Match Prediction: Blackburn at Ewood Park

Tuesday, 27 November 07, 08:36 AM · Comments (17)

Martin O'Neill, sort of committing his long term future to Aston Villa, is for me a turning point in the fortunes of our club.

If he is still the manager in 18 months then it will be when he picked Villa over England that turned it for me.

It will be the turning point because we would have just beaten Middlesbrough, Blackburn and Arsenal and in his second season as manager, obtained UEFA cup football.

All this before kicking on to Champions League and the Premier League title within ten seasons before handing over the managerial reigns to Gareth Barry.

Of course, we could lose tomorrow night and I could admit I have a drink problem, but I think every game offers us something other than just a result and us beating Blackburn tomorrow all adds up for me.

It would be the fourth straight win for Martin O'Neill and the fourth straight match without a win for Mark Hughes. I then have this gut feeling that Newcastle will get beaten by Blackburn at the weekend and we'll see fat Sam sacked.

We're going into this game, on paper as the team that should win and we beat them twice last season so Martin O'Neill knows how to do it with Aston Villa.

My prediction is an away win, sixth spot for us and the beginning of the turning point.

There will come a time when it just starts to happen and none of us may even admit to it happening in case, as so very often with Aston Villa, it was a false dawn.

But it could be now - after tomorrow night there are only six more games until the transfer window opens and I for one think that if we can go into January with 11 more points we've got every chance of European football next season.

The question you have to ask yourself is can we get 11 points from Blackburn, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Manchester City, Chelsea and Wigan?

I don't see why not: wins against Blackburn, Sunderland and Wigan with draws against Portsmouth and Man City. But you're right, tomorrow's game is going to be a great test of where our team belongs to be. I just hope Carson has his confidence back.

11 points from those games?? Hmm, tricky one.

Blackburn away - Draw - 1 point
Arsenal home - Lose - 0 points
Portsmouth home - Win (barely) - 3 points
Sunderland away - Win - 3 points
Man City home - Win - 3 points
Chelsea away - Lose - 0 points
Wigan away - Win - 3 points

Thats 13 points, and I guess i'm being a bit optimistic with some of those games. Pompeii at home will be hard, they play well away from home, but I don't think they've come up with a team strong defence in a long time, and I think are fast players will make mincemeat out of their defence.

Blackburn away will be difficult, although they haven't won for three games. They'll have all their strikers back and i'm not sure how Laursen and Knight will deal with Santa-Cruz and McCarthy.

Sunderland can't defend to save their lives right now, and City aren't looking as good as they did early on in the season and even we gave them a run for their money at the City Stadium, and now we can finish our shots.

What a crazy rant talking crap as if Villa are some kind of special team what have they done the last few years to even have a foundation that will lead to Uefa cup football let alone Champions Lg football . Villa will be beaten tommorrow night 2-0 .

wazzo, do you think your team are special? of course you do. we've just got a new owner and have martin o'neill who is slowly building a team, that as supporters, we'd like to think had a chance of achieving something in the future ... it has to start somewhere ..

Only if you believe your team is special, and expect the success that confirms it, do you achieve anything.

MON's taken his own approach, one that the fans can embrace and be proud of. There's a real identity to this team, and each week we're getting to see exciting young players given their head and a chance to develop. With all that, Villa are still sitting in the top 10. Despite pe ople's fears in the off season, Villa have done well so far, and are showing that MON knows what he's doing. There have been a couple of meltdowns, but that's to be expected with so much youth on the pitch. They're starting to come together nicely.

11 points should be entirely possible. I, for one, would like to see Villa come to at least expect, and get, draws against the top 4 at home.

"Well on paper we are the team that should win" is that based on just form though?

Blackburn have a very good squad which is at least on par with ours and i think maybe a little better (this will change in January) they will be wanting to win since they havent in a while. They are playing at home.

Im going for a draw at best, just got a feeling. Even if we do lose though we only fall to 8th!

blackburn don't deserve to be in the premiership..let alone urope. They are a dirty, vile team and have no fans...they basically bought the premier league and they latch on to the hope they may even be considered as a 'big' team. villa will turn them over....walsall would have more fans if they were in the premier eague..no they probably have more fans now..burnley are a bigger club...utv!

To do this table thing, i'm going to do it as i see it from this horizon right now, and as realistically as i can be from a subjective Villa point of view:

Blackburn-Draw=1 point
Arsenal-Lose-0 Points
Portsmouth-Win=1 Point
Sunderland-Win=3 points
Man City-Win=1 points
Chelsea-Draw=0 points
Wigan-Win=3 Points

Now that seems pessimistic, but i think it's realistic looking at it right now. That being said, it's quite possible for the draws against city, blackburn and pompey to turn into wins, the losses against arse and chelsea to turn to draws, but equally for the rubber stamped wins to turn to defeats. It's difficult to say with us, but i see us getting anywhere between 9-14 points out of those. The next 7 games will shape our season pretty heavily though Damian, i agree.

I think Blackburn are a good team and will it be a hard test. A draw would be acceptable but we should be going for 3 points.
