Keeper link number twenty-four: Wayne Hennessey and more on the other rumour that won't go away

Thursday, 12 June 08, 01:44 AM · Comments (74)

According to the Mirror, we've made an actual approach for Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey and we're willing to spend £6mn.

If you don't know about Hennessey, he's the Welsh number one at only 21 years old and was names in the 2007/08 PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Now, we need a keeper and this one is considered a bright prospect, I seem to remember Arsene Wenger mulling over an £8mn. bid earlier this year and he has been linked to other Premier League teams in the past.

Will be interesting to see it play out, especially as we're getting closer and closer to the Intertoto Cup.

Onto the other rumour of the day and that player who wants off to Liverpool. According to The Sun, Martin O'Neill will reject a £15mn. bid from Liverpool.

Now, Martin must know that he can get more, as Barry can effectively buy himself out of his contract next summer and according to The Sun, Liverpool are expected to put in a new bid, which could be worth up to £18mn. after add-ons.

If you believe The Sun, this must be coming to an end fairly soon because earlier this week it was £14mn. and now we're nearly up to £18mn. - maybe O'Neill is holding out for the £20mn that was rumoured the other day.

Wayne is meant to be a good keeper but 6m seems very high unless a lot of that is add-ons

Yeah he could be a good prospect but id prefer to sign someone like Boruc from Celtic! We'lsee how it goes. On the Barry front, if we manage to get 18M out of them then i think we should all be very happy!

if its cash only for barry, 20million, anything less, then we demand atleast one player as part of the deal - finnan for right back anyone - if not liverpool can go fuck themselves.

Sorry to be pessimistic again but will we try to get Hennessey? I am getting more and more worried as time goes on. MON has lost Barry and Melberg, got rid of a number of fringe players from what was already the smallest of squads. The players he is strongly interested in are being snapped up by other clubs (Milner to Pool. Maggio to whoever, Sidwell is dragging his feet etc) Am i the only one worried or am I overeacting?

Ben Richards
Ben Richards Wrote: | 14.04BST | Jun 12, 2008

Why not both keepers? We need two .... However I think Celtic would want top $ for Boruc which I'm not sure Villa would spend as we would've gone for Carson or Gordan

Hennessey is a decent prospect. I would like to see us buy Shay Given from Newcastle instead though.

Being Irish I think Shay Given is an excellent goalkeeper but he gets injured a lot and unfortunately, with our lack of cover, we need someone made on IRON ;D

Sky linked us with a 4m move for Bullard last night..

As for MON and Barry Brookside, I reckon that if the gaffer can dither forever (or at least until 11:58 on the 31/8/2008) on spending money then he may as well apply his financial acumen and milk the red scousers for every penny they can invest on the tidy, snail-paced 1 facial-expression midfielder.

Ben Richards
Ben Richards Wrote: | 14.34BST | Jun 12, 2008

Too many injury prone players on these lists - Not saying there bad - But Given, Bullard, these aren't going to put us on the next step. Foster could be a good option but again he's just come back from a spell on the sidelines - BUT HE'S YOUNG !!!

Any more of Boz - I know Hull are in the Prem now but he must still have some feeling for the Villa? I would still go back to Liverpool and say £2,500,000 for Carson final offer. I really think Liverpool would take it - Randy should go to fellow Americans not via Rafa .... Rafa looks like a desperate man - £15 million for Crouch with 1 year left ....£10 million for Carson ....

I'm much happier today for three reasons.

1. We may be offloading Barry but at least we are not getting pushed around.

2. James Milner is reported to be going to Liverpool

3. I've been thinking of a midfield three of Bullard, Sidwell and NRC - very tasty.

18Mill won't buy us 18-20 points next year. I'm talking about the points we got in the 13-14 matches were we conceded first and managed to have the heart to comeback and get a draw or a win. Unfortunately I think Barry was hugely influential in our ability to do that :-/

Now that its sure Barry will go, we have spend all the cash on a replacement..! MON did'nt know he would be losing his captain in the summer so he really has to go for broke and spend the lot ( the 18-20 mill is not part of our transfer budget). Two palyers i have in mind are Diego and Lucho Gonzalez both would be exspensive but we are getting good money for Barry, and if MON rates him so highly he has to replace him with a player as good as or better. Gonzalez would be the easier, because Porto are out of the champions League. Give him a big signing on fee, and 50K a week.....

Surely Gera as a free as back up would have been a good move what with ony havng about 14 players ath the moment? I get the impression that MON is stuck in a time warp and is offering the same wages he used to pay to his Leicester players 10 years ago.

If we could sign him, then send him back to the dingles on loan for a couple of years then that could work! But, in all depts. i'd prefer players who have a good C.V of playing in europe or at international level! Its the only way forward!

As for Gaz Baz, £15mill turned down, the media dept at Villa park must have got back from the pub! They've published a statement on the website!

Maybe Juventus will let us have Mellberg back for a couple of Millions!!!!

And finally as for Van der Vaart! I'd love him! He's quality!

A £15 million bid for Barry has been rejected today. I do think that we'll end up with around £16-18 million in the end though because Villa are really playing hardball on this one and it's good to see Liverpool not getting their own way!

That money has got to be spent on some top quality signings though to push us forward. If we're really trying to get close to Liverpool, then there's no sense in letting Barry go, which is now inevitable, and signing people like Bullard and Scannell. They maybe good squad players and able to do a steady job when required but it really would be a step back. Granted, we'll receive a massive fee for Barry but the next step is even more crucial, how O'Neill uses the funds.

As someone said above, the 18 million is not part of our initial transfer budget, it is now a bonus and money that must be used to strengthen. Who wants to hear that same old 'small squad' excuse again!? Not me, that's for sure!

£18 Million could be used to bring in Wright-Philips and Diego Forlan, I'd love to see that. And as for a replacement for Barry, Lucho Gonzalez would be a great signing. Kim Kallstrom would also be a great addition to the squad but then we also need a goalkeeper, right-back and centre back!!

The speculation continues...

I think MON will push on for 18mill, but may go for 15mill with a player deal, hopefully someone to fill a space that we have, Finnan perhaps, maybe Pennant as one paper suggested. I have full trust in him, and form todays rumours in the tabloids, i get a good feeling things will start moving now.

Jimmy Villain Wrote: | 17.55BST | Jun 12, 2008

I don't think Liverpool have 18mil to spend one one player, so this could end up with Barry at the club for at least another season which wouldn't be half bad. I am sure that MON has a plan and that fee they are holding out for Barry will be quickly used to buy a good replacement midfielder. MON has been in the game too long, and all these squad players we are being linked with are just that - you'll have no idea who MON brings in until they have signed on the dotted line so until then all this worry is premature. I understand that his dealings in the transfer window have been less than prolific, bar Young, but I don't think any of us have to tell him what he needs to challenge for Champions League football - he's played there and is well aware. Keep the faith, good times are coming for us…

Has anyone else noticed that mon hasn't been on the beeb for the last few days!..
If Barry wants to go fair enough, good luck to him, its just nice to see us not being pushed around by the scouse and holding out for OUR valuation of him.
SWP and Forlan, you've got to be kidding. One can run fast then kick the ball into touch, the other can't score in the prem.
As an answer to woodinho, don't laugh I reckon 5-6.
Keeper
Right back
2 midfielders (1 central, 1 wide)
Striker and or another Defender.
Thats 5-6. Then add about 4 youth lads to make the step up and we then have 10 ish.
I know who i would like to sign but ultimately it doesn't matter what we think. As long a mon knows thats good enough.
One more point/gripe. Some people on here seem to be obsessed with spurs and the like. I honestly believe that if these clubs were linked to my local 'The Cavaliers' right back some would be suggesting or asking why we aren't linked with such a player.
Makes me laugh sometimes!
Just chill. Relax. Enjoy the speculation. Players will be signed but maybe not till the official kit launch. UTV

When Barry goes, we need 4 to put us at the same number as when the season ended. Given that we hopefully have a uefa cup run, and have 10 or so extra games, another 3-4 on top at least.

Miniumum of 7, ideally 8 or 9!

Cant see it happening - MON just doesnt have it in him to be that decisive and proactive in the market :o

Darragh, I see what you're saying but it's still a sideways step, probably even a backwards step as Hamburg are a lot closer to the Champions League than we are. I'm sure we could probably afford better wages but there will be plenty of more appealing teams than us in the mix for him I'm sure of that.

A midfield with Bullard, Sidwell & Reo still looks good to me, MON & team will really make them buzz. We are just not going to get the big names some crave for until we are a top 4 club which, with MON and his ability to develop players, we will be in time.

We have to be realistic and make the most of the talent we can attract and that is exactly what MON and his team are best at; that's why we achieved 6th and why we were challenging for 5th. So players like these should be welcome and will do just fine for us and we can all be a little more optimistic right now.

Villain of the North
Villain of the North Wrote: | 18.36BST | Jun 12, 2008

Loads of people have joined prem teams that weren't in the CL for the chance of playing in the prem. Spurs managed it when they first signed Davids and then Berburytoff. Newcastle managed it with owen. Throw enough spiel and money at them, anyone will join. It's whether they'll come for the right options.

At the moment, if villa's drive for success isn't enough to attract players, it would make you question what is actually going on behind the scenes and why barry is convinced he needs to leave to play CL football.

If we get £20 million for Barry it is good business seeing as we almost sold him to Portsmouth for £4 million 2 seasons ago. Barry clearly cant see what MON has done for his career since his arrival and doesnt appreiciate the fans consistant support for his international status. I dont think he'll play half as many games and think he'll struggle to perform when in and out of a team but good luck to him he's been a good servent for 10 years it's just a shame he's demanded a transfer when so much hard work is going into building a good, young team.
A bitter blow for MON the man who has transformed his career, we cant lick our wounds though, we need to spend big now more than ever to keep up with teams around us.

Dear Gareth & your agent,

Before you confuse your career needs with your emotional and irrational desire to play with your mate Stevie in the odd Champions League game, you might like to consider this.

Hicks and Gillett hate each other. The club has their debt incurred acquiring the club. They have already refinanced and the club pays interest of £30m a year. Accounts of Kop Holdings Ltd (set up to run the club) show a loss of £32.3m in the last year, despite reaching the Champions League final. The duo had to draw £1.5m to cover their ‘personal expenses’, hardly something rich men need to do. The duo have still not obtained finance for the new stadium. If they have not got it now, they will not get it. They have no capital worth talking about, the world is already suffering the ‘credit crunch’ and is about to go into recession.

Villa is totally stable and improving.

If the Reds have to sell to buy, they will have to do it again next season. Does any other Champions League club have to do that? Eventually they will run out of players. Are Man U, Chelsea or Arsenal interested in Milner? How long before someone comes in for Torres or Stevie? Will the duo resist the desperate need to sell? Have you ever heard of the two full backs Benny has just bought?

Who will pay £15m for Crouch, with only 1 year on his contract? Is Benny that daft? Harry Rednapp cannot believe what he is asking?
If they get the money to buy you, who else will they be able to afford? Benny has just had to confirm publicly his job is safe. He will be the last to know he’s going.

The Reds are a season from emulating Leeds, maybe DIC will save them from administration and a 10 point loss. DIC will sack Benny and the new man might not want you, or Stevie, who is reaching an age when they will cash in. A good agent would never sell his client to a manager with such an uncertain future or such an unstable club. The Scousers have not got a hope of catching the 3 above them.

They must qualify for the Champions League.

You are idolised by the Villa fans, but you won’t be by the scousers, wrong accent.

At Villa you have established yourself as an England regular. How do you feel about being rotated and only playing every other game? Fabio, one of the more important people in your life has said, “It’s very important to see the players every week. Its better for us if they play regularly (Crouch, Bridge and Defoe to note). It’s not important to be playing in the Champions League. A lot of players have done very well for the national team (you) without playing in the Champions League”. Source - Independent 10.6.08.

Steve (gis us a job) McClaren has just tried to raise his profile by saying you will benefit from Champions League football. Well he made only one good decision as England manager, he picked you who never played in it. But what does his view matter any more?

Benny has said they can play you at full back, wide and central midfield. He doesn’t know where he is going to play you. You need to play central midfield regularly. You play for the best manager in the country. Do you really want your next child born a scouser?! What does the wife say, or more importantly keep to herself?

Have you any idea of the fans response if you ever return to Villa in a red shirt? Don’t bother. Look Stevie in the eye, does he care for anyone other than himself and the Reds? Just accept you are bloody well off and you could screw it up, for what? Stevie will tell you about the importance of loyalty, if you need to be told, he must be laughing his head off.

Think Gareth, life isn’t always greener living in the red.
From someone who has contributed to your wage packet for the last 10 years.

Its all very well have a pop with peoples comments re Bullard & Sidwell ... I would take the later but not at 6m as some papers say - He's good but not that good.

Looking at that list - Saviola 2m is he at the end of contract? If he's that cheap I'd go with him. Milner & Vaart for sure - I know some people knock James but when he was on loan he looked sharp - I'm thinking Young and Milner down the flanks - Could be tasty ... Vaart setting up Gabby and ????

I will now throw a spanner in the works - Are full backs well - One - I like WB but from what I saw most of the goals we let in came down the flanks. Ok Olaf was being played in a silly position and MON will have to take the blame for that. Then a tight goalie in place things could be good.

Does anybody know how that young Left Back O'Halloran is doing? Will he be fit for the new campaign?

Well done, MON. After Rafa's insulting behavior, make him pay through the bloody nose. Surely Gareth has to understand that Rafa has done him no favors, and I can't imagine he'd expect MON to be a patsy and just roll over for Benitez. So I'm quite pleased MON is playing hardball. After all, how many times now has he apparently bid for a player to be told "that's not enough." Rafa has dug his own hole on this one, and if Barry can't see that, he's an idiot. He should never have let his agent speak publicly about wanting away and undermining MON's bargaining leverage. On top of being ungrateful for resurrecting his England career, Barry's had the bad sense to go and do this.

And I don't care whether Barry is happy about staying or not. If he wants to play for England, he'll show up and play if he's still at Villa Park.

But the top 4 can never be broken if managers don't do what MON is doing. The only way Villa should sell is if they get a valuation equal to Liverpool's valuations of their own players. Then MON can go buy a replacement and have the last laugh.

Sign Hennessey from what ive seen of him he seems similar to Joe Hart. Carsons performances last season ruined my nerves anytime the ball went near him i was nervous. Is it me or did he wander off his line leaving him exposed in the Pompey home game he got beat from distance twice.

Can anyone tell me if the Curtis Davies deal is actually permanent now?

BEEP :D

9m for Samba, 8m for Milner and "only" 7.5m for Van Der Vaart? Who valued those players, Mister Magoo?? ;D

He looks a decent keeper but is unproven so for that price i wouldnt bother 3 Million for a unproven keeper is the highest id go

Jimmy bullard needs to be signed for next season that would be the free kick taker sorted out for next season :P

Cant wait for the euro's to end martin might start signing players then either that or he will just be talking bubbles again to reporters about his small squad while sipping on his tea

Our best player is leaving we havent brought no-one but we dont have to worry. I just dont get martin sometimes. He is a great manager but he just doesnt seem to do a lot on the transfer market and we certainly need to buy-buy-buy!!!

MON on BBC - barry has more than intimated that he wants to leave, but seeing as he was the last man to wear the england captains armband the price has gone up - nice one martin

he also said that seeing as utd are struggling to keep ronaldo people shouldnt be surprised that villa cant keep barry

ive still got fingers crossed he's constantly in GS's ear about boruc, hes been amazing tonight

Aimar, D'Alessandro, Van der Vaart, Diego..maybe they would not come but do we actually try to bid for them - showing in the process some ambitious intent - or do we continue to discreetly sniff around young lads (sorry Glitter) and players deemed only good enough for teams from the 5th Premiership spot downwards?

When are we going to challenge for the 4th spot if we continue to suffer cronic bouts of inferiority complex?

I'm sick of reading "we're not good enough yet", what exactly determines how good are we right now? We've finished 6th in one of the most competitive leagues in the world, we have a few internationals in the squad, a proud history and a great football ground.

We also have one of the best British managers around, a wealthy owner and a solid fanbase.

So Birmingham is not Barcelona - big effin deal. I don't see players turning Juventus down because Turin is a bit industrial and grey..and with respect f**k cautiosness, I suspect a few on here have been anesthetized from years of mediocrity.

If a club show ambition and financial intent, players will flock. When Parma arrived in Serie A in 1990 (for the 1st time in their history) they were a nobody club: no throphies to show, a shitty little ground and a smallish fan base.

Five years later they had won the Cup Winner's Cup, the UEFA Cup, the Italian Cup twice and had signed some of the biggest names in football.

And you know where those big stars played? In that shitty little ground - because they were challenging for Serie A and various cups.

I'm not saying we have to spend a fortune and risk doing a Leeds - the answer is always in the middle.

However all I want to know is this: when will we be ready to bid for Diego and company?

Villa Rules - Ashley cost us significantly more as an unproven player, and is about the same age as Hennessey. He is a useful free kick taker too. Bullard is ok, but he's ugly and has an annoying barnet. Sidwell should be a priority and might make people like SWP et al think on.

As the Barry fee goes higher and higher, I get more and more surprised. Good player. 18M? When Barcelona is asking for 15M for Deco? Sorry, Barry is no Deco. Or van der Vaart or Diego, who would probably all be available for something in that area.

I would like to see us sign Christian Poulsen.

i think that hennessey would be an great buy, even at 6m.he fits the bill, being young and british. i went to school with wayne and have followed his career closely since. hes proven to be one of the best keepers in the championship and been very consistent for wales at international level. he was at man city for a couple of years but got a raw deal there cos kasper scmeichel was there and was favoured cos his dad was also coaching there. he left for wolves where he is now no1. theres no way he'l leave wolves to be a no2 in the premiership so i reckon hennessy no1 and guzan no2. wolvws might be tempted with a 6m offer, reckon we should pull out all the stops to get him.

Milner has a goal average of about 1 in 15 games. I'm sorry but any player with license to get in the final third is simply not good enough with those stats. Also do you know how many assists he made for Newcastle last season? Look it up it might surprise a few people.

I reckon we should put a bid in for Bristol city's/Australian midfielder Nick Carle (not as a replacement for Barry) He's young, skillfull and agressive..He would become a complete player under MON..I rate him really highly!!!

As for a new keeper, would love to see Boruc at Aston Villa!!

UP THE VILLA!!!!

Liverpool will keep putting bids in. Gerrard has made it clear he wants GB at Liverpool with him and they will be sure to sign him.
I love how we are getting the correct for GB. He is worth every bit of 20mil. Even though I'm gutted to see him go, I'm glad he is doing us well and giving the club $ to spend.

Sidwell and Bullard would be fantastic signings. However, we definitely need a big name midfielder that can create, an outside back that has attacking threat, and score goals as well as a proper goal scorer(15-20 goals).
Van der Vaart!! Nelson!!! proper striker? any realistic ideas..

we know MON isnt signing the likes of diego or vandervaart, it is because he likes british talent.... this proves it in 2 full seasons he has signed 2 foreign players, salifou and carew. lets see if MON can proves us wrong by signing the likes of guzan/boruc and van der vaart/diego. but some rumours are realistic eg sidwell, bullard
c'mon MON sign some decent players
