Match Prediction: Bolton Wanderers

Thursday, 08 December 05, 08:53 AM · Comments (0)

This match brings back happy memories of the first day of the season. Every year it's the same as an Aston Villa fan; huge hope and expectation only to be dashed a few weeks in.

This season or the opening day match against Bolton were no different - all over in a few minutes.

Everyone will remember the result, 2-2 with goals from Kevin Phillips and Steven Davis but they also got two and we finished all square.

I predicted we'd win the match 2-0 and I got it wrong so this week I'm doing a Redknapp and predicting and betting with my head.

Bolton have had a good start to the season. They are currently sitting in 6th place on 26 points and a win on Saturday could potentially move them into 3rd so they have everything to play for. A win for Aston Villa could move us up to 10th but we could also slip to 17th if results went against us - tough one to call.

One thing David O'Leary has in his locker is current league form. Seven points from 9, something we haven't heard enough about this week despite predicting we would is actually good. It's only when you look at the opposition and their recent form that you understand how Aston Villa have got lucky.

Bolton have won five at home this season and only drawn and lost once. They've scored eight goals and only conceded once. Villa score on average a goal every away match but with Bolton only letting one in on average as many times as Aston Villa have played away from home this season I'm not putting money on an Aston Villa player as first scorer.

We've beaten Bolton 57 times, lost 55 times and drawn 35 (very familiar to the Aston Villa record under David O'Leary). In the corresponding fixture last season we beat them 2-1 but I'm afraid when it comes down to predictions I don't see an Aston Villa win this weekend.

I'm going to go for a draw and more blarney from O'Leary about 8 points from 12, how we didn't get knocked out of the Champions League in the week and hopefully some 'big style'.
