Joe Mattock about to be unveiled and a busy week for Martin O'Neill

Sunday, 29 June 08, 11:23 AM · Comments (36)

Martin O'Neill doesn't need to be at Bodymoor Heath or Villa Park to conduct his business, or so General Krulak PR would have you believe, but I'd put money on the real business of the summer starting very soon, now that the managers summer job at the BBC comes to an end tonight.

One of those first bits of business, I'm reliably informed, will be a £1.6mn. deal to bring Joe Mattock from Leicester City to Villa Park.

There will be more deals and very soon and while I've not got any news on that, it's just my gut feeling and common sense telling me that it will happen. We may even see a number of signings unveiled on the same day, as Martin O'Neill suggested could happen.

But back to Mattock; he's born and bred Leicester, has represented England at under 15, 16, 17, 19 and 21 level and plays as a left sided defender/midfielder - maybe the next Gareth Barry?

He's 18 years old and like a lot of what we seem to be interested in, a very good prospect.

It's also July next week and with the team getting back for pre-season fairly soon, Martin O'Neill isn't going to waste time or be setting himself up for a fall, if he doesn't get the players and we don't kick on from last season.

I hope the players are coming, because as an Aston Villa fan we have to hope for that, if we're going to compete, but I'll put my hands up and say if I don't see it next week, I will start to get a little worried.

Saw this lad a couple of times last season for England, looks very good. But he's gonna need a few years to mature and become established, I was hoping for 'ready-made' players who can improve us instantly. I've seen a lot of Sidwell-sniping on here, I don't really understand. He's a cracking player, Reading got relegated without him (Ok, not single-handedly) and Jose Mourinho doesn't really sign many mugs does he? Hope he's one to be unveiled.

The second youngest player ever to play for the England U21's, I know the Leicester supporters will be spewing at this 'especially in light of the history between the two clubs - we will need to move fast here
Latest reports are that Everton, Liverpool and West Ham are all interested in the player.
O'neill is building a young, homegrown squad and I am certain this boy is going to add depth and quality.

We urgently need a proven keeper who will give confidence to the back 4 though...

Not really what we need, MON has to buy players that are already at prem level not someone who might be good in a year or so...

"Might be the next Barry" you think he's crap...!

Good signing but its only 1.6m - what about the other 50m?

Fact is, we need cover at left back. He is young and has bags of potential. Sign him up, we need all we can get.

I would completely support MON's attempts to fill out our 'squad' with up and coming, young, talented players. They will be quite happy to sit on the bench and fight for their place if necessary and we might unearth a new Gareth Barry.

This would be 1 of about 4 players we would need to fill out our squad, in addition to the 4 quality players we need for our starting 11.

Wow MON is busy next week, after his work at the BBC.

What a laugh, the man should be from the Carribeans he moves that fast.

We don't need cover at left back, we have OHalloran as cover. What we do need is a goalkeeper, 2 rightbacks, centre-half,at least 1 right winger, a forward and possibly 2 central midfielders (if Barry leaves). And we need then now!

he's surely going to sign some chaps soon. besides, on the 7th the kits will be unveiled...and he'll need guys there to show it off :P
we've also got the friendlys and IT cup, so we'll need some new ones soon so that they can fit in with the squad and all.

I'm so happy to see us linked with such world renowned players..talk about having no ambition...pityfull

All i can say is RIGHT BACK< RIGHT BACK< RIGHT BACK.....We need a fucking RIGHT BACK.......................Actually we need 2 right backs, a left back, a centre half, a new midfield, 2 goal keepers & a striker that can score goals. I'd say about 10 players at least.

If MON doesn't do this he will get told where to go.

We have been linked with world-class players---Diego, van Der Vaart, Schweinsteiger, etc. Or are you one of those fans who begs to be linked to word-class players and then, when we are, says that the targets aren't realistic?

Villa_rules is right

Some of you are sooooooooooooooooooo unbelievably optimistic, id be quite willing to bet we wont spend over 20m, which, although sounds half decent, wont be enough for a good challenge considering we shud spend that much on simply expanding the smallest PL squad >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

and 5m of it comes from moore. this is considering we keep barry, obviously another 14m if we dont

Robinson is a sure bet and so is sidwell, we might as well get used to the whole Barry going to Livershi~ . i think if MON wants 10 players then he would buy them, i think its gonna be 5players the two i have said, right back and two young ones from the championship.

Have seen mattock play and he looked quite good each time, definetly good cover to have and one for the future. Don't think we're gonna see a flood of well known signings, can see miguel, wright-philips and sidwell plus a keeper, after that think MON will keep to his young en english policy, with more of the mattock like signings, not enough to make us a champ league side!!!

jeremiaswodo Wrote: | 03.01BST | Jun 30, 2008

I don't think we can expect every signing to be a big one. Let's just see who else comes in before everyone starts bitching. We need young players as well.

Right now I’ll take anyone. It is now 20 days till our first compettitve game and we start pre season training I assume later this week and we have signed no one and let 5 players go - 6 when barry goes!!! What a shambolic unprofessional joke!!! We currently have the smallest premiership squad by 7 players. with 7 players on the bench next season we will hardly be able to put a full 18 out at the moment and with any injury def wouldn’t!!
We have 3 defenders that are fit for the start of the season – knight, laursen and bouma. No one say Gardner please because he is a mifielder and cant defend!!! What if bouma and laursen got injured – we just play ZAT KNIGHTMARE I guess!!!
We need 4 defenders minimum, 2 goalies, a striker, wide right player and centre mid. So that’s nine players – even then if other team make a couple of signings we are still likely to have the smallest squad!!

Something must be happening soon with MONs return from the Euro's.
I reckon we'll see some action in the next week and that kit launch on the 7th would be an ideal time to show some new talent off.
I have a gut feeling that MON is after Schweinsteiger just going on what he hinted at on the interview and i reckon he'd be ace on our right hand side mainly but switching with Ash at times.
GB is surely history so let's kick on and get some real quality in.

UP THE VILLA :) ;)

I am not an Aston Villa fan, but being a Watford fan I like to hear what is going on with Ashley Young so I always look at all Villa websites to find out how he is doing. I cant seem to find any news on your player of the Season for 2008 ? from what I read from you the fans it was between Young, Laurson, bouma and Barry ! Did you actually have a player of the season award this year as I cant seem to find it anywhere ? good luck next season with a couple of good signing I think top 4 is not out of the question even of Barry does go .. All the best

AV33,

MON said twice after the final last night and was quoted on it by Shearer, that the Germans were made up of Ballack and very average players. A bit harsh on Schwinesteiger.

SSSSHHHHHHHH...

MON is special,
MON is concise,
MON is careful,
MON is wise,
he served his time under Brian Clough surely that is good enough?

He lead us out from from the gloom of DOL, sold the rot and we began to mold, a small but yet dynamic team that will achieve our Euro dream.

He will as always make us wait until his predetermined date, a date that will bring in new blood though this time it WILL be a flood!!

So consider what drives you on and multiply that by 10 for MON, his dream is there for us to see a reincarnation of Forest under Cloughie!!

Enjoy the next few weeks and keep the faith - if we could do a better job we would be sat here writing on this wall....we could always ask for Doug and DOL to comeback??????

I'm a Leicester fan and would love to see Joe Mattock in the premier league, preferably with the foxes but doesnt look like thats gonna happen for a while...

but anyway, despite what some of you are saying, he would be a fantastic signing for you, just look at what he has done already internationally at his age!yes, he would be one for the future, but not the too distant future, sign him, and he would be a first team regular by the end of next season!
