Kenwyne Jones and Matthew Upson coming to Aston Villa while Marlon Harewood is leaving

Morning all. Not long until the game so I'm making this a quick one as I've got a lot on before kick off and while it's mostly rumours, they're quite interesting ones.
The first one is Kenwyne Jones and in the papers today it says we're going to 'splash' £5mn. on the striker from Sunderland. I'd really quite like this but I suspect a few Sunderland fans will suggest it will take more £5mn. to get Sunderland to play ball.
The other tumour is ex Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson, currently at West Ham. According to the News of the World we're in talks with West Ham and we're willing to pay £10mn. for him but West Ham want £15mn. for the, sorry about this, average, in my opinion, defender.
It's not just that I think he's average but at 29 years old, you don't pay £15mn. for any player. In fact if the prices were reversed for the two players mentioned above, I'd be more inclined to believe them; still they're both just rumours although you've got to fancy we'll be making moves in the transfer market soon.
Lastly today, the Marlon Harewood situation seems to be coming to an end if the papers are the be believed. Talk today is that he will be heading to Southampton on loan. I think the lad just wants to play football and he should be wished well if he does leave as he gave nothing but 110% for the team when he played.
Before I go, a quick question; do you want the live text service for the FA Cup match this afternoon? I only ask as it seems to be on every TV channel I can find and maybe it's not wanted today.
Right, that's it for now. I'm putting some money on Mark Hughes getting the sack.

Don't know much about K Jones, but I always thought Upson was good at corners and getting on the end of the corners, but normally hitting them wide, a bit like Double Agent Ridgewell was, great positioning but missed the target, also where would we play him? would he be happy with a squad position?
As for Mark Hughes- It may be similar to when Randy took over Villa, he waited until O'Dreary left and had MON waiting in the wings, as he would not want to give millions to the wrong manager, so yes I'm sure the owners are pretty clued up and must have a decent manager lined up also, so Hughes to go soon, 10 mill for Bridge was good business on Chelskis part I thought

Upson? Agreed Damo, £10M would be a stretch never mind £15M! Overall though, if there is any truth in this, i'm worried about what it means about Laursen.
Marlon, well done son, 10 out of 10 for effort and thanks for the goals last season. The one against Liverpoo and the curling effort from outside the box against Reading were highlights. Wish you well.

i cant see upson wanting to come to the villa after the reception we gave him and when he got injured but a good salary turns most heads,and to be fair i think he is too old to fit in mons plans and too expensive as a stop gap.
as for jones woulnt mind that at all and i think this is the first striker we have been linked with which i do agree with!!dont know why just dont fancy any of the others for one reason or the other.
Kenwyne Jones would be a great signing for the villa but really cant see it happening unless the player himself demands it . Sunderland aren't skint , so no real need to sell and if they did it would take at least double the 5m quoted .UTV

Matt Upson rumour what a waste of time printing it. Why are we going to spend 10-15 mil on him when we could use for someone like Lescott who will at least push for a first team spot in the centre and on the left. Also quite like K. Jones rumour what I have seen of him looks good, and finally one rumour that I saw pop up again was Jokanivic this is a player I like the look of alot he will give the Villa attack something different from what we have in Gabby and Carew. I think a cheeky bid for Lennon wouldn't go a miss either.

Jones would be a great signing. I'd love to see him at villa. He scores a lot of headers and with Young's delivery I could see him doing well. A good partner to Gabby as well. Def one for the future under O'Neil
We dont need Upson we've already got three quality centre backs and Knight.
But Jones would be a very good buy and a steal at 5mn.
Whats so special about jones? upson would serve the team better but wouldnt pay more than 8 for him,i'd rather have lescott.

Jonny, i think you might be right, sounds like Laursen might be out for longer than first thought and MON is lining up a ready made replacement.

Not sure either player would take Villa forward, but may be better then the alternatives we presently have in the squad. The Russian striker at spurs may be a good buy if Harry is looking to offload him and with Shorey in the other direction may be a good deal. Reports of Carew being sold would also bolster this. Comments??
I agree with HoofHearted, Upson is not the player we want. I would be very suprised if we signed another defender unless a young rightback as cover for Luke Young.
Jones would be a very good signing but Sunderland paid a lot more than £5m for him.
A winger to add competition for Ash Young and Milner must be priority together with a big, fast, goalscoring forward.
Good luck to Marlon, did you see him celebrating with Knight after the draw against Arsenal? A excellent professional if not the greatest player to wear the number 9 at Villa.

Just read on sky sports Bayern want £10Mil for Podolski. Surely Mon must think he's worth a gamble.
Youngs good but i think he'd struggle at a bigger club. Good but not the best yet in my opinion.

I think KJ would be a good signing he's quick and strong I would imagine we could get him for around 10 m although I don't think Sunderland would be too quick to sell him it would make no sense on their part as he is crucial to their team staying up.
Podolski would also be good he impressed at the Euros and I think MON would get the best out of him. But again he was mentioned all through the summer and last Jan and nothing came from it.
The talk of Upson got me thinking about Laursen too Jonny what's up with him is he out long term, that would be the only reason why I’d justify 10m for him as a short term solution, don't rate him too much but think he would do a job.

Kenwyne Jones. yes please. I've been banging on about him for ages. Someone powerful like him or Martins is just what we need. I don't agree that Upson is 'average' but you're right, at 29 years old, you'd only pay big nmoney for world class keepers I think. At the moment though, I quite like the look of that Oli playing for The Gills! Seems to be giving us a bit of a run about.

Jones would really suit our style of play - hes fast for the counter attacks, and he has a good eye for the goal from what ive seen of him. I think he would be a good signing! id say about 8million if we were to sign him, Sunderland signed him for six and he has started proving hes a great player...
I would take Matthew Upson. I wouldnt say hes "average" though Damo, hes proven that he is a quality, solid, reliable defender. I hope Shorey gets more chances to prove himself though!
I Marlon leaves, i wish him the best and a small part of me would miss him a bit. He has scored a good few quality goals for us...

Did anyone see that walcott is in the last 18 months of his contract, and hasn't opened talks with arsenal??? Would be the perfect signing frighteningly fast! can play up top or out wide providing competition for milner and young and carew and gabby! Arsenal aren't in financial trouble but have TIGHT purse strings. A bid of 15mil+ might tempt the frenchmen!! What do you think?
Mikey though i would love it, i dont think Arsenal would be letting one of their most prised possesions leave. Contract talks will probably start in a couple of months.
Villa are ahead of Arsenal in the table though, which means anything can happen. Maybe Walcott would want to leave Arsenal and move on to a top 4 club. haha!
He would be a quality signing! i think out of all the players in the premiership, he most suits our style of play! All we can do is hope!

ever thought that maybe it could be £5m for K jones + Harewood?? i feel sorry for harewood as he definitely gives his all whenever he gets his chance, but he doesn't have what we need. I really wish we could get the money together and go all out to get walcott, the gossip today says that he isn't happy and arsenal don't seem willing to re-new his contract. great result for the villa today and a quality draw! credit to gillingham for a real battling performance.
Jones would make a great signing for Villa. But I can't imagine that Sunderland would sell him---certainly not for 5 million.
We're in for Standard Liege's Milan Jovanovic, according to quotes from his friend. Apparently he is choosing between Villa and Stuttgart, who are the favorites.
Jones would be a really good squad signing - he's a decent player & with MON's guidance he coul;d really shine at Villa.
I'd love us to then get either Podolski or even Jovanovic (from what I've seen of him on youtube anyway).
I hope we don't need to buy Upson from a Lausen not being too badly injured perspective & if we do not for more than £8m max - come the end of the month WH will be desperate as they need £50m by the start of March.
KJ is class. He's very much underrated in my opinion. My only concern is that he's been out injured a bit in the past 2 years. We've been linked to a bid with Podolski before...And then it seemed impossible then, but now I really think it is a possibility.
Upson isn't even worth 5 mil.

Will take a lot more than 5m for Jones lol. I think both are rubbish.
Some of the rumours flying around could be true, although i can only see 1 or 2 being close to the mark, as someone already commmented on MON keeps his transfers very close to his chest and keeps the media guessing.
Think about it how many of our transfers from last summer where flying around for ages before they happened.
Of all of them Sidwell and Friedel were the ones that were on the money.
Milner was nothing new hes been linked ever since he enjoyed a good loan spell here so hes never not going to be linked when hes unsettled at his old club, which was all the time at newcastle.

I didnt see a single rumour flying around about these apart from maybe like 1 or 2 about shorey as soon as bouma got injured and there werent that many. So hopefully there will be a lot of surprising and exciting players coming in that we havent been linked with over and over again.

as much as i have slagged knight off i think he is doing well and i dont see the reason to pay £10 million for upson when he will be sidelined when laursen comes back
