Let's not go back to old habits

Friday, 06 July 07, 03:30 AM · Comments (15)

Listen, we all like Steven Davis. But Martin O'Neill made a decision several months ago: and that decision was that Craig Gardner is a better prospect than Steven Davis.

We accepted it during the season, so we should accept it now. Stick your hand up if you think you are a better judge of footballers than O'Neill and Robertson. My hand stays down.

We are making a big mistake in this Blog. Why? Because Nigel Reo-Coker is the replacement for Gavin McCann, not Steven Davis. How many of us would argue with the replacement of Smiler with the captain of the England U21's - a player who has won the the affirmation of Peter Taylor, Stuart Pearce and now MON. Get real.

Davis, too, will be replaced. We don't know by whom yet, but - for argument's sake - let's say it were Wesley Sneijder. Would we still be bitching then?

Martin O'Neill knows what he is doing. For every player cleared out - and this is exactly why it is so exciting - there is an agreement in place with a better player. Sure, it's frustrating - but these things take time.

I remain rock solid certain that Steven Davis has only been released because a world-class midfielder is going to fill his boots.

But then, the cynics and knockers will always be the cynics and knockers. They don't have the intellectual hardware to understand that.

Doc, if it was just one or two people slightly unhappy about Davis going sure, but there is a lot. While most of those will also stand by the decision at the moment we've seen (looks to top right) 8 players leave and only 1 come in.

While I also hope that there will be all these signings some have a right to be a little, shall we say, anxious.

O'Neill was quoted at the end of last season saying he wants a bigger squad. He was also quoted as saying that he wanted his players in for pre-season.

Well, pre-season has started and we need seven more players. Everyone, I think, believes in O'Neill, but we can still get a little anxious, can't we?

Although, I suspect we'll still have that press conference to unveil a few players and they'll probably all be internationals so we've got two weeks yet as Martin O'Neill has granted the internationals an extra two weeks off. ;)

quite right, no one compalained that davis wasnt in the team because gardener was performing admirably. Davis or lets say Sneijder, same age massive gulf in talent. we have cleared out the dead wood of o'learys squad. yes pre season has started but i thnk that MON wants his squad done before we go to America which is not for a while. Reo-coker may have played badly last season but there are critics of Gerrards and Lampards performances last season. Only time will tell, yes be anxious but have faith and leave the work to the people who know how.

At the end of the day no gripes with Davies but his heart was not at Villa, if it was he would of stayed and fought for his place. Davies should of at least give us one more season, he owed us that. On another note Fowler is in talks with Villa. Apparently the wages are not the problem it is how often he will play.

Wesley Sneijder along with SWP, Defoe and Bellemy will not be coming to Villa. Get real, this is real life not FM2007.

I like Davis as a player and a person and would love for him to have stayed in the Villa squad and fought to show the manager he deserved a starting place.
The fact is the player wants regular first team football and MON could not guarantee him that in his pursuit of quality.
Steven Davis chose to leave the club in order to play regular football rather than stay and fight for his place.
Nothing sinister, nothing underhanded, nobody to blame, it's just football and I wish Steven all the best in his career.

Most likely will be Koumas instead of Sneijder. Sneijder wants Champions League and Spanish football, both of which we cannot offer, and we will never offer Spanish football!! MON is simply clearing out the rubbish or the unambitious at the moment, Davis was a good player but refused to play where he was asked (left-attacking winger) and Martin decided to get rid of him, Smiler was past it and would only be playing against the top 6 teams for defensive tactics and 1 of the 8 up in that 'out' box was a reserve keeper, and they aren't exactly important.

Glad you put some sense into all of this Doc! On a another note - has anybody seen the quote from Bruce "villa have spent blues entire budget on one player" and this makes him "green with envy" and they are in a "different market".... At least their manager realises the gulf between the two clubs.

I just hope i don't have to buy a Villa shirt and have to put Reo-Joker on the back in 6 months, but i'm not convinced he's the class we need, we have Barry for that, i'm dreaming (and may be for the rest of his playing days) that we sign Sneijder, i wouldn't care if we didn't sign anyone else.

Well put DOC, If you moaners and sceptics don't trust MON then you perhaps need to get yourself another club to follow!!! Try the Blues they make loads of closed season signings!
Its quality now, gone are the days of smiler, hendrie, samuel etc, we need to be in for the quality youth market and in Reo Coker, Ashley Young and SWP (when he arrives) we are going to have the foundations in place to challenge for the long term and not just grab a UEFA birth next season and fall flat on our arses!
Randy is putting down foundations and whilst West Ham, Man City etc are in for the quick fix without building for the future, they could all be looking at Leeds Utd as a business model!!
Stand by and firm all Claret and Blue, we are nearly ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with the top 4 and challenge consistently (not just for the odd season)...Ask yourselves, What would you want?

Hi guys. I just read on football365 that has said the trip to America will be a great chance fo NRC and the rest to bond and mix together. I dont know about everyone but I'd be thinking all will be revealed before the trip Im anticapating a replacement for all that left everyone has to remember that most of who left were fringe players and Sutton was forced to retire..... Its gonna be good from now on from Randy down we should have faith in everyone
