying for the CL and have they done it again? No.
