Match Prediction: Blackburn at Villa Park

Friday, 25 January 08, 02:55 AM · Comments (32)

Just because we beat them 4-0 last time out, in their back garden, it doesn't mean it will be as easy this time - although I'll get straight to the point - this really should be a home win.

Blackburn are doing quite well and mathematically they could go ahead of us and into 5th place if they beat us on Saturday, so it's not going to be that easy.

They're actually doing better away from Ewood Park than they are at home so this game could actually be a little tougher than we all expect - but the rewards are too great for us to go into this game half cocked.

If we win, we'll be in 4th place, a point and place above Everton and a whole three points above Liverpool and you'd hope that we'll be getting in a few players next week to kick on from this position.

We'll know more later today about who is fit and who isn't fit but this could very well be the last time Olof Mellberg plays at Villa Park. Now is the time to let him know he'll be missed if he does decide to leave or it's the time to give him something to think about.

My prediction is a win. It's a win because this would move us on a little and is the ideal time to create a bit of breathing space - I'll even be having a bet on it later.

Tough game. 1-1. I went to Ewood and great though it was, 4-0 flattered us. They'll be out for revenge.

Last time I was a Ewood Tommy Johnson and Dwight netted right in front of me. 2-0 again, Ash and Reo to bag. Both in the 2nd half. 48th and 67th mins consecutively. Any takers?

Arrlui if you put some money on that and it comes off you could be very very rich by 5pm tomorrow!! ;D

We have what it takes to beat them but it will not be easy. 4-0 definitely flattered us last time and we just need to make sure we do the job. If we can get a point at Anfield and Stamford Bridge we can definitely get 3 at home to Blackburn.

i for one am delighted this game got moved to a saturday, im thinking 1-0 villa at half time 2-1 villa at the end, not sure what id rather have this weekend, a good result or some new signings
and talking of punts for this weekend, skysports news were reporting the bookies have havant and waterlooville at 60-1 to be winning at any point tomorrow, might be worth putting some shrapnal on

2-1 Villa, Laursen and Gabby, Bentley for them - we have to take that 4th spot tomorrow, I am scouring the web every day waiting for those new bodies (sigh). If you are all like me and obsessed with it check out the best news site on the web - LINK - type "villa" in the search box and be prepared to waste half your scouring the articles it gives you, very addictive.

UTV!

Sang to the tune of Noah Arc Song...

A saviour came from lands afar, Oneil, Oneil.
He made his way to Villa park, Oneil, Oneil.
With Martin Laurson, John Carew
He built a side in claret and blue
And we all laff as the blues go down again.

Lets get it echoing round the Holte End tomorrow...

The Arc chant is classic......I'm all up for more inventive songs, they seemed to have died a death over recent years.

A few comments......

1. As we can all see by the lack of genuine transfer news from any club, the January transfer window is a nightmare full stop -I think we need to be thankful if we get anyone in at all. There is absolutely no point in panic buying.
2. Olof Mellberg is a legend - FACT
3. A fourth placed finish and the associated champions league place, whilst this would be wonderful in theory, in practice it might hurt us next season - when, by the looks of things we'll be down to 15 players in the squad.
4. Craig Gardener is average

I agree with 3 out of 4 points ... apart from number 3)

Yeah we will be down to 15 players, but it will be the summer then?
Which means the transfer window for new players to come in and they will be of a higher quality, surely?!!?

Dazzler
Dazzler Wrote: | 20.58GMT | Jan 25, 2008

agreed - they will be of higher quality - I just can't see us getting the numbers (and quality) in to maintain our improvment in the league next season as well as battle in Champs League. Despite being desperate to hear that champs league ITV music and the announcement of Aston Villa vs Barcelona....I can't help but feel a simple Aston Villa vs Sevilla (Uefa Cup) - will serve us better in the long run

its champions league qualifying that id be worried about, as amazing as it would be to get into 4th place theres still a real danger we could do what everton did a few years back and crash out embarassingly early, if anything a good uefa cup campaign could be more beneficial than a rubbish CL one

Reece
Reece Wrote: | 22.17GMT | Jan 25, 2008

Even if we did qualify for CL, which is not likely then even if we did have a bad run and crashed early we automatically go into the UEFA cup!

think we mite just shade it 2--1...
bet some of the lads are a bit tired,,shame we dont have any replacements..also a shame that mon dont think we can break into the top four this year...seems to me that this season is the time to do it..with only three of the so called top four up for it..bet everton,,man city and blackburn are eyeing that forth place up,,just wish we were..never mind mon dont wanna rush things,,,god imagine what we he do if we did get in there,,he would have to spend money in the summer,,never mind ,,well done the lads a great season so far, better than expected by miles..just hope we dont all have to be saying if only..in the summer...hate to miss out on europe just because of a bit of penny pinching...

Blackburn on Saturday: I will put my modest winnnings from our draw against Liverpool on Mellberg to score at any time, if he's playing. I reckon the lads will try desperately to set him up. It's a tough game which we should win by a narrow margin, 2-1.

CL or UEFA? We must always aim as high as we can, but obviously try to avoid going out too early to drop into UEFA. Just by getting 4th we would not expect to attract CL quality players, it's only when we become established at that level for a few years that we would be attractive. Don't foorget though that our existing youngsters will be a year older by then, we can only assume that they would grow into their roles. The future is bright, it's claret and blue.

2-0 to the villa...with no depth in the squad, God help us if we do manage the Champions League...Time to strengthen NOW. if we want to move forward.

Dazzler
Dazzler Wrote: | 23.05GMT | Jan 25, 2008

some of you have missed the point - particularly mr Somerset (as always)- the point wasn't about whether we get knocked out in the first round of CL - it was regarding whether it might have a detrimental effect on our league position next year - due to the limitations of the small squad we have

PaulE
PaulE Wrote: | 23.22GMT | Jan 25, 2008

If it goes to form, we'll have a bit of a rough opening and concede a goal in the first 25 mins. We'll start to get back into it before half time.

After the break, we'll claw one back through a set piece and nick another a bit later on. Blackburn will give us a tough end to the game, but we'll either hang on for 2-1 or grab another on the break.

Things would be so much easier if we stopped giving teams a one goal head start!

Isn't it a relief that nowadays we can look forward to going in at half time knowing that the team will come out better organised thanks to MON's tactical awareness?

I now feel if we can get to half time at 0-0 or even 1 down against the better sides that we will still get a result.

I agree with PaulE though, it would be better if we started the games more convincingly, but hey, maybe next season in the Champions League we'll stop giving teams a chance.

2-1 Villa.

A dicussion topic.

Would we be happier supporting a top four club or is these the best times when the promised land is within reach?

Arrlui
Arrlui Wrote: | 15.55GMT | Jan 26, 2008

We won't have bought CL football like the Chelskis if we do make it. I'll be happy with an intertoto spot if it gets us into Europe again. Last memory I have is a Collymore hattrick against Helsingborgs (?) and a 1/4 away goals loss against Atletico. I think it's time an English team lifted the UEFA again, and it's gonna be the Villa next season. If we can get results against Chelsea and Liverpool we can statistically get to the CL semis. Bit of faith and a few signings and we'll be seeing games abroad next season. I hope we play a dutch side so I can go see a game without buying flights. UTV! (sign Falcao!)
