Match Prediction: Away at Chelsea

Friday, 03 October 08, 10:31 AM · Comments (51)

Chelsea haven't lost at home in something like 85 matches and while I'm not going to be putting my mortgage on it, I am going to have a cheeky fiver that we do it this weekend, mostly because we've come so close the last two seasons under Martin O'Neill.

Sure, they have a new manager but it just feels like we're getting closer against Chelsea and this will be the third manager Martin O'Neill has faced at Chelsea so I think it's more about how to play against Chelsea as a team, rather than the man in charge.

I'll even go so far as to say we were the unlucky team not to win at Stamford Bridge last season and had it not been for another poor referring display we probably would have won. Chelsea were lucky and if a Chelsea fan disagrees with that then he clearly didn't see the game.

But it's not about the past, it's about Sunday and this is our seventh match in three week so you can understand why certain players were rested yesterday and why they will be expected to make a return for this match and show that the rest worked.

Laursen, Barry, Reo-Coker, Gabby and Carew will probably all return and as long as we go into this match as we have done most other matches this season, we have a chance. We have a chance because there is a level of belief at the moment that every match can be won.

So, to my prediction; the last time we were in London we beat Spurs and that was the first time we won a match in London for something like four years and while I'm putting a fiver on us winning I've got to follow my heart when I publish my prediction, so I'm going to say a draw.

In case you were interested; you'll get 13/2 on Villa at the moment, so my fiver could win me over £30 - not a bad return for a match of eleven versus eleven.

I think this will be very close. A 0-0 draw most likely and because chelsea are missing a few players they should be happy with a point. It will be tense and I hope it is not decided by the referee making a home decision. Its great that we are playing in the biggest fixture this weekend. It shows the progress we have made.

I've genuinely got a good feeling about the match on Sunday, i really think we can do it...

Does anybody how bad Chelsea's injury problems are? I know Drogba, Deco and Carvalho are defo out, but if there are more thats a bit of a bonus...

I agree, Villa to win this one 2-1 as Hull did to Arsenal.
One worry, last night Ash Young took a lot of heavy tackles and persistant knocks, he looked tired and should have come off earlier.
However, I trust he will score on Sunday from one of his free kicks.

You get one chance a year to end this run, I don't think another chance will come for Villa, I would love us to be the team to win at SB. With MON having everyone believing it can happen, I don't see why not...

The news is Essien, J Cole, Carvalho, Drogba and Deco are all defo out.

Also there are doubts over A Cole, Terry and Alex although I would expect all three to start.

Although they have injuries a starting line-up of

Cech, Bosingwa, Terry, Alex, A Cole, Mikel, Lampard, Ballack, Malouda, Kalou and Anelka is hardly poor.

Keeping the full backs quiet and stopping Lampard shooting from distance are going to be key.

However despite my start and their missing players my heart still believs we may lose 2-1 with Anelka and Fat Frank netting.

The key is going to be getting Gabby in behind as neither of their centre backs are that quick.

Craig, It will be important, as will Carew's flick ons, they have to be accurate everytime, get Gabby behind their defence and we're away!!!

I hope if we do take the lead, i hope we won't try and sit on it for too long, if you invite Chelsea to attack then they'll score...

The defence has to be really physical with their midfield and forwards, Not allow Kalou or Malouda too much time!!!

And Ballack has to be watched very very carefully on set-plays (Martin Laursens job i'd imagine)

I think that too, If you look at VillaCraigs post earlier he makes a good point that A.Young and Gabby could be the difference, all it takes is a good ball behind their defence to Gabby (hopefully staying onside) and Alex and Terry are on their arses...

In football all good runs have to come to a end sometime?

We playing chelski away we all said the same about when we were playing manure (hype) last season' and look how that ended

Every club dreams about beating them at stamford but it rarely happens and i again wont be waisting my cash by betting on a villa win? Even the top 3 struggle there expect them to score because we cant keep a clean sheet for a bung? And you actually think i'm going for a away win :? come on

But.....

This is HISTORY we haven't played this good for 9 years, round it off ''a decade ago..since we got good results? I'm wishing we could beat these clowns, if hull can beat Gonners at home with a full strenth squad going all out? Then we beat beat the foreign legion at there home. I hope we win but can't see it happenin..

3-1 to the filth 'sorry guys 8)

If A. Cole, Terry and Alex play they wont be near 100% fit. Big John to soften them up a bit and Gabby to run them ragged. Come on Villa!

It is my opinion that this is the biggest league match for the Villa since the Ron Atkinson days in the early 90s. And I think the Villa will jump out to a 2-0 lead and hang on for a 2-1 win. And then we can start dreaming of more than fourth.

I think it's out best chance to win there for a long time, they have some key players missing. We should have won there last season if it wasn't for a dodgy pen and free kick.

I'd love to say 2.1 Villa, but I have a feeling that if it was that score towards the end, the ref would come to Chelski's rescue

I think Villa will win against chelsea. Villa won 2-0 last time and they performed very well that match. Apparently Chelsea has a big injury list including carvalleo, joe cole, j. Terry etc. If the villians do win they will go top of table unless liverpool win against man city.
